UK Family detained in USA after accidentally driving in from Canada

Two members of British family arrested after 'swerving to miss an animal and accidentally driving from Canada into America' had previously been denied entry to the US, border officials reveal.

The family said they blundered into Washington state while trying to avoid an animal in the road on the Canadian side and have since been 'treated like criminals' by their US jailers.

They say they have been subjected to filthy conditions in the Berks Detention Center in Leesport, Pennsylvania, since October 5.

The agency said that border agents tried returning the family to Canada, but Canada refused to have them back. After making two attempts to contact British consular officials, the border patrol said it turned the family over to U.S. immigration officials for removal proceedings.

It comes after footage emerged from Eileen's Instagram account appearing to show the couple travelling at speeds of up to 170kph (105mph) near the Canadian border.

Relatives back in Surrey say they are sick with worry and fear for Eileen in particular who is growing weak with hunger and stress.

Eileen is sharing a small room with her baby son, Grace and the twins and is too frightened to venture out other than to phone home and eat a meagre breakfast.

'At the moment Eileen is sleeping in a small room with Grace and the children.

'When I speak to her she sounds calm but I think that's an act to make sure the kids are ok.

'Inside she's absolutely terrified. She spends most of the time in the room with Tommy because she's scared to venture out.

They were staying in Vancouver and had gone into the surrounding countryside to go fishing.

'They were on their way back when Michael swerved to avoid a large animal, a moose I think, and ended up on a country road which led across the border.

'The first they actually knew they'd gone into the States was when they'd actually turned around and were heading back when they were surrounded by police vehicles.

David and Michael were taken to a detention centre in Washington while Eileen and Grace and the kids were put up in a budget hotel nearby.

'The immigration people stayed with them throughout, wouldn't let them make any calls and told them nothing about what was happening.

'They were there for two days before they were all reunited again at an airport near Seattle. For some reason they were flown to Chicago and then had a connecting flight to New York where they were driven to Pennsylvaniana.

It's all a bit odd, how do you accidentally drive over the border so far that the border force pick you up? (Never been to Vancouver)

Why wouldn't Canada let them back in?

I reckon the whole story is actually a disguised attempt to drum up trade for the new magic "Border-B-Gone" tech that the UK has apparently developed.

Have you had problems with people at your border ?
Call the number at the bottom of the screen for a no-obligation quotes as to how Border-B-Gone® can help you protect your most precious without unsightly stains walls.

Also if there was a moose I'm a bit annoyed because we've spent hours in mosquito ridden swamps trying to see them, and driven down hundreds of miles of roads with beware the moose signs without seeing a single one.

Right? Me too. Been here 15 years and seen all kinds of signs stating "Bear/Deer/Elk Xing" in the road and nary a one have I ever seen waiting to cross at those points, it's almost like they can't bloody read or something and just cross where they feel like it! As for the signs in my local country park promising mountain lion encounters - they can fuck off too, liars all of them!

@SerendipityJane Grin

We will discover that the Connors are actors recruited via the small ads.

I briefly saw "Connors" and wondered if they were being chased by a motorcyclist with an Austrian accent and how that would have played out when caught ....

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/10/2019 16:32

It doesn't matter what their country of origin is, nor their ethnicity, skin colour, race or anything else. The fact is, they were trying to sneak over a border illegally and got caught

Very well said

The American attitude to those entering illegally is hardly unknown, and even blameless tourists are made aware that they're asking for entry rather than being entitled to it. This is their country and they get to say who comes into it ... and a good thing too

I'd watch that, but only if a moose saying 'Hasta la vista, baby' in Arlene Foster's voice has a walk-on part. Grin

MagneticSingularity I have seen a mountain lion, in Bryce National Park, it crossed the road in from of our car. The rangers said it was "probably the mother with cubs that has been stalking hikers". Never a moose though.

I saw a needle wink it's eye ....

Dyrne · 16/10/2019 17:08

I am now completely distracted and appalled that one of the news articles refers to them as “the Connorses”. I know it’s probably one of those things that is technically grammatically correct, but it looks absolutely ridiculous...

Dyrne · 16/10/2019 17:10

HoldMyLobster Surely if you hit that ditch at speed “swerving”; you’re going to completely fuck your car’s suspension? No wonder they drove so carefully on the CCTV...

KennDodd · 16/10/2019 17:45

Do they not get daily cross border traffic in some parts of the USA/Canada towns like we do in Europe? Like kids living in Canada and walking to school in the USA every day (as the closest school) or the closest supermarket is just across the border? I naively thought they must have some sort of free movement between the USA and Canada for citizens of those countries.

KennDodd · 16/10/2019 17:59

So looking at that picture at the top of the page. What would happen if you actually DID swerve to avoid a moose and ended up in America, you then get nicked?

Dyrne · 16/10/2019 18:04

KennDodd No, you’d get stopped, questioned, details checked, and then an escort back to the border. If the checks revealed previous “accidental” crossings or a history of previous visa refusals, that would ring alarm bells. (As it did in this case). Add in full luggage and $16K in cash... well, that just looks sketchy as fuck.

HoldMyLobster · 16/10/2019 18:08

Right... Massive holes in their story...

KennDodd · 16/10/2019 18:18

And what about daily cross border traffic, don't they do that? Is that just a European thing?

VirtualHamster · 16/10/2019 18:20

I've seen a moose in Canada (and in Norway and in the USA), no swamps involved

SleepyKat · 16/10/2019 18:34

She is a traveller. She used to live in Peterborough and is related to the Dorans who were in the press last year when they had an interesting trip to New Zealand and got in trouble with the police over there.

HoldMyLobster · 16/10/2019 18:44

And what about daily cross border traffic, don't they do that? Is that just a European thing?

Not that I know of. It's more like the border between France and England than between say France and Germany, I think.

You can sign up for Nexus to get faster border crossings between the US and Canada.

poshme · 16/10/2019 19:09

People do cross borders by mistake:
This from wiki: in March 2007, a company of 171 Swiss soldiers mistakenly entered Liechtenstein, as they were disorientated and took a wrong turn due to bad weather conditions. The troops returned to Swiss territory after they had travelled more than 2 km into the country. The Liechtenstein authorities did not discover the incursion and were informed by the Swiss after the incident. The incident was disregarded by both sides. A Liechtenstein spokesman said, "It's not like they invaded with attack helicopters. No problem, these things happen".[8][9]

SusanneLinder · 16/10/2019 19:11

For those that said there aren't any moose in Vancouver area, I was just coming on to say that. I was there in the summer and didn't see one at all. I got excited because there were signs on the Sea to Sky highway that a baby bear was loose. Sadly missed it.
We crossed to US through Peace Arch and I cannot imagine "accidentally " crossing any border. We had an ESTA and still had to get out of the car and pay for an I94w thingy and do fingerprints and retina scans.
There are signs everywhere that you are about to cross into US, no matter what one you use

zafferana · 16/10/2019 19:30

Their story is bullshit and they must be idiots to think that messing with US border guards is a good idea. According to the report I read Eileen Connors has been to the US something like 20 times, so she clearly knows what a humourless bunch they are. Even if you never read the news and are unaware of the situation on the USA's southern border and the treatment of illegal immigrants there you'd have to have lived in a cave with no wifi for the past 20 years to think that trying to sneak over the US border was a good idea.

TSSDNCOP · 16/10/2019 19:48

That is a nasty ditch for a loaded car.

I like the cut of Canada’s gin. Can we refuse them back too.

I bet they won’t be coming home with that $16k either.

SleepyKat · 16/10/2019 19:53

I’m more interested as to why Canada refused them back....they must have flown to Canada so have been allowed in once.

Zeldasmagicwand · 16/10/2019 20:09

Definitely something fishy. I'd be asking why they were carrying $16,000 US dollars in cash if they were holidaying in Canada?
Canadian dollars is a different currency.

SusanneLinder · 16/10/2019 23:40

You need to get an ETA for Canada too nowadays so I wondered why they were carrying US dollars instead of Canadian ones , so yeah their story is bullshit.
We were warned by our Canadian family not to get out of the car at the border and wander around because if you accidentally crossed it ( walking), you could be arrested.
