To not want my dd to go to London on the train?

Its a 2 hour journey on the train then the tube to where they want to go. Would you let yours do this? She's 13. Travelling with one other then meeting two friends en route.

Not at 13 I wouldnt

Chickaletta16 · 21/10/2019 18:29

Not at 13 no chance !

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:29

She's very confident and mature and I'm normally quite good aboit letting her do things but I just do not feel happy about it.

Is it something specific she wants to do?

SD1978 · 21/10/2019 18:30

Why are they going to London? Is it juts the journey you're uncomfortable with? 4 girls together seems pretty reasonable.

Louiselouie0890 · 21/10/2019 18:30

No i wouldnt

PullingMySocksUp · 21/10/2019 18:30

And is she used to other major cities or not at all?

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:30

They want to go to Camden market

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:31

She's used to travelling around London with me, but we only go 3 times a year!

I wouldn’t allow that at 13. 15 maybe but not 13

LivingDeadGirlUK · 21/10/2019 18:33

Hmmm 13 does sound young, but I was going up with friends when I was 14 to shop on Tottenham court road and in Camden. If she is sensible and with sensible friends it would probably be ok.

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:33

She's super confident, almost over confident. I think I'm going to say no.

Oh god no - Camden market! Maybe I’m getting old but it’s the same tat you see on every street market across Europe!

raspberryk · 21/10/2019 18:35

Depends on the 13 year old but when I was 13 we went on a school trip to France and were sent off in the town and left to our own devices til the evening when we had to meet back at the bus. Never saw a teacher the whole time. No one had phones or anything.
So yes I probably would, I used to go into a couple of local cities with a friend or a few friends at 13 e.g. Nottingham skating and Milton Keynes on the train.

bigchris · 21/10/2019 18:35

No, just go too and amuse yourself at the market while they go round !

underthebridgedowntown · 21/10/2019 18:36

I think 13 is fine - I was doing that in year 8 with friends - it was an hour train into London rather than 2 hours, but not much different really.

What are you worried is going to happen?

Ellapaella · 21/10/2019 18:36

Personally I wouldn't allow this at13, and I'm fairly relaxed about stuff like this. My 14 year old would fly alone to his Dads at that age (domestic UK flight). I think with that length of journey on the train there is too much scope for things to go wrong. Trains are delayed, often even cancelled. What if they ended up missing the train home or having to deal with delays/ unexpected changes?
I was on a train recently that we all had to get off due to problems further up the line.. it was actually really chaotic and busy and no one knew what was going on or how to get home etc.
I wouldn't be particularly concerned about them navigating the underground but I wouldn't want them doing the long train journey personally.

Whattodoabout · 21/10/2019 18:36

I did this from the age of ten, met my Dad in Kings Cross. It was 2.5 hours from where I grew up and I was fine, I enjoyed it tbh. Took my friend with me a few times at 13/14/15 as well. 13 year old’s are pretty independent and capable if you quit helicopter parenting.

QuaterMiss · 21/10/2019 18:37

I wouldn’t be keen on four 13 year old girls wandering around Camden Market. Particularly if they’re not Londoners.

Until the past couple of years I might have allowed the train journey. But England is not quite itself right now.

Stompythedinosaur · 21/10/2019 18:37

I grew up about an hour from London and was going in with friends at that age, so it seems pretty normal to be. Maybe talk through a few eventualities beforehand (if lost, separated or loose their money)?

user1493494961 · 21/10/2019 18:37

I'd let her go, it's great that she and her friends have the confidence to want to go. Encourage it.

TeenPlusTwenties · 21/10/2019 18:38

I would perhaps in theory provided:

  • she is confident on the tube
  • is sensible and friends are sensible
  • she has done independent train travel before more locally, as have her friends

I'd only do it with discussions on 'what ifs' and keeping in contact and together.

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:40

Oh god i don't know what to do!!

Kanga83 · 21/10/2019 18:41

Personally, and living near London- no I wouldn't. It's darker earlier, Camden market although busy isn't what I would call safe either. In summer, when it's lighter and more touristy possibly.
