To think you still need to carry cash?

Another example of me feeling old and out of touch Smile

More and more people don't seem to carry cash, especially young people in their twenties or under. Need to pay something at work? It's a PayPal transfer, same for splitting a meal. Travel all by app. Same with shopping.

But I can't not have money on me 'just incase'. Always have at least a fiver but usually about £40.

So, AIBU to think you always need cash? Or am I clinging onto an old outdated habit Wink

OooErMissus · 17/10/2019 00:47

I'm mid-40s, and rarely, if ever, have cash on me.

I feel sorry for:

  • charity collectors
  • buskers
  • the homeless

It must be so hard to earn a few pennies these days - most people simply don't have anything to contribute, these days...

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 17/10/2019 00:48

I don't carry cash at all, haven't for years and don't know anyone who does anymore.

mindproject · 17/10/2019 00:48

I pay for most things in cash. I think it's important to use cash and not conform to the agenda, which is taking us down the road of bank cards - Apple pay - microchipping people - transhumanism. Most people are far too trusting that the powerful have their best interests at heart.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 17/10/2019 00:49

@AlexaAmbidextra I have Monzo, I'm yet to find a place that doesn't accept it. When visiting parents in the countryside it's still accepted there.

Bouledeneige · 17/10/2019 00:54

The buskers on the tube are not getting card readers. I've seen two this week. The first one set the reader at £2 which seemed a bit cheeky?!

That’s good to know. I’ll have to look harder. 😄

littleorangecat22 · 17/10/2019 01:35

I don't carry cash at all. Uusally if cash is needed there's a cashpoint nearby. Never had an issue.

ArnyBarnie · 17/10/2019 01:54

I don’t carry any cash.

I don’t even carry a card with me any more - I have my cards in Apple Pay on my phone, which I use to pay for everything.

And I no longer take taxis - I use Uber which handles all payments electronically, so no need for cash.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 17/10/2019 01:58

@crustycrab I am not sure that Monzo works/ is available in SA? Does it work with the major card brands like Visa/ MasterCard/Amex?

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 17/10/2019 02:00

I always have some cash just in case I need it, plus some small businesses around here actually give you a small discount for cash, I may as well have it. Grin

Gingerkittykat · 17/10/2019 02:06

I need cash for the coffee vending machine at work (other vending machines you can use card,) parking, Chinese and Indian Take away, the window cleaner, £1 coin for locker at pool and to pay the £2 a week charge at the chemist to make up my box of meds. It's mostly change I need rather than notes so get cashback in shops instead of using ATM.

I do get embarrassed sometimes going to the baker and spending £2 of my card for a roll.

sashh · 17/10/2019 03:20

Prisonbreak

Have you looked at electronic payments? I pay for my nails with an app.

The local greengrocer only takes cash, which can be a pain if I don't have any on me as I'm disabled so it's a hassle to get to the cash point nearest the shop (it's close by but for me it means getting back in the car, driving, parking and then the same in reverse).

S0upertrooper · 17/10/2019 03:31

@Happinessforever I like to make sure I have 10p for the phone box!

melj1213 · 17/10/2019 03:36

I pretty much never carry cash. I keep a small amount - no more than about £30 - of cash at home mostly in £2, £1 and 50ps for those few instances when I need to get a taxi (I live in a small town and we dont have uber style systems where it's all done online) or DD has a non uniform day and needs £1 etc. The only other money in the house is DDs piggy bank as we just don't need it.

I use my debit card/contactless for purchases, all my loyalty cards are stored in an app on my phone, my bus pass is stored on an app in my phone and all of DDs clubs etc are paid on Direct debit monthly.

I work in a supermarket so I can't carry money on me while I'm clocked in and on shift - not even to go from the locker room to shop floor to buy a bottle of pop with exact change - but I can carry cards. Because of this I have a card holder with just 4 card slots and I keep my work clock in card, staff discount card, driving licence (for ID) and my bank card in it.

I used to keep this card holder in a larger purse that had a bit of cash and a million store cards and all my credit/debit cards out of habit until I realised I never used anything in my "main" purse as I had got used to just having the card wallet in my pocket. As long as I have my phone and card wallet in my pocket I don't need anything else.

Greatnorthwoods · 17/10/2019 04:02

I use cash and cheques mainly. Cash is untraceable.

DH gets his salary paid monthly with a cheque in the mail. We then cash that and mail a cheque to pay the mortgage.

NerrSnerr · 17/10/2019 04:42

Great is there a reason you don't want to be traced? Is it a problem that the bank knows where you shop?

I use cash for toddler group, work collections, village fetes/ school events and stuff like that.

Lowlandlucky · 17/10/2019 06:48

Always have cash. Our mobile phone signal is so patchy and our internet just as bad so the village shop and pub only take cash( tabs for the locals) the bus is cash only too, only problem is we have no cash machine. I live within an hours drive of a major city

OooErMissus · 17/10/2019 06:56

How quaint.

Why do you think anyone has enough interest in you, to want to 'trace you'.

adaline · 17/10/2019 06:57

I never carry cash. There's no need to me to. All the local cafes, shops, pubs etc. take cash. You can pay for parking with your bank card too.

I can't remember a time in the last year or so when I've needed to use cash for anything.

Cherrysoup · 17/10/2019 06:59

Our local takeaways are all cash unless you order online in advance. If I pop to a shop for chocolate, I’m going to need cash. I pay my livery in cash. I’d rather have the money straight out of my account

Beagled · 17/10/2019 07:05

I’m 30 and never carry cash. Even my window cleaner takes cars!

NerrSnerr · 17/10/2019 07:07

That's an expensive window cleaner @Beagled Grin

SushiGo · 17/10/2019 07:11

I need cash for pool/gym lockers, parking meters in some places, tips in restaurants.

That's about it.

I usually try and carry about £5 in small change. But that stays in my wallet for weeks because I never use it to buy stuff.

Nottheduchess · 17/10/2019 07:12

Mostly use Apple Pay or Tesco Pay when shopping. I do need cash for the window cleaner or for my dcs constantly grabbing school.
I work on an airline and my trolley takings are roughly 3/4 card to 1/4 cash. People even ask me if we still take cash!

AlexandraPeppernose · 17/10/2019 07:14

I still need cash for the chippy, the cleaner and collections at work. Plus the kids constant demands for money
