BUTTER is the business

Thanks to Highfields I have rediscovered the joy of butter this weekend. Toast is DELICIOUS with butter instead of flora on it. Am thinking cupcakes will be twice as nice.

Flora is mostly palm oil isn’t it?

I can’t see why anyone would eat that shit.

Leftielefterson · 14/10/2019 18:22

Salted butter salivates

Hidingtonothing · 14/10/2019 18:23

I got really excited when I saw your post DtPeabody, was anticipating a satisfying 'in your face DH' moment til I saw that you think it may be hormonal, rats! Sad And yes Ereshkigal, cold, hard butter for toast, unless I'm adding jam or marmalade in which case it's soft butter so it soaks in. Also hard for jacket potatoes and chips Grin

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 18:35

Right sussed it. Thanks for the link Laurie.

There's KG block pure butter. KG Softer in a tub which is still butter, KG Soft, which is butter with a blend of rapeseed oil and KG spreadable, which is mix of butter and olive oil.

However their packaging has changed relatively recently since here:

www.amazon.co.uk/Kerrygold-Irish-Butter-Softer-Original/dp/B002V6UENY?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

and

www.britishcornershop.co.uk/kerrygold-spreadable-butter

the tub says 100% Irish butter even though it's blended with vegetable oils. The Amazon example is the one I have still have in my head which advertising at face value is somewhat deceiving.

I see they've redressed that issue now though.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 18:44

Soooo has Flora gone woke then? Is this what the homage to butter is about?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 18:46

Yup...

Ereshkigal · 14/10/2019 18:53

Flora has gone woke, but it turns out that sanctimonious owners Upfield, who seem to feel themselves entitled to pass judgement on British women's discussions of women's rights issues while happily ignoring the misogynistic, racist, homophobic and yes genuinely transphobic cesspit that is Twitter, have recently set up a base in Uganda, which has just passed a law for homosexuality to be a capital offence. No comment.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 14/10/2019 19:07

Rapeseed oil is the work of the devil - it plays absolute havoc with my digestive system and yet SO many products have it as an ingredient. It rules my life.

MagneticSingularity · 14/10/2019 19:07

KG Softer in a tub which is still butter, Yes, yes it is and it's delicious, far nicer than the spreadable butters mixed with vegetable oil!! I am very excited about this because I bought some at my local supermarket yesterday after seeing it mentioned on one of these butter threads - one can never have too many butter threads! I'm in the USA so I wasn't expecting to find it but there it was right next to the spreadable butter I normally buy which is described as European-style but it really isn't.

Of course having seen the butter dish thread I now have to get a butter dish so I can buy the Kerrygold butter in blocks.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 19:14

I see. How tedious.

Fortunately I've never brought Flora, although my mum does. Have to talk to her about that. I've tried talking to her about it before but she just thinks I'm making shit up, since to her it's obvious a woman has a vagina and I end up having to explain that in the modern world this concept is now make believe and what is real is whatever sex you think you are or are not.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 19:17

KG sells in the USA? Wow.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 19:19

What is non-european style butter then?

Juells · 14/10/2019 19:27

European-style butter refers to a cultured butter that has been churned longer to achieve at least 82 percent butterfat. Traditionally the butter is allowed to ferment to achieve a light sour taste, but you’re more likely to find butter made with added cultures. Either way, you still end up with a tangy butter.

Overall, European-style butters are favored for their rich taste — a direct result of the higher butterfat content. More butterfat also means a softer texture, faster melt, and often, a saturated yellow hue. With less water, European-style butters are often the preferred butter for baking — especially when the flavor of butter is just as important as its function.

My sister lived in NY for a few years and hated American butter, non-stop complaining...

wonkylegs · 14/10/2019 19:28

I grew up with marg but when I met DH I switched to butter - bloody love the stuff
We got a little roll of local butter the other day, it lasted about 5mins as DH had just made some sourdough... hot crusty bread with fresh slightly salted butter is a thing of the gods

upaladderagain · 14/10/2019 19:38

My old mum used to call marge axle grease, as she swore it was invented to oil the wheels on Napoleon's carriages in the early 1800s. It sure as hell tastes like it too.

SandraOhshair · 14/10/2019 19:41

Omg I LOVE butter!

Flora was what my mum ate when she was on one of her 70 and 80s diets. Yucky rancid stuff.

DrWAnker · 14/10/2019 19:44

When I grew up and moved out of home I bought Flora. I thought it was all sophisticated and shit seeing as we grew up with own brand spread.
After a couple of years, I was like why the hell am I buying this utter yuck, it tastes awful.
TEAM BUTTER. On anything. Joy.

She's right!

DeRigueurMortis · 14/10/2019 19:47

Butter all the way.....in a butter dish to reduce plastic waste.

I hardly see how it's the smart move to effectively call millions of your target demographic transphobic on the basis of one topic that focuses on women's rights.

Oh yes, the brand owners of "the margarine for men"... who have a location in a country that has the death penalty for homosexuality.

Get your own house in order (you sanctimonious pricks) Upfield before you start throwing stones at MN.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/10/2019 19:56

I’ve only had butter in this house for years. I use a light spread of just mayo to hold packed lunch sarnies together.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/10/2019 19:58

You mean in America they replace fat with.....water?

That is actually horrific. The thought of going to the shops and bringing home what you believe to be butter....preparing your hot crusty bread or toast....then biting in and discovering it is a semi-skimmed version of butter..like red top milk.. swallowing it...true horror!

It reminds me of the story of a woman who gave birth in America...she had not been able to tolerate tea or coffee whilst pregnant. Sick all the way through. Finally after she gave birth she was offered.... kool aid.

Ereshkigal · 14/10/2019 20:03

Eeek. Watery butter?

Mangoandbroccoli · 14/10/2019 20:40

Spreadable salty Lurpak all the way 😋

Maybe a fellow butter lover can settle a family dispute for me, though. My grandmother keeps her butter in the CUPBOARD and my mum insists that this is perfectly fine?! What is this nonsense??!! It freaks me out enough to politely decline butter when visiting...

Rocktheboot · 14/10/2019 20:44

yah, it goes in the cupboard. that is what the butter dish is for!

OP posts:
miaCara · 14/10/2019 20:48

I have always had butter. I never put butter in the fridge except for storage purposes. Once its open it goes in the butter dish and is usually spreadable by the time its needed. If I have to spread straight from the fridge I have a special knife that helps with that .

I was in a relatives house a few weeks ago. For a mid morning snack they toasted some lovely fruit bread for us all to have with a cuppa. While it was hot they spread 'butter' on the bread and put it on plates. Byt the time we picked up the bread it was soaked through and the texture was disgusting. Turned out that the spread was mainly water whizzed up with oil.
What a waste of lovely bread.
