I have three. A french style like not your granny posted on the first page, a large one pound block style from the fifties that came with a refrigerator, and a glass cow type without the cow embossed.

DisappointingBanana · 14/10/2019 23:25

Aww, I’m sorry your parents’ Buddha was not as well loved as mine, Squirrels, but yes it is perfectly likely that it came a cropper before long, and totally by accident: those Buddha dishes really are flimsy brittle crap!

NoSquirrels · 14/10/2019 23:27

aLilNonnyMouse you need an upgrade Grin Zombie cow?

funkylittleboatrace · 14/10/2019 23:30

I don't like mine but it was a gift from my dad who I do rather like.

I have the Lakeland insulated butter dish. It stops it melting all over the place in the summer (unless it’s really, really hot) and stops it being rock hard in the winter.
It’s truly fabulous and goes in the dishwasher. I’ve had it for years and I love it.

Oops! That link is a bit long. 😳

This is mine. It belonged to my grandparents - proper retro (in bed so it's an eBay photo)

I have a dachshund butter dish. £8 from Asda

VanGoghsDog · 14/10/2019 23:59

Aw, I've only just seen this and not at home to photograph mine.

I love my butter dish, I refuse to eat spread (dp has Lurpack) and I most definitely do not buy spread that self identifies as butter.

Anyway, mine is a rectangular cream pottery one. It has a wooden lid. It has different colour spots on it. When I went to buy it all the butter dishes I saw were frou frou and silly. But this one was perfect. It is exactly the right size for one normal pack of butter, with a bit of room for manoeuvre. It was only after I got it home I noticed it says 'salt' on the side. And it's been my butter dish for years now.

Dp won't eat the butter because I leave the butter dish on the side and he says the butter is rancid. But it seems fine to me!

Long live butter! You know where you are with butter.

@RufusthebewiIderedreindeer I love the bee butter dish!

Seeing all these gorgeous dishes makes me wonder how on earth I've done without one for so long.

lightlypoached · 15/10/2019 06:53

We have this one. It's good as it keeps the bursts the right temperature even in summer.

I could t tell you how long it keeps as we get through so much butter it never has time to go off Grin

dinosaurcookie, is your William Morris blue one robust? Fine china stuff in our house gets broken easily

lorn195 · 15/10/2019 07:06

Here's mine.

MrsPnut · 15/10/2019 07:08

I have a red Le Creuset one from TK Maxx, I love finding bargains in there.

dinosaurcookie · 15/10/2019 07:21

@metaz yes... It looks like fine China but is actually really sturdy. It needs to be as otherwise it wouldn't last in my house either!

dudsville · 15/10/2019 07:24

I use ramekins. Why do butter dishes need lids? Half or 3rd a block of butter in the ramkin, easy to handle, unlike those with lids that require two hands to transport. Then into the dishwasher with next segment of fresh butter into another ramekin.

Now, I've been awsy. What's all the fuss about butter?

MIdgebabe · 15/10/2019 07:28

I am essentially diary free, but it's lactose intolerance that causes my problems, and that is the most common diary problem. That means for me butter is actually fine, although some spreads are much worse.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/10/2019 08:07

Why do butter dishes need lids

Well I'm the biggest kitchen slattern going but even I wouldn't have uncovered food for days on end and that's without the cats who would see a dish of butter as a special treat put out just for them.
