To think that the Welsh national anthem is one of the best in the world?

Not that im biased or anything...

But I really do think we have one of the best anthem's in the world, and its genuinely on a par with Stars and Stripes, Russia, France and Germany etc. Its rousing, sends tingles down your spine and am even though im not a massively patriotic it instills a real sense of pride in me. Which is what an anthem SHOULD do.

The dirge God Save the Queen isnt even comparible IMO. When the Queen goes the UK (if it still exists lol) really need to get a better anthem!

It’s a great anthem. We weren’t taught it in school though (very Welsh area of Wales, Welsh medium schools) which is a shame. I don’t think my dc have learnt it in school either.

ManonBlackbeak · 27/10/2019 10:04

Does your children's school not have an Eisteddfod on St David's day Prosecoinamug? The anthem is always sung at that.

I am Welsh, it is so rousing and full of passion, always sends tingles down my spine and feelings of hiraeth - longing for home.
Come on Wales and we certainly won the sing off.

Because Gaelic hasn't been the main language of Scotland since mediaeval times, other than in the Highlands, where it lasted a bit longer. In the lowlands, it was starting to be replaced by Scots around the 1400s. After the Jacobite rising and Culloden in the 1700s, it began to die out even more rapidly in the north because of more English outposts and input into Scottish culture.

It's not very commonly spoken now either. I've lived in Scotland for the whole of my 34 years and have met very few people who speak Gaelic, sadly.

Scots is spoken much more widely to varying degrees still and in different dialects though.

agree about wales Dragon but also love La Marseillaise because it's so ridiculously violent with the "ferocious soldiers coming to slit the throat of your son' but don't worry 'their impure blood will water our fields.' Grin nice and rousing!

overnightangel · 27/10/2019 10:16

I suppose they have to have something positive to make up for being lumbered with that awful accent 😏

Blobby10 · 27/10/2019 10:16

I like watching any rugby team singing their national anthem!! The English team really belted out God Save The Queen yesterday and it was lovely to hear. Provided its kept moving fairly swiftly I think its as uplifting as anything else

Jerusalem is an awful dirge that should be left to the WI and funerals and Land of Hope and Glory is too difficult to sing as you only need it to be transposed slightly differently and anyone who isn't a trained singer will really struggle

Paintedmaypole · 27/10/2019 10:18

Great anthem, probably the best. Don't like the suggestion of "Land of Hope and Glory" for England (Wider still and wider, shall thy bounds be set!) but agree that God Save the Queen is a dirge. IMO though, flag waving and national anthems should be confined completely to sporting events.

doleritedinosaur · 27/10/2019 10:19

YANBU!

It’s the best, whenever I’m homesick & watch a rugby match it just fills me with joy.

Grasspigeons · 27/10/2019 10:24

Its a great anthem. The english need an anthem instead of the uk one which is rubbish. Its worse that ribbish - im not religious and dont like the monarchy and has a verse that is anti scottish which is offensive. I always liked the words of the french one too - its so violent. I like the tine of the German one.

Splodgetastic · 27/10/2019 10:27

The German national anthem is also a dirge, although the sentiment of unity, law and freedom is nice.

Kazziek · 27/10/2019 10:29

I'm half English, half Welsh. The Welsh anthem is utterly glorious. I also like God save the Queen, but have always considered that a GB rather than English anthem, and nowhere near as good!

HabbyHadno · 27/10/2019 10:30

I love the Welsh anthem It makes me a bit emosh and I'm not even Welsh. The England one needs changing, it doesn't say much about our country apart from having a Queen.

BestIsWest · 27/10/2019 10:31

I like the South African one. But of course the Welsh one is best.

MaidenMotherCrone · 27/10/2019 10:35

I wasn't taught it at school neither were my children. We did make our own words up to it. Still sing these now.

My hen caught a haddock and had it forrrrr teaaaaa.

And other such nonsense Grin

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 27/10/2019 10:38

My flat mate as a student taught me the Canadian one and I like that...!

Flower Of Scotland is my favourite though (I am Scottish though )

BestIsWest · 27/10/2019 10:40

Oh Canada! My DC claim Canadian ancestry way back and love to sing the Canadian one.

There a great phonetic version of the Welsh one by the poet Nigel Jenkins.

RuggerHug · 27/10/2019 10:41

Irish one will always be the bestWink Wales is up there though, along with the South African one.

NeedAnExpert · 27/10/2019 10:42

It’s THE best.

Cymru am Byth.

DD has been belting out the anthem since learning it at nursery aged 3.

geordiejock · 27/10/2019 10:52

Well, we won't be hearing it in the final.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 27/10/2019 10:58

Its the best! But i wish to god they'd just let us sing it without a band or a celeb on the pitch. We do a decent show with it being ruined by being out if sync.

Roussette · 27/10/2019 11:06

I agree the English anthem is dire , however I like the Italian one

Totally agree. The welsh one isn't a patch on the Italy national anthem AFAIC, the lead up to it is fantastic and the shout at the end is inspiring, like a vocal version of the haka.

And DH and I attempt to sing along with it, how sad is that

HolyMerlot · 27/10/2019 11:12

Welsh Anthem is definitely the best 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and I agree with @Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany in terms of letting the team and the crowd sing it without the help of a singer on the pitch who always seem to sing the anthem too fast Hmm

2nd best anthem for me will always be Ireland's 🇨🇮 our brothers from another mother 🤜🏼🤛🏼

Nos123 · 27/10/2019 11:22

The lyrics of the Welsh anthem are quite powerful. Similar to the flower of Scotland but with a better tune (in my opinion).

Feenie · 27/10/2019 11:29

Of course it's the best.

God Save the Queen is a dirge - and it isn't even England's national anthem, so god knows why it's sung at all.
