To ask you to recommend a West End play to me?

GunpowderGelatine · 26/10/2019 23:04

I'm in London for a few days next month and will have enough time to see 2 West End plays - hurrah!

Last time I asked on MN a few months ago someone recommended Come From Away - which was amazing and I'm so happy I took the recommendation.

Sadly Les Mis isn't on again until December and I'd love to have seen Six but it's sold out on the dates I'm going Sad have seen Matilda and Wicked. It doesn't have to be a musical but please recommend any amazing West End plays you've seen.

TIA

Avoid Big
Did not enjoy

SalamanderOnHoliday · 27/10/2019 08:19

Everyone is talking about Jamie was really good.

I hated Hamilton as did the friend I went with. I’d really recommend listening to a bit of it first to see if it’s your kind of th8ng. The staging, acting, singing all incredible... but i could have left at the interval if it hadn’t cost me so much....

Touch8ng the void gets great reviews.

Fruityb · 27/10/2019 08:22

School of Rock is awesome.

Only Fools and Horses is so much fun!

I’d watch Matilda every week if I could. Just that opening bit at the school with the letters even - most incredible thing I’ve ever seen:

I'm pregnant (almost ready to drop) and two of my must dos were to see Hamilton and Book of Mormon for a second time before baby - they are both so good!! I did this - and just wanted to see them both again so did not have the desired effect. (Now Book of Mormon is touring and I am hoping to be in the position to leave the baby with my parents for long enough to see it by the time it gets to us or I will be gutted 😂) Go and see them for me OP!

bruffin · 27/10/2019 08:47

Everyones talking about Jamie is really average, not worth paying full price for tickets, you can get tickets on Groupon now.

If you love Les Mis the staged version currently on is excellent

I really loved
Waitress
Hamilton
9to5 if you want cheesy and light hearted
Book of Mormon (look up lottery)
I would go and see Come From Away again tbh
On my list is
&Juluet and Six

Big is not good, great production values, good performances but really bad songs

Going to see Dear Evan Hanson on tuesday so will report back.

Reallybadidea · 27/10/2019 08:53

The Play That Goes Wrong and Comedy About A Bank Robbery are both absolutely hilarious.

Medievalist · 27/10/2019 09:03

I didn't think the Comedy about a Bank Robbery was anywhere near as good as the Play that Goes Wrong or Peter Pan Goes Wrong.

Medievalist · 27/10/2019 09:05

Bruffin - adult ds and his gf went to see Dear Evan Hanson and said it was really good.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/10/2019 09:05

School of Rock was amazing!

Holidayaddict · 27/10/2019 09:17

Big is not good, great production values, good performances but really bad songs

Agree 100%

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 27/10/2019 09:36

Witness for the Prosecution - really gripping and amazing venue!

Absolutely. Seats so comfy with serious legroom set you up brilliantly for watching one of the best versions of this play I've ever seen.

HappydaysArehere · 27/10/2019 09:39

The Play That Goes Wrong. Hilarious.

UOkhun77 · 27/10/2019 09:45

School of Rock and Book of Mormon are great fun!

I agree that the songs weren’t good but I enjoyed Big anyway - loved the 80’s costumes and it’s so nostalgic having grown up watching the film millions of times.

GunpowderGelatine · 27/10/2019 12:45

Right everyone thank you so much for your recommendations I have booked the Play That Goes Wrong and Book of Mormon - I think I'll leave Hamilton until next time! Grin

Another vote for Hamilton, which is amazing, and also Book of Mormon (so good I saw it twice).

The Woman in Black is a good too, the atmosphere builds up very well.

Holidayaddict · 27/10/2019 13:44

Right everyone thank you so much for your recommendations I have booked the Play That Goes Wrong and Book of Mormon

Heard good things about both of those OP and would love to see them myself - enjoy!

Whitney168 · 27/10/2019 13:49

I know the OP has booked now, but pleased to see so many people raving about the lower key 'Woman In Black' and 'Witness For The Prosecution'. Loved them both. (Setting for WFTP is just fabulous.)

I'm not a huge Tina Turner fan, but am hearing very good reviews about that, maybe I will re-think.

sophiasnail · 27/10/2019 17:45

We saw The Mousetrap yesterday and loved it!

Medievalist · 27/10/2019 18:01

I saw the Mousetrap a few weeks ago and didn't love it at all!

Waiting4Sprogo · 27/10/2019 21:01

I saw Mary Poppins yesterday. It was magical! Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is excellent, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole is fun. Six was brilliant, it’s a shame you can’t get tickets. The Mousetrap is a good classic and a London theatre rite of passage but you have to keep the secret at the end 🤫

Witchinaditch · 27/10/2019 21:10

Jersey boys hands down the best musical I’ve ever seen

KittyMcKitty · 27/10/2019 21:10

Ooh great suggestions! Is Hamilton worth the £100?

Personally I preferred Come From Away (as did many people I know) although Hamilton is very good.

Falsettos will still be in at The Other Palace I think, or if it has swapped to Amalie that is totally worth seeing.

There are daily rush tickets for Six.

Book of Mormon is good. Waitress is fun (Joe Sugg actually v good) and has Rush tickets. I think Hansard is still on at the National. Fiddler on the Roof closes on the 2nd.

Dear Evan Hanson and Be More Chill open next year.

bruffin · 27/10/2019 21:25

Kitty
Dear Evan Hanson opens next week, im going on Tuesday.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 27/10/2019 21:33

Everybody’s talking about Jamie is great.

Saw the newly opened Soho Cinders this weekend - superb! Would highly recommend.

KittyMcKitty · 27/10/2019 21:40

bruffin apologies my bad! We have tickets for February so in my mind I’ve decided it’s not opening till then!!

Also excited for the Heathers Tour next year. Now if only Beetlejuice would come to the UK.
