I love the old episodes of this on ITV 3 . They really reel you in - Olivia Colman was really good as the perpetrator in an episode from about 2009 - it's interesting looking at the cast of some of these episodes - it's another series that's attracted a lot of A list actors

@redexpat yes we bloody do Grin.

MrsToothyBitch · 23/10/2019 23:17

@madambee isn't the Danish MM appreciation the reason behind the Denmark-driven plot in the commerative special episode? To recognise the love? It's the one where Joanna Scanlon is an unhinged biscuit maker!

Lizzie0869 · 23/10/2019 23:29

Yes, I loved that episode! It was also the one where John and Sarah Barnaby's baby Betty was born. (A very well behaved baby that never cries and always goes to sleep on schedule! Grin)

theoriginalmadambee · 23/10/2019 23:39

@MrsToothyBitch
Yes it must be. I hated how they leaned on the noir theme... Dark and boring characters. Yes we are very forthright, but not that gloomy Grin.

So if we imagine you live in a MM world, what will your perception be of us after all this noir? Confused

BlackBatInBloodSucking · 24/10/2019 02:21

That's love for you - Tom paying £150 in a charity auction for one of Joyce's paintings in yesterday's episode!

And thank you to a pp or two for reminding me to re-watch the marvellous Father Brown series. I can't believe I forgot that one when I posted my list upthread.

Excuse the Hallowe'en name change mid-thread, but at least it fits with the subject!

Can I also recommend the books and DVDs from both the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and Agatha Raisin series.

Virginiaplain1 · 24/10/2019 07:27

I live in a town that's often used for filming MM. Locals now run (frequent and well supported) MM tours down the high street pointing out filming locations to groups of visitors from all over the world. The town hall has a 'Cawston Town Hall' sign that they will stick over the real sign if you want your photo taken there.
There's even been a bit of controversy over a planning application to put up 'red plaques' on buildings used as locations in different episodes. Town Council was all for it but District Council did not approve.

TheCanterburyWhales · 24/10/2019 07:44

It's called Inspector Barnaby here (Italy) sadly only shown on a minor channel but I have most of the JN ones on dvd that my mum used to record and send me

Apart from Joyce's hobbies and Cully's employment record, I remember reading that the sidekick Scott had snobbed the whole thing and left after (possibly) only one series?
The episode that I found creepiest was one where the perps had kept a decomposing (but not quite skeletal so even more euuuuuuw) body sitting in a bed.
I also strangely find murdery things comforting to watch. Morse is the absolute tops, but most of the others mentioned.

MrsToothyBitch · 24/10/2019 11:55

Just had a lovely rewatch of Destroying Angel! Thank you so much to whoever supplied the title!

WineOrGinOrBoth · 24/10/2019 14:26

Sitting here watching Bunny Cakes. Super with the marvellous Roger Allam.

theoriginalmadambee · 24/10/2019 14:35

Ha just found out they are showing Bergerac here atm.

We have so many reruns and when the series have finished, they start all over again. Some i know by heart by now.

MrsToothyBitch · 24/10/2019 15:06

I've moved on to Written in Blood now- poor Amy has just found a very bad dummy dear Ralph in the attic!

tillytrotter1 · 24/10/2019 16:00

I couldn't believe the newer Barnaby's sidekick as Brian May in Bohemian Rhapsody, he was amazing.

Lellochip · 24/10/2019 17:28

tillytrotter1 I went the other way, came from Brian May to Midsomer Grin

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 17:57

Cully's employment record
Grin

One of the best pieces of Barnaby family dialogue:

Tom: What's Cully up to these days, is she working?
Joyce: Yes, she's writing a book!

Obvs her "research" for said book leads her to some clues as to the murderer.

Not to mention her convenient jobs at the travel agent, Midsomer mobile library, etc. Perfect for sussing out suspects and/or who's been going on overseas jaunts to buy priceless orchids!

MrsToothyBitch · 24/10/2019 18:23

@PrivateSpidey I'm watching "The Hollow Man" and Cully's main job here appears to be looking after hysterical Joyce after another hobby ends in murder, buying CHUNKY marmalade and flirting with Nico so he's got a reason to be in a future episode! Joyce miraculously recovers by the end of the episode, presumably once she knows she's got away with it!

InFiveMins · 24/10/2019 18:26

Midsomer Murders is my fave show ever Grin it just has such a warm feel to it, despite all the murders! Grin we love it in our house.

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 18:31

InFiveMins yes it's so cosy isn't it?!? Despite, as you say, the murders Grin

MrsToothyBitch that's a great episode. Lol at the chunky marmalade!! I love Nico, he's great in Beyond the Grave as well, much better than Cully's later boyfriend and eventual husband, Simon (zzzzzzz....).

WineOrGinOrBoth · 24/10/2019 19:49

Doesn’t one of Cully’s amours get Murdered?

HerBigChance · 24/10/2019 20:02

Simon the theatrical producer got murdered, but I can't remember the title. The Richard Briars one.

I liked Nico better than Cully's husband too. Didn't they have the kitten called Killmouseki?

PrivateSpidey · 24/10/2019 20:17

The dark-haired guy, HerBigChance? Yes that sounds familiar. Maybe her husband wasn't called Simon then - but he wasn't a patch on Nico, whatever he was called!

CherryCheezcake · 24/10/2019 22:10

Killmouski belonged to Cully and Brad, he was another theatrical (director?) that she went on tour with. I think that was in series 1 or 2 but can't remember which episode

MrsToothyBitch · 24/10/2019 22:23

@HerBigChance - I watched the episode earlier! He's a Russian Blue kitten called Killmouski and it's in Written in Blood. Cully leaves him with Joyce & Tom to go & do a Shakespeare tour of Poland with Brad. Tom is VERY allergic to the cat (who is gorgeous) so it's almost KillBarnabi never mind Killmouski!

It's the writers circle ep (Scumbag!) & another favourite of mine.

Lonelykettleshed · 27/10/2019 22:51

I'm a bit late to the party but , in case anyone is still following, I love MM and have recently discovered the Midsomer Maniacs podcast. The presenters are directing each episode in turn. Presenters are American (and Canadian I think) and they obviously love MM whilst not being afraid to laugh at it. Also love how the find certain things that seem entirely normal to me (fetes, maypole dancing etc) incredibly odd.

HerBigChance · 28/10/2019 13:17

Thanks @MrsToothy and @Private

The one where Cully's friend/potential amour Simon Fletcher was murdered was Death's Shadow, series 2.

MrsToothyBitch · 31/10/2019 21:04

Dark Autumn alert!!! It's on ITV hub atm!! 🎃🎃🎃
