To ask you to recommend a West End play to me?

I'm in London for a few days next month and will have enough time to see 2 West End plays - hurrah!

Last time I asked on MN a few months ago someone recommended Come From Away - which was amazing and I'm so happy I took the recommendation.

Sadly Les Mis isn't on again until December and I'd love to have seen Six but it's sold out on the dates I'm going Sad have seen Matilda and Wicked. It doesn't have to be a musical but please recommend any amazing West End plays you've seen.

TIA

Agree that The Son is brilliant, but very emotionally harrowing. Laurie Kynaston, who plays the son, is terrific.

Icequeen01 · 27/10/2019 21:48

We saw The Waitress last night and both DH and I really didn’t like it - and we both normally like a musical! Everyone around us seemed to love it and DH and I wondered if we were in some parallel universe 😀

I’ve seen the Play that Went Wrong and loved it. Incredibly funny.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/10/2019 21:50

Hamilton is fantastic. The Play That Goes Wrong, the Play About The Bank Robbery, Groan Ups (all three by the Mischief Theatre Company) are marvellous.

Fightthebear · 27/10/2019 21:52

Death of a Salesman- just about to open for a limited run.

It’s transferring from the Young Vic and is absolutely fantastic.

Gazelda · 27/10/2019 21:54

Great choices OP. The play that goes wrong is possibly the best play I've ever seen. Enjoy,

Fightthebear · 27/10/2019 21:54

Just seen you’ve booked!

LazyLizzy · 27/10/2019 21:58

Witness for the Prosecution - really gripping and amazing venue!

Another here for Witness. The 'stage' was brilliant. Loved it.

AlbertWinestein · 28/10/2019 11:00

Kitty Be More Chill is out and out the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. Unless you’re a 15 year old cos player, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

gingergiraffe · 28/10/2019 21:06

Bucking the trend here but I actually hated the play that goes wrong. I didn’t find it at all funny but then, I don’t like slap stick. Also hated Nine to Five. Not sure if it is still on but I loved the 39 Steps.

@Wearywithteens

I had the soundtrack memorised before i went in, and i think a lot of fans came to it that way.

I'd also had time to look at the history, so it resonated a lot more for me

Oh my word, there's nothing repetitive and samey about Hamilton! Fair enough it's not to everyone's taste but it's a work of art regardless. There are (incredibly clever) recurring musical motifs but otherwise nearly every song is a different style, and such a clever blend of hip hop and pure musical theatre.

Notname · 28/10/2019 21:57

I adored Hamilton, by far the best thing I’ve ever seen. Also really enjoyed Matilda, Les Mis, the Lion King and Blood Brothers over the years. But Hamilton is in a different league.

I didn’t really enjoy the play that went wrong, I didn’t find it that funny.

VanyaHargreeves · 28/10/2019 21:58

@peachgreen @Wearywithteens

Fascinating fact

Jefferson and Adams both died on the same 4th July.

Adams last words were "Jefferson lives" though Jefferson had predeceased him moments before

VanyaHargreeves · 28/10/2019 22:00

Genuinely didn't rate Matilda

Was hugely disappointed. Only one or two good set pieces, not many good songs, amazing choreography though

Found the library sections long and annoying

peachgreen · 28/10/2019 22:06

I enjoyed the Matilda soundtrack a lot more than the actual show - some of the songwriting is very clever but it's so fast it gets a bit lost on stage imo.

bruffin · 29/10/2019 07:00

I laughed so much with the Play that Goes wrong, recommended it to a friend who hated it
Yet to come across anyone i know personally who disliked Hamilton

My personal dislike was Everyones Talking About Jamie both DD ,(who was desperate to see it) and I came out and said "it was ok" i was so surprised at DDs reaction because it was everything she should have loved in a musical.
Dd then said lets go and enter BOM lottery and we won. BOM was perfect and just put ETAJ even more in the shade. I

Play that Goes Wrong is funny but it slightly overplays the joke.

anniemac1 · 29/10/2019 16:47

ghost stories is excellent.

InOtterNews · 29/10/2019 16:50

Came here to say Come From Away :)

So recommend Book of Mormon or Hamilton (though I didn't enjoy the latter as much as I hoped)

I haven't seen it but also heard good things about 9 to 5

YouBelongHere · 29/10/2019 16:55

Anything by Mischief Theatre so another vote for 'The Play That Goes Wrong' here! They also have 'The Comedy About a Bank Robbery' which I thoroughly enjoyed and 'Peter Pan Goes Wrong' is their seasonal show, that might be on.

bruffin · 29/10/2019 23:10

Dear Evan Hansen is definitely worth seeing.

Ohwiseone · 30/10/2019 00:03

Glad you’ve booked Book of Mormon. Saw it for the third time last weekend. Absolutely brilliant!
Also loved The play that goes wrong. Hilarious! But thought the comedy about a bank robbery was just silly and could predict all the slapstick beforehand.
Loved waitress but didn’t really enjoy Six, think I was expecting too much
Going to book Hamilton soon because everyone I know who has seen it, rave about it.

Witchend · 30/10/2019 01:07

We've just come back from Mary Poppins. Absolutely amazing.
Charlie Stemp, who plays Bert, is simply wonderful, especially managing to tap dance across the ceiling.
My daughter is already asking when we can see it again!
