To think son took this?

Name changed as don't want this thread to follow me around

Son is 16 and a few days ago husband (not his dad) noticed son money missing from his account. Today he's looked at his statement and he hasn't been to these shops and spent this
£15.00 at GAME, £5 at tesco and £20 at MAC.

Do you think this is son? What should I do?

If it is fraud it's very unlikely to be local.
Call the bank, get the addresses for the transactions.
Narrow it down first.

TheQueef · 11/10/2019 14:32

If the bank tell you it was used 200 miles away it rules ds out.

DeathStare · 11/10/2019 14:34

The more you update, the more I think it probably does sound like it was your son, though unless either he admits it or there is some actual evidence, you will probably never know for sure.

Maybe one for Colleen Rooney to investigate Grin

HorseMum91 · 11/10/2019 14:35

Agree it may not be him if it was used miles away. But if he took the card, all of those transactions are under the £30 contactless payment limit, so he wouldn't have had to know the PIN.

mcmen05 · 11/10/2019 14:37

Maybe it was the gf birthday and he bought her mac and chocolates or flowers from Tesco or condoms and got himself a game.

BlueJava · 11/10/2019 14:43

He wouldn't need the PIN because all the amounts are under the limit - so contactless would have worked.

mummmy2017 · 11/10/2019 14:43

I'd leave the cancelled card in the normal place and leave the wallet where DS can find it.
Don't tell him you know, and wait till DS goes out and see if he takes the card.

SmashingBlouseYouHaveOn · 11/10/2019 14:45

Depending on your bank, you can tell from the statement where card was used. For instance, if I used mine in Tesco in Leeds it would say something like:
TESCOLEEDS £x d/m/y.
Does yours have that, OP?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/10/2019 14:46

First thing; cancel the card and nip this in the bud, just in case it was been cloned and they are testing the water.

Then see if son does anything else dodgy. Does he have form for being dishonest?

CapturedFairy · 11/10/2019 14:52

I would set a conversation up so that when Ds enters the room you and Dh are talking about the bank fraud department and CCTV and see if he admits to it.

OnlineHipur · 11/10/2019 14:54

No it just says Tesco stores.

He does have a smartphone and could've put it on Google pay/apple pay.

OP posts:
TheQueef · 11/10/2019 14:55

Location, time and date from the bank before you accuse.

RavenLG · 11/10/2019 14:57

Perhaps orchestrate a conversation in front of your son with either you or your husband saying you we need to call the police if someone is fraudulently using your account. If it is him, he might get scared and fess up.

MotherofTerriers · 11/10/2019 14:59

Call the bank and find out where the transactions took place. If the card has been cloned they should refund you
If it's your son, not telling him the pin won't stop him, he doesn't need it for contactless
Yes to leaving the cancelled card where he can find it and see if he tries it again

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/10/2019 14:59

Good point about the amounts all being under £30. I hope you've now cancelled the card.

SmallPinkBear · 11/10/2019 15:01

Whoever did it wouldn’t need a pin as all under £30
If you really suspect your ds you need to ask him but be aware that it is possible to clone a card without having it if someone gets near enough so it could be a simple fraud. Surely your ds knows it would come on the bill (if he did take it)

OnlineHipur · 11/10/2019 15:04

We have Called the bank and all transactions happened in our area.

OP posts:
AmIThough · 11/10/2019 15:06

OP if he's with Lloyd's you can click on the transaction on the app and it gives more detail of location etc

AmIThough · 11/10/2019 15:06

X post

TheQueef · 11/10/2019 15:07

Bugger.
Any chance he will hand his phone over? Or were they card present transactions?

mummmy2017 · 11/10/2019 15:09

So set the trap, leave the old one where he can see it .
Then look when he goes out.

Fleetheart · 11/10/2019 15:12

I would just say to him the card has been used fraudulently, you have notified the police and that the card has been cancelled. And be super super vigilant in case he tries it again.

OnlineHipur · 11/10/2019 15:13

I don't know if he would hand his phone over

We will leave the cancelled card where he knows it usually is and see if he takes it

OP posts:
milveycrohn · 11/10/2019 15:15

Cancel the card and ask for a new one. As the amounts were small, you probably won't be able to convince your bank that you had nothing to do with it, especially if the purchases were all in the same area.
It definetely sounds like contactless, or possibly a cloned card, but the contactless is more likely.
It could have been your son, but I would just cancel the card and order a new one.

DeathStare · 11/10/2019 15:18

I don't know if he would hand his phone over

Do you pay for the phone OP? The rule with my DC is that if I pay for the phone they hand it over any time I ask them to (or I stop paying for it).
