I love the old episodes of this on ITV 3 . They really reel you in - Olivia Colman was really good as the perpetrator in an episode from about 2009 - it's interesting looking at the cast of some of these episodes - it's another series that's attracted a lot of A list actors

I love the inventive was people get offed. The trebuchet firing fine vintage wines was my favourite.

Charley1988 · 20/10/2019 21:11

I love the middle class preciousness of many of the characters

Watching an episode of MM right now. We have it on series link, and it’s on ITV3 so much that it means we always have some available when we’re in need of comfort TV. Barnaby #1 and Jones is clearly the Golden Age, but I’m not overly fussed.

Incidentally, I’ve read my way through all the books (6 or 7 of them) and they’re great. Yes, darker and the characters of Barnaby and Troy are less twinkly but they are well written and ingeniously plotted.

I went into labour whilst watching Midsomer Murders.

I like the episode where Orlando bloom gets stabbed in the stomach with a pitchfork.

Love seeing all the different character actors. Sometimes playing different parts in multiple episodes. There was two who played the sister and nephew of the characters they had originally played (and been murdered by Emily Mortimer). Mind boggling.

Tinkerbell456 · 20/10/2019 21:26

What amazed me was the bizarre ways people got murdered. A gargoyle falling on their head. A whole bunch of cheese falling on them. I mention but a few!< One scene I remember is Old Barnaby helping Troy break up a pub fight. The face of Old Barnaby ( Mr Nettles) as the nobbled fist came towards him, the dawning horror, was priceless.

I'm just posting to say hello to Private because I'm psychic and I know she'll be along soon.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 20/10/2019 21:39

I watched one of the early ones yesterday- Written in Blood with Anna Massey. A perfect afternoon. The book is even better.

When my dad was alive, we used to watch MM in our own homes then call up each other in the ads to work out who was going to be offed next and whodunit.

francienolan · 20/10/2019 21:44

I loved the one where people kept getting set on fire alone in a church, because of the way the door was being opened or something.

I used to watch it with my mother, back in the states. It was on PBS, one per week. They only had a couple of series of it licensed there so there was a period where we ended up watching the same few again and again. It used to be a big deal for us when it was on! Now that I live here and it's on every day I don't watch it anymore, it's no fun without her. (But my husband and I are watching SVU on NowTV, so it's been replaced!)

My godmum lives in one of the villages they use a lot and I was watching one once and spotted they were filming in the church I got married in, very confusing as the outside shots were not correct!!!!

Drabarni · 20/10/2019 21:53

francienolan

Was that the one with Richard Briars?

Still looking for the title of my favourite, I know it was one of the first series I'd guess at 1-3.

MrsToothyBitch · 20/10/2019 21:58

I love a bit of MM, especially the darker ones! Also love spotting people appear in multiples, especially if they are "resurrected" for their second appearance! I'm also a believer in Joyce probably having got away with quite a few murders. Aided & abetted by Cully. Their numerous hobbies & jobs were mighty coincidental, otherwise!

Tom B & Jones are my dream team, then Tom B & Troy. I'm especially grateful for the episode where Jones is singing in the shower & we get a lovely, steamy view! V fond of some of the eps Pp have mentioned, too. We all seem to enjoy the same ones!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:00

I find it incredibly cosy tv, along with Miss Marple, and Poirot! I think it’s the old English villages combined with gruesome murders which is so comforting Grin my favourite was the woman who was tumble dried to death, closely followed by Martine Muchucheon being crushed by a giant cheese!

DuggeesWoggle · 20/10/2019 22:00

I was going to mention that new Barnaby was in MM as a character in an earlier episode, flouncy! Can't remember if he did it or not.

Do you remember Troy having a bit of a fling with Cully? Just a snog I think. He was a bit of a chump and had really old fashioned views (remember the episode with a lesbian couple?! Troy couldn't handle it!) which Barnaby always pulled him up on.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:04

Tom Barnaby had a bit of the eye for the ladies in a few episodes, he would sometimes look over when he was with Joyce in bed in her flanalette pyjamas, eye mask and face pack with a slight shake of the head......

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:07

Remember when Tom Barnaby got high on weed through inadvertently having tea and cake at a very old couples house?Troy was like WTF??when Tom was suddenly skipping about and full of the joys of spring!

Drabarni · 20/10/2019 22:07

I've just found the best episode ever. It's called 'death and Dreams" probably the darkest one you'll ever see.
Absolutely excellent and a must see if you haven't already.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 20/10/2019 22:10

Wasn’t that DS Scott Dugees Or was it Cully had a bit of a thing for him? He was the fittest out of all of them IMO

DuggeesWoggle · 20/10/2019 22:10

Yes the Bunny Cakes, Betty! Great episode Grin
