I love the old episodes of this on ITV 3 . They really reel you in - Olivia Colman was really good as the perpetrator in an episode from about 2009 - it's interesting looking at the cast of some of these episodes - it's another series that's attracted a lot of A list actors

I was definitely around when it started, but was bright up on Morse & Frost, my mum was apparently not a Midsomer fan. If I'm perfectly honest I've only watched the ones I have because of a soft spot for the actor who played Nelson Grin but shall check out the older seasons!

Drabarni · 22/10/2019 16:33

Some useless info here, and a bit of music.

Theremin, invented in the 1920's. Enjoy Thanks

PrivateSpidey · 22/10/2019 16:38

lello you won't regret it!

Just watching Beyond the Grave and remembering one of Troy 's best lines: "Just a normal day - nutters and more nutters" Grin

theoriginalmadambee · 22/10/2019 16:58

OMG love this thread and MM.

MM gives such a realistic view of how brits live Wink. Such big lovely houses and then you all complain on MN.

Scandi here, we call MM for 'hygge murders', really awful murders but so nice and pretty Grin. And we think this is how you all live and act.

But please, please pass a law bringing JN back and if not possible make DCI Jones take over (as they did in Lewis) please?

IfIShouldFallFromGraceWithGod · 22/10/2019 17:51

I love a good, civilised murder😁
MSM, Agatha Christie, Father Brown, Vera and Death in paradise (although Ardal O is dire)
I thought she was called Callie so thanks for educating me. I watching it in ITV3 now
They never comment on the high %of serial killers do they

Wonkybanana · 22/10/2019 18:03

I often wonder how come Barnaby never gets hauled up before the Chief Constable, given how many murders there are, and how when one happens there are usually at least two more before Barnaby works it out. If that was real life it would be on the 6 o'clock news Grin.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 22/10/2019 19:11

It’s pure joy watching them. Dh & dcs away next week & I’ll be binge watching them. Heaven.

pigsDOfly · 22/10/2019 19:32

I love Midsomer Murders.

Midsomer must be the most violent place on earth. All those serial killers lurking in rural England, doesn't bear thinking about.

I'm also amazed at how many hobbies and skills Joyce has, I'm surprised she has time to do anything else.

And the amount of murders she's been a close witness to, it's incredible that she isn't completely traumatised by now.

Someone mentioned Sykes up thread, I loved that dog. He was so well trained and had such a cute face. It was sad day when he went.

Ninabean17 · 22/10/2019 19:43

I love Midsomer murders. It's probably my favourite program..

I'm not keen on the new Barnaby though, John Nettles will always be the best one.

I've got every episode with Nettles, tried to get into the new ones but just couldn't do it. It felt like they were trying to get as many 'celebrities' in every episode to try and boost the ratings.

Its not the same anymore 😟

WineOrGinOrBoth · 22/10/2019 20:24

I call Joyce the secret assassin

Ohyesiam · 22/10/2019 20:28

I’ve never seen it. Is it actually set in Midsomer in Somerset?

MrsToothyBitch · 22/10/2019 20:57

@PrivateSpidey perhaps we should rename them all, friends style?
.The one where Jones takes a shower
.The one where Neil Dudgeon is a gardener
.The one where Orlando Bloom meets a pitchfork
.The one with the psycho children
. The one with the creepy undertaker
. The many one where Joyce goes on a killing spree and gets away with it gets a new hobby

MrsToothyBitch · 22/10/2019 21:01

Oh and of course:
. The one with the trebuchet
. The one with death by cheese
. The one with "Bunny Cakes"
Grin

NotYoonique · 22/10/2019 21:12

Does anyone remember an episode where it turns out the young couple are only pretending to have a baby and that they are actually related and have a disease where they can't sleep so will eventually die?

MrsToothyBitch · 22/10/2019 21:18

@NotYoonique - that's a Lewis episode, "Falling Darkness", I think.

@Madambee I'd LOVE Jones back (preferably in the shower) but don't think the actor will oblige. Plus the " Inspector Barnaby" name is the title in some markets overseas.

HerBigChance · 22/10/2019 21:21

NotYoonique, that's a Lewis episode.

NotYoonique · 22/10/2019 21:25

Blush oops! My mother is a big fan of these programmes and the odd plot sticks but it seems like I have merged them in my head and got the wrong series

HerBigChance · 22/10/2019 21:25

Jones played Warren in This Life. I bloody wish they'd repeat that, or put it on Netflix.

Re the title, I gather in France it's called Barnaby because Murders is too close to merde in sound. Anyone know if that's definitely the case?

theoriginalmadambee · 22/10/2019 21:33

@MrsToothyBitch
It's called Barnaby here, but who cares? We just about managed to get the Morse/Lewis swap, soo perhaps they could challenge the viewers one more time Grin.

And the actor playing Jones, he needs an offer he can't refuse. (Yes I'm quite fed up of N. Dudgeon, sorry). Plus my DD would be glued to the telly if it was Jones Wink.

Tanith · 22/10/2019 21:45

"I'm also amazed at how many hobbies and skills Joyce has, I'm surprised she has time to do anything else."

I'm not. The area where I live is full of middle-aged women like her, whose children have now grown up and mostly left home: the daytime classes around here are many and varied.
She doesn't have anything else to do with her time.

PrivateSpidey · 22/10/2019 21:46

NotYoonique to be fair, that does sound like Midsomer material Grin

I love the description "hygge murders".

I'm off to watch the rest of Beyond the Grave - I have tea and a fun size Twix! Joy!!

Zeldasmagicwand · 22/10/2019 21:54

Nope, I've never understood the attraction of this programme. It's just so white, cheesy and trite and John Nettles is annoyingly smug. Confused

GlacindaTheTroll · 22/10/2019 22:05

HerBigChance French for 'murder' is 'meurtre', so I don't think shit would need to come in to it.

PrivateSpidey · 23/10/2019 14:50

MrsToothyBitch I like your idea for renaming the episodes Grin

Usually they're described as: "After a local ne'er do well/glamorous socialite is murdered, Barnaby uncovers a web of intrigue and dark secrets". Which could basically describe any episode...

Gindrinker43 · 23/10/2019 14:56

I love it but got wound up this week. They featured a farm in late spring early summer, but the farmer was out shooting game. Game shooting starts much later, the continuity was awful, crop circles and shooting dont happen at the same time of year!
