To think that the Welsh national anthem is one of the best in the world?

Not that im biased or anything...

But I really do think we have one of the best anthem's in the world, and its genuinely on a par with Stars and Stripes, Russia, France and Germany etc. Its rousing, sends tingles down your spine and am even though im not a massively patriotic it instills a real sense of pride in me. Which is what an anthem SHOULD do.

The dirge God Save the Queen isnt even comparible IMO. When the Queen goes the UK (if it still exists lol) really need to get a better anthem!

I'm always surprised at the number of people in Wales who don't know the words to Welsh National Anthem.

tillytrotter1 · 27/10/2019 13:30

I usually switch on at the start of a Wales match just to hear the crowd sing, so sorry that there wouldn't be an England v Wales final. What would have been played at the start of a final, The Queen is the anthem for the UK, not just England, Jerusalem may be a better choice. Flower of Scotland is probably the only memorable thing that the Corries ever wrote, it was only written in the 60s. not some venerable old tune.

ageingdisgracefully · 27/10/2019 13:40

Isn't there something subversive about the words to Jerusalem that makes it unsuitable as an anthem? Something about satanic mills maybe?

Liverpool52 · 27/10/2019 14:01

Nope. Much prefer O Flower of Scotland.

We were never taught the words in school. Just expected to know it.

noodlenosefraggle · 27/10/2019 14:12

I agree. I like the New Zealand one that's dual language. I don't know why GSTQ is sung at all. It's awful and, as others have said, isn't the English National Anthem. Having one for England will mean we don't have to hear the bloody thing so often.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/10/2019 14:18

I like the Irish national anthem too. I think it’s my favourite.

I don’t think God Sane The Queen is the worst but it doesn’t get the blood pumping!

KatherineJaneway · 27/10/2019 14:19

It's not the anthem, it's the voices singing that brings the magic. Nothing quite like a Welsh voice.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/10/2019 14:21

I am biased as I am Welsh and have a connection with the James family that wrote it - so I think it’s great.

The problem with GSTQ (apart from the tune) is that it isn’t really about the country and it’s people. Good anthems are something that the population can get behind, it’s about them and their country.

chomalungma · 27/10/2019 14:35

It's not bad....but there are better

rainingallday · 27/10/2019 14:40

@ManonBlackbeak Nah, the 'British' one is better.

I can only imagine the responses if England had their own, and someone posted to say they prefer the ENGLISH one! Wink

'Hmph, nationalistic much OP?!' THAT's what we'd hear. Hmm

Sorry Wales lost by the way.

StripyHorse · 27/10/2019 14:58

You are totally correct OP.

And we have the best flag. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

beanaseireann · 27/10/2019 15:20

I love the Welsh anthem, the French anthem and Flower of Scotland.
I 'm Irish

choirmumoftwo · 27/10/2019 15:26

Two fabulous anthems this morning. South African one always makes me quite emotional.

Sn0tnose · 27/10/2019 15:33

We are taught our anthem in school from a very young age. So we all know the words, even when we are not fluent Welsh speakers Not in my DH’s part of Wales they weren’t. He knows the odd word here and there, but couldn’t sing the whole thing. Welsh language assemblies were very rare in his school.

I agree with you though, it is a beautiful anthem. I think it’s made better by the sheer gusto it’s sung with. I’m sorry you lost today, I was hoping for an England v Wales game.

runninguphills · 27/10/2019 15:44

Has anyone heard the national anthem from Brittany, France. I'm not sure if it's linked back to pre English Channel days (Welsh, Cornish and Bretton languages are also very similar)

runninguphills · 27/10/2019 15:46

Also, here is the Cornish regional anthem
....

Littlemeadow123 · 27/10/2019 15:51

I like Jerusalem - which England occasionally gets to have as its national anthem when it is not competing as part of the UK. I wish they would turn it into Englan'd anthem officially. Its not fair that Wales/Scotland/Ireland get to have their own and England is stuck with God save the Queen

Petrichor11 · 27/10/2019 15:51

The welsh anthem is definitely the best! As is the flag. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

cwg1 · 27/10/2019 15:54

I love it and Nkosi Sikelele from South Africa. I know Edelweiss isn't really the Austrian national anthem but love that, too.

freddy45 · 27/10/2019 16:39

I adore it and bread of heaven. My dad was a valleys boy and bread of heaven was sung at his, my brothers and my grandpas funeral. The singing at my grandpas funeral in a jam packed Methodist chapel was the most spine tingling I've ever heard.

I love the Italian, Canadian and Scottish anthems. I always feel a little disappointed by the Irish one which is sad as I am part Irish

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/10/2019 16:51

I do love the Russian anthem too. It sounds so Russian that you know it could only be their anthem. Putin got that right.

Babynut1 · 27/10/2019 16:55

Absolutely 100% the best!!

ConFusion360 · 27/10/2019 17:02

I'm not sure if it's linked back to pre English Channel days

Flippin' 'eck, that's going back a bit!

Stickybeaksid · 27/10/2019 17:28

I was only saying that to my dh this morning when we were watching the match. Sorry you lost we are Irish and we were hoping to cheer for Wales in the final. 🇮🇪😉

JadeDragon23 · 27/10/2019 17:48

Yanbu op...best anthem ever.

No feeling like it being in a pub and hearing it belted out all around you! Smile
