I love the Winter White Company candle but can not justify their prices sadly.
A lot of them out there seem to have a real chemical smell - can anyone recommend a nice range that won’t break the budget but is also lovely?

If Dunnes stores deliver to the UK, the Helen james candles are incredible

hipslikecinderella · 22/10/2019 16:37

Get nice branded ones in tk maxx

QueenArseClangers · 22/10/2019 16:49

St Eval candles are lovely and have a good throw. Their Bay and Rosemary One is my favourite and they’re not too bad for about a tenner for the large ones.

HattieBugatti · 22/10/2019 17:01

@Bellasblankexpression

I use Airwick scented candles, (all year round actually,) The smell of the ones I get are lush. And they're only about £1.99 to £2.75 each. Usually from Wilkos or B & M, but you can get them most places.

The 'mulled wine' one (pic 1,) and the 'sugar apple and warm cinnamon' (pic 2,) are lovely! The 'purple blackberry spice' is nice too (pic 3.)

Give them a whirl! You won't regret it! Smile

I like the Seasalt one from St Eval (not Christmassy though)

ChateauMyself · 22/10/2019 17:06

Another vote for St Eval.

Inspiritus is my go to Christmas smell.

Schwibble · 22/10/2019 17:08

Aldi have dupes of Jo Malone candles.

Venger · 22/10/2019 17:09

I was given candles from here as part of a gift basket for my birthday a few months ago and they're lovely, smell really nice without being sickly or overpowering

Speaking of Aldi, their reed diffusers are the best and longest lasting I have ever smelled.

HourglassTigger · 22/10/2019 17:11

St Eval, St Eval, St Eval....especially 'inspiritus'.
I would like to add you can get them for a steal from TK Maxx, but I just systematically bought them all.

Ponoka7 · 22/10/2019 17:14

If anyone likes jasmine, oddly enough Asda's jasmine candles are really nice. I'm not keen on some of the others I've tried of their's, though, but they've got that one right.

lowbudgetnigella · 22/10/2019 17:17

Another vote got Aldi, no1 and no 4 are lovely.
The no 1 body lotion is nice too

Whingebagbingsnemesis · 22/10/2019 17:18

I find the matalan ones give off lots of smell, much more so than other ones I've tried (and I've tried a lot). I've got a white jasmine one at the moment and its lovely.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 22/10/2019 17:19

Are St Eval candles really good? Are they nice and strong? I keep meaning to buy one, but I'm worried I will be disappointed. Literally the only candles I have ever tried that has been decently scented are Diptyque but at £42 a pop I'm definitely up for finding something cheaper!

I found the Aldi Jo Malone dupe rubbish tbh.

Bellasblankexpression · 22/10/2019 17:20

Thank you, some great suggestions! Hadn’t thought of TK maxx

Aldi Number 3 .... smells so expensive. Plus it comes in hand wash / lotion / diffuser. I first came across it in the loo of a high end restaurant and was really surprised as I thought the products were Jo M .

Difficultcustomer · 22/10/2019 17:23

For Christmas I like the M&S ones, especially the frankincense one - can be reasonable value if on three for two.

impostersyndrome · 22/10/2019 17:25

I love these tin candles by Muji. Gorgeous fragrances (except the wood fire one Hmm) Available online: www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?lan=uk&ShopSel=y&sec=20&sub=14

fairislecable · 22/10/2019 17:30

I love the St Eval candles they have a lovely fragrance (not chemically) they cost around £10 but as the wax is so good they do last a long time.

I lit the sea salt one about 1 hour ago to mask cooking smells.

I also like the Daylesford ones, Fig is truly lovely but they are more expensive.

Blahdyblahblahblah · 22/10/2019 17:35

The gingerbread ones from Home Bargains are my absolute favourite.

MrsLEB · 22/10/2019 17:53

Home bargains ones are strong smelling. My absolute favourite strong smelling candles are woodwick but they aren't so cheap.

ElsieMc · 22/10/2019 18:00

Parks candles available from tkmaxx. At the upper end price wise for them so around £9.99. The aromatherapy ones are pretty strong, but there are others. You will be able to smell the scent in the room the next day.

Sand and Fog and DW are a medium scent candles from there also. S and F in particular try to make their candles look nice as well (wooden lids etc).

Sometimes tk's put Parks in clearance simply because they are over stocked so have a look there first.

I have been bought Jo Malone as a gift and whilst very nice, there is no way I would pay that kind of price. M and S used to do one called grapefruit and ginger which was really nice, but did not burn particularly well, there was funnelling.

demelza82 · 22/10/2019 18:13

St Eval all the way - great throw, long lasting. Embers is a lovely smoky xmassy smell bit I've loved all of them - Sea Salt isy go to

SilverySurfer · 22/10/2019 18:29

Make your own - it's very easy.

BirdIsland · 22/10/2019 18:53

This might be a stupid question but is it ok to use scented candles with a baby in the house? I have a vague idea that it's not, but don't know why and I love scented candles during winter!
