AIBU to suggest that you aren't really an animal lover if you're not a vegan

I'm a meateater but I was chatting to a vegan friend of mine about this and I think she has a point. It makes no sense to call yourself an animal lover if you pay others to kill animals or take their milk and eggs when its perfectly possible to live without them. I couldn't help but agree with her, and, as a non-vegan, had to conceed that I don't really love animals. In fact, I'm putting the fact that they taste nice above their lives and well-being on a daily basis.

I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone on here had an argument against this.

I have never eaten any animal I have loved o don't feel guilty at all tbh.

gamerchick · 20/10/2019 21:32

Its quite telling that no counterarguements have been posted

Now I believe you even less. Why don't you own your shit instead of saying you were on the recieving end of some imaginary conversation.

Although I can guess why you didn't, going on past preachy threads on this topic.

I've yet to meet a vegan who makes their own processed mushroom.

Sarahlou63 · 20/10/2019 21:34

We just bought 2 piglets who we will ensure have a lovely life in a woodland enclosure with a warm, safe pen, lots of good food and no stress. Then we will eat them.

ToPlanZ · 20/10/2019 21:36

I don't love a random sheep in a field, I wouldn't get a rush of affection seeing a horse. I might pat it's head but wouldn't have strong enough feelings not to eat it. Wouldn't eat my cat though, I really do love him, which is not surprising as we have a bond.

Saying you are an animal lover is a bit odd really, it's like saying I'm a people lover. I just love all people! No one does really love all people and no I don't love all animals.

KylieKoKo · 20/10/2019 21:37

@gamerchick I'm not a vegan. I'm not sure what shit you want me to own.

Why are you so angry?

OP posts:
Hey1256 · 20/10/2019 21:38

YANBU at all.

I don't like animals, never have done but even I have a problem with eating meat. I still eat it but reluctantly.

So how you can claim to be an animal lover and still guzzle down a steak is beyond me.

gamerchick · 20/10/2019 21:39

Heh, no anger here Wink

KylieKoKo · 20/10/2019 21:39

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Do you think you can kill an animal and guarantee no suffering?

OP posts:
Wheat2Harvest · 20/10/2019 21:40

I'm not an animal lover. I have a practical approach to animals and that's where it ends.

Hence I have no problem with people eating meat, wearing fur or wearing leather shoes. Humans evolved to eat meat yet they can love their pet dog or cat or whatever.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

SusieOwl4 · 20/10/2019 21:42

So we all go vegan , so no farm animals even have a chance of life ? Or do you propose to breed them and then bury them when they die . Not all animals are treated badly you know ? And think of all the businesses you will lose and people out of work and the way land will be affected by intensive vegetable farming ? What do you think will be used as fertiliser ?

quincejamplease · 20/10/2019 21:43

I don't think you understand domestication. Or the natural world, frankly. But whatever.

Clownfish123 · 20/10/2019 21:44

I agree with you. I am a vegetarian that knows I should be a vegan but am just a bit too lazy and lacking in motivation to stick to it.
I am well aware that every time I eat dairy an animal somewhere has suffered and that means I'm putting my own convenience over an animal's welfare.
One day I will force myself to make that change, until then I know I am morally flawed and willing to admit it!

MarshaBradyo · 20/10/2019 21:44

We all have our own lines in the sand or whatever

No fur or angora
I do eat meat and wear leather
I want it to be as humane as possible

On loving animals. I’m ok with above and eat a lot of eggs mostly, and tuna.

(Eat not guzzle - Or other words that always end up on mn eating threads)

moobar · 20/10/2019 21:45

This type of goady thread is getting ridiculous. I don't even know why I'm biting but I'm sick of it. If I cam one here posting about your livelihoods and criticising what you do and making ignorant judgements without any idea of the real life situation I would be flamed or deleted.

Perhaps go and work on a farm for a month and see the blood, sweat tears and love that goes into that job. The sheer heartache and dedication to the animals and their welfare.

I will discuss it with you once you have done that.

Jinxed2 · 20/10/2019 21:45

I am a vegetarian and I love animals. The thought of ever eating meat again knocks me sick. I do not preach. I think ideally I’d be vegan but I love cheese and eggs Blush

Marinemarie · 20/10/2019 21:45

YANBU

NoSquirrels · 20/10/2019 21:45

I always wonder what people think would happen to pigs, if we all went vegan. Or cows.

Sheep can be shorn for wool. But most farmed animals have no other use to humans if they don’t provide food.

So I think eating carefully produced, humanely killed meat is completely in agreement with being an animal lover.

Ask most farmers if they care deeply about their livestock.

Vulpine · 20/10/2019 21:45

I agree. Im not a vegan but im also not an animal lover as such.

BIWI · 20/10/2019 21:46

As many others have said, I love animals. But I also love to eat meat and fish (and the eggs of other animals)

So kill me.

KylieKoKo · 20/10/2019 21:46

@susieowl4

I'm not proposing anything.

Also I'm not sure why you think the animals would be bred if we didn't eat them.

OP posts:
Oakmaiden · 20/10/2019 21:47

I love bacon. Does that count?

Fuckwheresitgone · 20/10/2019 21:47

Problem is OP if everyone was Vegan there would be no cows, no pigs, no sheep, no chickens. I like seeing cows in the fields grazing contentedly; sheep cropping the grass, piggies sunbathing and chickens scratching around. We don't eat a lot of meat, because 'freedom' meat tends to be more expensive. I only buy locally where I know the animals have roamed freely. But appreciate we're lucky as we live rurally and local food is a big thing in our area.
The issue with being Vegan is air miles/ palm oil / synthetic foot ware / unless you can afford organic then many countries outside of the EU continue to use banned organophosphates, which cause issues to rivers not to mention the increased risk to human health of those who work the land of heavily sprayed crops. However my major issue is dairy alternatives which contain palm oil which is wiping out much of the primary rainforests, and henceforth those very precious Eco-systems, and animals therein. I don't think being vegan is much more environmentally friendly than being a meant eater. The best option is probably being a vegetarian.
But best thing, don't waste food, buy local, don't use Palm oil, don't eat fish, but buying local can be prohibitively expensive.

TSSDNCOP · 20/10/2019 21:48

It’s a problem that I can live with. I love my cats and I love other animals to the point I humanise them and raise money for their welfare. I simply don’t have that relationship with a chicken or a salmon, so I honestly can’t get worked up about eating them. When it comes to them and other animals such as cows and lambs I admit though that I should concern myself more about their welfare pre-slaughter, and I’ve made a move to buying my meat and eggs from a local farmer vs supermarket.

It’s the vegetarians I feel sorry for. All these years they’ve not eaten meat whilst being served shit in restaurants and now the Vegans are here to tell them they’ve been doing it all wrong. That’s got to hurt.

AliceAbsolum · 20/10/2019 21:48

Completely agree. You can love some animals and also be OK with the farming industry but it makes you a hypocrite, happy to fund torture and suffering on a mass scale because you're a slave to your taste buds.

NoSquirrels · 20/10/2019 21:50

I'm not sure why you think the animals would be bred if we didn't eat them

They wouldn’t. They’d go extinct. Our natural landscape (developed and worked by animals over centuries) would change completely.

You can’t grow arable crops on a Welsh hill farm.
