Crikey that footage. I think they were kicking him which is awful but what a thing to do stand on that train. The man who got him down that can’t have been easy.

MarshaBradyo · 17/10/2019 13:15

I mean can’t have been easy to get him down.

Trafalger · 17/10/2019 13:16

@SquireOfGreenway

GrinGrin you couldn't be more wrong. I actually have all of those things. I work in the higher education sector doing sustainability! I shower regularly, have a great job and also a great life.

Things have to change. People don't like it, but we are speeding up the earths natural climate change at a very, very alarming rate. The general public all have a part to play, but until governments all over the world and businesses realise that this is a catastrophic event in the making then things won't change. Are you honestly saying thousands of scientists, David Attenborough and the United Nations are all wrong?

PreseaCombatir · 17/10/2019 13:19

It’s like AIBU playing out in real life.
AIBU?
Yes
No I’m not

Your bullshit behaviour is making you lose support.
No it’s not.

midnightmisssuki · 17/10/2019 13:20

There is a message yes, there is also the right way to put the message across. ER are just a bunch of wannabe anarchists who are inconveniencing ordinary people who are just trying to go about their day to day. They are absolute idiots and their message is not lost in a sea of stupidity, which saw that fool get up on a train. Christ. Such stupidity.

JorisBonson · 17/10/2019 13:20

We need to hit governments and big business.

I genuinely would like to know why and what XR think it will achieve.

recrudescence · 17/10/2019 13:22

It has completely undermined the good work done by some so far.

Do you believe that this is the only XR action that has royally pissed off the public? If so, you’ve got your head up your arse.

fromdownwest · 17/10/2019 13:24

@Trafalger

'you couldn't be more wrong. I actually have all of those things. I work in the higher education sector doing sustainability! I shower regularly, have a great job and also a great life.'

How very nice for you, enjoying your salary, final salary pension and enjoyment of work and life. Must feel great when you see people on minimum wage being prevented from going to work, to pay their bills.

This truly does show the ignorance of XR - laughing in the faces of the working class from their powerful and financially privileged position.

As an aside, the UK Co2 emissions have fallen massively over the last decade, so the Government is listening.

PreseaCombatir · 17/10/2019 13:26

Or in this case, literally kicking them in the face

ReanimatedSGB · 17/10/2019 13:28

I don't think many people are disputing the idea that climate change is a problem and measures need to be taken. But many people are unimpressed with smug, self-righteous tossers insisting that they are the only way forward, and managing to be racist, colonialist, classist and superlatively ignorant while they are at it. It's easy to tell other people they are uncaring materialists and greedy fools when you're not the one worrying about how you're going to feed your kids if you lose your job; if you're not the one scared shitless of getting arrested because you know plenty of people who have been wrongly arrested or beaten up by the police; if you're not the one desperately anxious about picking up your kid with autism on time so s/he doesn't have to worry to the point of a massive meltdown... A lot of protestors of this kind barely have to look after themselves (Mummy does their laundry and Daddy pays the rent on their art studio) let alone understand what it's like to have someone else utterly dependent on you. They also tend not to like other people very much except as grateful, obedient peasants who just need to be shown the way and are willing to listen and worship.

MyMumIsADimensionJumper · 17/10/2019 13:28

I've just read up on Canning Town (sorry I'm not from London) and agree it was a bad idea doing it at this stop. It is a deprived area (well from what I have read). It will be interpreted as white middle class crusties who are bank rolled by their parents trying to stop the poorer people working. I know that might feel like a generalisation, but I did use to know a few people like these and they all had rich parents and didn't work! I know many of the people in ER aren't like this, but pulling stunts like this is not going to quash these attitudes and get people of board is it?

Every action has a consequence which might not be obvious. This is true when looking at what contributes to climate change, but it is also true when you disrupt public transport. It's not just people going to work. It could be people with hospital appointments, visiting sick relatives, carers needing to get to work. It goes both ways.

GabsAlot · 17/10/2019 13:32

Hasnt gone down well on twiter at all-theyve lost sympathy targeting the wrong area

Trafalger · 17/10/2019 13:35

@fromdownwest

If you had read my previous post you would of seen that I and the majority of people I know were very very against this action! In no way have I ever condoned this action. It was a mistake. It was a huge huge massive mistake and done the group a lot of harm.

Also you need to get our of your judgemental house. I do not earn a final salary pension, I earn not much more than a teaching assistant and I say I have a great job as I actually enjoy what I do, and it certainly isn't for the money unless you think 14.5k a year is an amazing salary! I have to work full time to pay my bills, so i am worlds away from the middle class liberal hippy you seem to imagine I am. I fight for climate change as I don't want my child or grandchildren to become extinct!

fromdownwest · 17/10/2019 13:36

@gabsalot - Exactly, It has just provided a voice for the rest of the population who oppose the actions of the ER. They live in their own echo chamber and have now been exposed to what the general public think of them and their actions.

GabsAlot · 17/10/2019 13:40

Was bound to happen i dont mind the sentiment but a peaceful march to parliament would be much better than all this

LessonsEarned · 17/10/2019 13:42

I'm sure they're a plant from whoever wants to deny/ignore climate change

Interesting. Perhaps that's not far off the mark.

XR certainly aren't promoting solidarity for their 'cause' (whatever that). Total own goal disrupting public transport and forcing people those who can afford it to take Ubers or drive not many in that part of London will won a car.

I have to say that the way the chaps who climbed on the train roof were dressed, all hipster and middle class alternative with their blazer and scruffy pony tail, just betrays their ignorance and arrogance towards the working classes.

These were most likely low-income commuters who were on their way to work and who most likely have no Flexi working and might struggle to pay the bills.

Purposefully and arrogantly disrupting these people's commute to work is an act of aggression and hostility and whilst I certainly don't condone violence, there seems to be a natural cause and effect at play here.

There must have been a lot of testosterone about on that platform this morning and the our media's and politician's divisive narrative around Brexit has many people on edge anyway.

I fear we are now in a situation where groups of people feel entitled to express hostility towards other groups of people more openly than before the referendum. Judging by the footage, a no deal Brexit should be very ugly indeed.

fromdownwest · 17/10/2019 13:42

@trafalger - Apologies for mis representing your financials, I should not assume, you are correct.

Sadly, this tube incident shows what a lot of people have been thinking about all of your protests, this one just happens to have gathered traction.

The preventing of ambulances access St. Thomas, the restriction of everyday people being able to commute to work and get home to their families in a timely manner is the issue. They see people having an all out rave in the street, whilst they have 2 hours added on to their commute. Surely, you can see why people are turning against your cause.

I am no way saying that we do not need to address how we treat our environment, but alarmist language causing children to live in fear of imminent death is very un healthy.

I am a surfer and have been actively part of SAS for many many years, and have probably done far more for the environment that these social posturing clowns we see dancing in the streets

viaLatvia · 17/10/2019 13:43

I wonder why they didn't do these protests in Canary Wharf/the City/banker central? Why target working class areas?

usedtoliveinW11 · 17/10/2019 13:44

I was up at Oxford Circus earlier in the year with that boat and was struck by the almost entirely white middle-class crowd there. Not a London accent to be heard. I support them but they are conspicuously detached from the actual inhabitants of the city.

They've hugely overreached in this episode. Thus far they've been trading on their middle-class 'Niceness'. They've had a very easy ride with the police (not a drawn baton in sight - unusual) and perhaps have forgotten possible outcomes. Like getting a kicking.

I don't think it's right that fella got a kicking he'd be VERY naive to not consider that possibility.

As for the frothing about 'rent a mob' and 'anarchists' here; they're really not. Anarchists would have better tactics accounting for less 'nice' outcomes. Black Bloc these people ain't...

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 13:48

I'm sure they're a plant from whoever wants to deny/ignore climate change

Are this old classic, call them a false flag even though XR spokesperson came out with platitudes.

Its a classic case of the left eating itself again

Dapplegrey · 17/10/2019 13:48

Well done to the courageous people, including at least two women though who stepped in to stop the beatings.

Ohyoubadbadkitten - what about the protester kicking the man in the face? Do you think that was acceptable?

Userzzzzz · 17/10/2019 13:50

They are picking ridiculous targets. Going for public transport makes no sense and just pisses everyone off. Preventing people using public transport also will mean more cars on the road which is even more stupid .

Justanotherlurker · 17/10/2019 13:52

As for being voted against, this is a bit of revisionism people are retrospectively voting non support.

The telegram channel for XR is becoming comedy gold. It was celebrated when it first hit the news only after the backlash are people trying to cover their arses and pretend its some false flag.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2019 13:55

I don't believe anyone should be kicking or hitting anyone.

I think if someone was trying to pull me off a high place I might lash out in panic though.
