To ask for your recommendations on treatments to tighten the beginnings of the dreaded jowls...

Just that really.

I'm 42, not many wrinkles, but by Christ, I look like a battered handbag. Grin

I'm not overweight, nor skinny. My face just looks knackered and my biggest issue is my jawline. It is starting to age me.

I don't need lectures on being vain, as I'm not. I'm just hating how I look and just feel I look a bit battered round the edges. I just look old and baggy and would love first hand recommendations for treatments to tighten my jawline and look less haggard please.

Thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,
Haggered Old Bat, Bucks. Blush

OMG @upaladderagain

That's awful 😢

DianneWhatcock · 18/10/2019 12:31

I've been using a facial roller from the body shop for past few months, that's meant to stimulate blood flow and kinda tone things up.
Might be worth a try, cheaper than some of these options some of which don't seem to work anyway!

BitOfFun · 18/10/2019 17:02

Shearwater, what load-bearing exercises do you recommend for the jaw line? While a healthy diet and exercise are obviously good for one's general health, I still cannot see that they would help the appearance of jowls specifically. Losing weight (and even exercising) can make sagging skin even worse, if anything.

Magnificentbeast · 18/10/2019 17:08

Yes please! I was googling this topic just the other day.

Thanks for posting OP.

KitchenDancefloor · 18/10/2019 17:30

Watching with interest to see if someone has a cheap/free solution.

Ideally I'm hoping for a miraculous after pic due to face yoga. Halo

I'm like you OP, early 40s and have a softer jaw line than a few years ago. It's not noticeable to other people but I know how this goes - my mum has given me her genes in spades.

Your skin looks greats though!

AlexaAmbidextra · 18/10/2019 18:26

There really is no cheap and easy quick fix to jowls. You may get somewhat of an improvement with judicious use of injectables by a skilled practitioner but this will need to be repeated at intervals. Thread lifts are good in theory but the reality is often disappointing. The only solution that will make a real and lasting difference is surgery. ie. lower face lift.

KitchenDancefloor · 18/10/2019 18:54

I have a needle phobia which is why I was pinning my hopes on something gentle.

Oh well deputy dawg here I come.

At least I have an excuse to quit running thanks to this thread!

RuggyPeg · 18/10/2019 20:08

Interesting that a pp mentioned horse riding and ageing. I've ridden all my life and apart from the start of jowls, the most ageing part of my face is my slipped malar fat pads ☹️ Ah well, I'm not giving horses up anytime soon......

Incidentally, my friend has recently had a face lift and it's gone very badly wrong and she's been in and out of hospital ever since.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 18/10/2019 20:13

Some really interesting input here. Thank you all.

@DianneWhatcock have you seen any difference with the rollers?

I've booked in next Wednesday to see the Dr at the place I ocassionally have Botox to see what treatments are available / advised, then I'll research the treatments and probably post on here to see if anyone has experience of them.

@Migrainefun Do you have any before and after pics of your cheek fillers that you'd be willing to share please?

I've heard face yoga is quite effective but you have to do it a lot like a few times a day and that's tricky. Look up Eva (someone) gave yoga. When I do her exercises I can definitely feel my facial muscles aching when I've done it but I run out of motivation after a few days.

Fillers are really expensive I asked about my jowels and was told I'd need 4 shots at 600 quid each. Much more expensive than botox

LilyJade · 18/10/2019 20:49

I've got Eva Fraser face exercises book.
Supposed to prevent jowls & other signs of ageing.
I will hopefully get round to trying the exercises soon, as I can't afford any fillers / Botox etc!!

BitOfFun · 18/10/2019 21:20

Ooh, can you describe her advice on jowls, LilyJade?

DianneWhatcock · 19/10/2019 10:31

@GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery

Yes I think there is a slight difference with the rollers, I do it for about 1/2 minutes while in the shower.

kjhkj · 19/10/2019 10:33

hifu

DianneWhatcock · 19/10/2019 11:31

@kjhkj does HIFU actually work? Some very mixed reviews online

I also wanted to add re the running I've been running for a year now, not long distance or particularly fast but I do about 8-10k a week average. And if anything I think my skin looks better not worse. And tbh what it's done for my fitness levels and mental health is worth a bit of extra ageing if it does one day take its toll. so ladies who run / want to run plse dont let it put you off the benefits are amazing x

Ponoka7 · 19/10/2019 11:40

Fibroblast.

I have a home RF device which helps, but I'm going for Fibroblast in the new year.

Ponoka7 · 19/10/2019 11:43

@DianneWhatcock
"does HIFU actually work? Some very mixed reviews online"

It possibly will in your 40's. I had it done professionally and then bought the home kit. Which makes a difference still.

But after weight loss and heading towards mid 50's, i think i need fibroblast.

Ponoka7 · 19/10/2019 12:01

" in your 50s, only a facelift does the trick."

If you want the jawline you had up until your late 30's, then perhaps. But most of us accept some aging and then there are changing treatments all the time and the best start is a bit of Googling.

Then a consultation.

I use a Nurse practitioner who just now just does cosmetic work, but keeps her prices reasonable.

Her before and after pictures are on her Social Media pages, which helps show realistic results on ordinary people.

Loving the French horn thing Grin
Sorry about your year OP. Grief and sadness does really take its toll. Actually, the reverse is also true: laughing a lot and happiness can help sagging faces (not that yours is bad at all) although it's easier said than done if you are low. Flowers

kjhkj · 19/10/2019 12:15

I had it done a couple of months ago. I can see a slight difference (but it takes 3 months to show the full results anyway). I think if you had a series of treatments it works. I have friends who have had a series in their 40s and they definitely look better.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 19/10/2019 12:34

@IfNot thank you. I'm about to restart Laughter Yoga / Laughter Therapy. It is the best form of medicine. Grin

DianneWhatcock · 19/10/2019 18:21

@kjhkj did it hurt? Glad you're seeing good results.

kjhkj · 21/10/2019 16:29

It only hurt on the very highest of settings and then it was a quick zap burny type of pain like with laser hair removal.

FuzzyPuffling · 21/10/2019 16:39

I was told (and I have no idea if this has any effect but I do it anyway) to stick lower jaw out and up, bottom teeth over top teeth, Smile (it all goes tight) and gently tap the jaw area with two fingers.
Do not try it in public.
