To not want my dd to go to London on the train?

Its a 2 hour journey on the train then the tube to where they want to go. Would you let yours do this? She's 13. Travelling with one other then meeting two friends en route.

Yeah I know she'll get over it.

I feel really relieved.

Back story was that I was supposed to be driving up with her and dd17 tomorrow. Car just failed its MOT Sad won't be ready until Thursday. Dd was going to come with us then meet her friends for an hour or so.

No because it is Camden Market. Overpriced tat as others have noted.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/10/2019 18:56

At that age - well, all I have to say is ‘creepy guys’.

My god daughter is a bit older but even at that age she was getting unwanted attention (and she is a confident London girl).

Even my son got ‘chatted up’ on the bus at around 12 by some creep who hadn’t seen my mil standing behind him (until she gave him both barrels very loudly and he scurried off at the next stop).

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 21/10/2019 18:56

Ah, just seen your update. Sorry she’s upset but really impress on her the safety.
My friends son was badly attacked in Camden in broad daylight on a weekend (total stranger/wrong place wrong time situation), not so long ago. He’s 14.

JorisBonson · 21/10/2019 18:56

Definitely not Camden Market

Chocolatecake12 · 21/10/2019 18:57

Her crying shows she’s not mature enough to deal with it!
I have an almost 13 year old ds and I won’t let him travel on the train alone for 1 hr 20 mins to visit his dad in London. Dad can’t be relied upon to be there the other end. I let him travel with his older brother whose 17.
I think in 2 years maybe I’ll say yes.

There must be lots of places she can go to with friends that’s not so far away.

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:57

Is Camden Market over priced tat? They want vintage trendy clothes!

OP posts:
WelcomeToShootingStars · 21/10/2019 18:57

2 hours can be as far as Manchester. Not a chance!

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 18:58

We have a nice city about 40 mins away on the train, I'd be happier for her to go there first.

HellonHeels · 21/10/2019 18:58

"Guaranteed they'll be offered pot" WTF cannabis is on offer all over the UK, it's not restricted to Camden market! That is a ridiculous objection.

exexpat · 21/10/2019 18:59

Camden is definitely overpriced tat. They could go to Spitalfields/Brick Lane for vintage - that's where DD goes - but it is still much more expensive than your local charity shop...

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 19:00

Good shout about brick lane. I'll tell dd17. Our local charity shops are not good (tiny rural market town)

I'm a bit confused op, I thought you said you couldn't go? I get you can't drive but why can't you go on the train? You could sit in a different carriage? Sorry if I've misunderstood.

Portobello better for this ime.

Haxdret · 21/10/2019 19:02

I can't afford the train. It would cost nearly 200 for me dd17 and dd13 to go! My company pays petrol!

OP posts:
Haxdret · 21/10/2019 19:03

Isn't portobello super expensive?

Not in a month of Sundays. Not because she's stupid or irresponsible, but because of the target young teenage girls on a train would pose for nefarious intentions.

CravingCheese · 21/10/2019 19:04

No.
and super confident / over confident isn't necessarily the safest character trait when it comes to these things.

00100001 · 21/10/2019 19:04

Isn't there a parent if one of the other 3 kids that can escort them?

Literally let the girls take the lead, but just be there for supervision??

totallyradllama · 21/10/2019 19:04

I'm a bit confused about this thread. I also would be really unsure about this at 13 and wd probably say no.

But then there are other threads where people are happy for their 11yo kids to travel by train for an hour across London to go to a selective school

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/10/2019 19:05

Spitalfields is ok - at least it’s enclosed with places to eat. Shame they got rid of the clock!

7Worfs · 21/10/2019 19:05

@HellonHeels don’t be silly. There’s almost zero chance of drug offers in museums, tourist places and high traffic shopping in good areas.
At Camden Lock there’s often groups of guys hanging out smoking. I am yet to see such groups on Oxford St

Divebar · 21/10/2019 19:05

Well I wouldn’t worry about the overpriced tat personally - that’s what teenagers like but Camden is a big drinking area and attracts a lot of homeless etc around the tube station. You quite often see people unconscious/ asleep ( hard to tell the difference). People can also be a bit ranty when they have mental health problems. It’s also a pretty high crime area from memory. 2 hours is also a long way away....personally I would want an adult to travel to the area with them and then they could separate and meet up a few hours later. That way if something happens you’re only 20 minutes not 3 hours away.

CarolDanvers · 21/10/2019 19:05

I wouldn't say so. It's not just the market. There's quite a few vintage clothes shops in the side streets leading off the market too.

BlueJava · 21/10/2019 19:06

I think your DH made the right decision. I think she's too young and London's not a particularly nice place unless you know what you're doing/where you're going.
