To think that the Welsh national anthem is one of the best in the world?

Not that im biased or anything...

But I really do think we have one of the best anthem's in the world, and its genuinely on a par with Stars and Stripes, Russia, France and Germany etc. Its rousing, sends tingles down your spine and am even though im not a massively patriotic it instills a real sense of pride in me. Which is what an anthem SHOULD do.

The dirge God Save the Queen isnt even comparible IMO. When the Queen goes the UK (if it still exists lol) really need to get a better anthem!

YANBU. it's beautiful. My Nana was Welsh and i have find memories of hearing her sign it. it was played at her funeral. very moving.

I think it is more to do with the way it is sung and that the welsh seem to have a large amount of people who can sing beautifully.

Personally I prefer the the Irish one.

We are taught our anthem in school from a very young age. So we all know the words, even when we are not fluent Welsh speakers.

I like Flower of Scotland as well. I think the other home nations have much better anthems than the UK/England, England could have something like Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem which are really rousing and passionate and yet stick with the GSTQ dirge. Why is that?

I love flower of Scotland and land of my fathers. They are amazing anthems that are just so poetic and lyrical - knock socks off god save the queen. Pp right - Jerusalem and land of hope and glory much more rousing!

Flower of Scotland sung in a big stadium is quite something. GSTQ is a bloody awful dirge.

Prefer it when the Irish sing shoulder to shoulder - you can’t beat that one! I also like Flower of Scotland.

Totally agree. And I like Flower of Scotland too. I’m English and wish we had a more rousing anthem, especially at sporting events. Personally given the Queen is monarch of a few different countries, I think GSTQ should not be used just for England. I seem to remember on here someone suggesting the song “right said Fred, we’ll have a cup of tea” but Land of Hope would do it for me.

Yes the Russian anthem is probably my favourite international anthem. Probably because it always reminds me of Ivan Drago in Rocky 4 , when the communism collapsed in Russia they briefly changed it, then Putin brought it back but with updated lyrics. One of the few good things he's done I'd say!

A bit off-piste but any idea why the Scots don't have an anthem sung in Gaelic?
