Just that really.

I'm 42, not many wrinkles, but by Christ, I look like a battered handbag. Grin

I'm not overweight, nor skinny. My face just looks knackered and my biggest issue is my jawline. It is starting to age me.

I don't need lectures on being vain, as I'm not. I'm just hating how I look and just feel I look a bit battered round the edges. I just look old and baggy and would love first hand recommendations for treatments to tighten my jawline and look less haggard please.

Thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,
Haggered Old Bat, Bucks. Blush

As much as I hate my jaw @AlexaAmbidextra, not sure it's at quite that stage yet.

Well to be fair you did describe yourself as a battered handbag! Looking at your pic I don’t think you have much to worry about yet.

Expo · 17/10/2019 23:26

I have asked my derm about this. Recommendation was radio frequency or hylauronic acid injections but I am not yet convinced on either of them.

@GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery

Eeek No idea! I've just heard about it and that it's meant to be good.

BungleIsTheNextIt · 17/10/2019 23:36

You can get botox to help tighten the area. I had it done recently, called a "Nefertiti lift". Very impressed with the results. I wanted filler but they didn't think I was at that stage yet.

Migrainefun · 17/10/2019 23:38

As an Aesthetic nurse... Cheek filler. Lifts the pre jowel really nicely.

PickAChew · 17/10/2019 23:39

You could pull it all back and tape it together

BungleIsTheNextIt · 17/10/2019 23:40

@Migrainefun actually yes, this too. I've had cheek and tear trough filler and that did help but it didn't totally solve the problem for me. Love the overall result the cheek filler gave me on my lower face and if you get it done well, it can be very subtle.

RueCambon · 17/10/2019 23:41

I need a nefertiti lift I think.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 17/10/2019 23:43

@AlexaAmbidextra you're very kind. Flowers

@Migrainefun the main doctor of my local clinic is a GP partner of my doctor's surgery that it's attached, so I do trust him to a certain degree and planned on booking a consultation, but wanted first hand experience of treatments to compare against. Fillers I wouldn't have even considered, as I already look like a hamster, so your post is interesting. Thank you.

@PickAChew probably a tad more invasive than I'm willing to / able to afford at the mo, but thank you so much.

@RueCambon think that's been mentioned up thread. Looks interesting. Would love first hand reviews.

Sorry @PickAChew just watched the video. Thought it was the surgical take and pull procedure you were alluding to.

Sometimes it's just the anterior part of the cheek that needs lifting, sometimes your fat pad at the front slips down with time and lifting this tends to lift the lower face too. I always know its time to have my cheeks done when my double chin/jowels reappear!

shearwater · 17/10/2019 23:52

Regular weight-bearing exercise and cut down the alcohol.

BitOfFun · 18/10/2019 01:20

What possible specific effect could that have on facial skin sagging, shearwater?

EmeraldShamrock · 18/10/2019 01:54

Try facial yoga at home. I should do it myself.
I exercise my neck because it is long and already starting to wrinkle and gather, I get a fright when I catch myself in the mirror.
I do neck stretches now.

Errr...yes why would I imagine diet and exercise affects your appearance? Hmm

  • Drinking too much alcohol makes your face fatter and prone to sagging and jowels over time. Google it! As does a poor diet generally.
  • Your face has muscles as well and regular exercise tones it.
RuggyPeg · 18/10/2019 07:09

I've had profhilo (hyaluronic injections)....it did nothing. Same with caci, nuface and radio frequency (yes, I'm obsessed!!). I wouldn't even begin to think about threadlifts or hifu (read reviews.....there's not many good ones). 42 is very young for anything too drastic. Wait a few more years, 46/7 ish when your face starts to look like a melted welly and then think about fillers and then in your 50s, only a facelift does the trick.

So sorry to hear about your mum and other losses too. It's bloody awful isn't it.

HavelockVetinari · 18/10/2019 07:17

What you want is a jawline thread lift. Google it.

place marking for inspiration

mid forties and jowls have started...my mother looks back at me in the mirror.

anecdotally, my older sister plays french horn professionally and has worse jowls than me.

IndieTara · 18/10/2019 07:43

HIFU could help. It's non Invasive and encourages collagen production. Lots of people use it for jowls. It takes about 3 months for results to show though

Rainbunny · 18/10/2019 08:33

I've been in the jowl club all my life basically, thanks to inheriting my dad's square jowly jawline. I'm slim and pretty fit but I have the heavy jawline of a larger person, people who see a photo of me and then meet me always tell me how much smaller I look in RL. I have the exact same jawline as the actress Susannah Harker for reference (if anyone remembers her) so I've been dreading the inevitable jowl development now I'm in my forties.

I've been considering the collagen stimulating laser treatment as the results seem genuine and good to very good from my research. My issue with that though is that the laser treatment can cost up to approx 1,300 pounds in my neck of the woods (for 3 treatments, up to 4 or 5 treatments may be recommended). Most importantly, it only lasts a few years before you need to repeat the treatment.

So looking more at the long game (and how my relatives' faces have aged) and total costs, I'm starting to think about a lower face lift (just have to get over my fear of surgical procedures...)

Bellasblankexpression · 18/10/2019 09:13

@GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery I do! But I’m away and they’re on my computer. I will dig them out this weekend and try to crop the rest of my face out 😂 I was very very skeptical but I’ve been really pleased with the result

Migrainefun · 18/10/2019 09:32

Just a quick point, exercise is good for losing weight but actually horse riding and running are the worst for making the malar fat pad slip down and ageing you like mad!

upaladderagain · 18/10/2019 10:16

I had a jaw line thread lift. It took about 6 weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside.
I was told the effects would last 3 - 4 years.
Exactly a year later I broke a tooth right at the back and after four attempts at root canal and extraction with my mouth wedged open my face was right back to square one.
Four grand poorer and still Deputy Dawg.
