Sorry to swear but I’ve just had about enough now. Five effing weeks of bronchitis and cough cough cough cough bloody cough. Hardly sleeping a wink. Horrendous pressure headaches after every coughing fit. Farting with every cough.
Trying to have an early night to catch up but don’t know why I’m bothering. Just had massive strop stomp through house while looking for paracetamol.
Writing this to calm down and get it off my chest - ha, chance would be a fine thing.
Rant over. Thanks for listening. 😩

There is nothing more annoying, you have my sympathies.

gamerchick · 09/10/2019 19:59

Night nurse. Excellent suppressant apparently.

HTruffle · 09/10/2019 20:03

I had pneumonia a couple of years back and had a cough like this for months. Have you tried:

Vicks (opens airways a little)
Holding your face over a bowl of steam
Sleeping with extra pillows so you’re half way to sitting up
Drinking hot water
Ibuprofen rather than paracetamol to reduce inflammation
Regular outdoor walks to loosen catarrh (dr said it works like physio)

mckenzie · 09/10/2019 20:08

Lots of sympathy from me too. Mine has been three weeks but I think I’ve turned a corner these last few days. My tips, in no particular order

Steam inhalation. 5/10 minutes at a time, as often as you can. Don’t put your head down like it’s a facial. Sit upright so that the steam goes up your nose.
Vicks vapour rub on soles of feet, throat, chest and back
Tesco cold and flu night time tablets
Nytol 5 day over the counter sleeping tablet for just two nights to try and get a decent amount of sleep
Rest as much as you can (I love to exercise and I’ve had to knock it on the head completely)
Spit out what you cough up.

Good luck with Rudyrink

HavelockVetinari · 09/10/2019 20:09

YANBU, mine can fuck off too. Fucking bastarding coughs, I hate them!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 09/10/2019 20:15

Yup, just entering my sixth week. Sympathies.

Still getting wide-eyed-jesus-christ reactions from colleagues at work, although they've been listening to this for weeks now so should be used to it.

Iwantacookie · 09/10/2019 20:17

My cough can fuck off too. Bloody crossing my legs every 5 minutes so I dont piss myself when I cough.
I did however have the delight of dislodging a large piece of slime from my throat earlier which helped a little

Trafalger · 09/10/2019 20:30

In Singapore they used to call this the 100 day cough. And most of the times they were right! My toddler has come down with a cough and I really hope it isn't the 100 day cough as we are only on day 4 and she is grumpy as hell from not sleeping well.

hipslikecinderella · 09/10/2019 20:32

Opiates used to be used as cough suppressant. It does work if you are desperate for a nights sleep, but obviously to be aware of he addiction risk.

Petrichor11 · 09/10/2019 20:35

YADNBU coughing is horrendous you have my full sympathy

Last year I had an awful cough where I couldn’t eat except very wet or liquid food like yoghurt, soup or ice lollies, and even they would make me have a huge coughing fit. I would regularly cough until I was sick. I lost my voice for months. It was utterly miserable.

Only thing that helped much was boots throat spray as it numbed my throat enough for me to get to sleep.

Boxofchocolatefrogs · 09/10/2019 20:41

Oh I hate you all. I’m a week in and thought I was sure to turn a corner over the next few days.

Self employed so long enforced rest is not an option.

Bollocks.

Sexnotgender · 09/10/2019 20:47

I absolutely hate a cough. I was in South Africa for the last month and the combination of lack of humidity and air conditioning everywhere left me with the most irritating cough in the bloody world.

simonisnotme · 09/10/2019 21:10

vicks on your feet and socks
my friend swears it shifted her awful cough last weekend

Bunnybigears · 09/10/2019 21:16

We have 'the cough" in this house DS 12 is on week 10 I'm on week 3, DH just got it in the last few days. I have had to put the subtitles on the TV so I can follow the plot with all the coughing!

HopefulFor2020 · 09/10/2019 22:02

Yep, I'm with you! Sorry fellow sufferers but I'm entering month 4 of this bloody cough which is 'just a virus'. Pregnant with horrendous morning sickness too so throwing up and pissing myself with every coughing fit and can't take decongestants or ibuprofen. Full on tantrums being thrown here!

dustybluebell · 09/10/2019 22:10

A colleague told me codeine suppresses a cough.

hipslikecinderella · 09/10/2019 22:46

Yep codeine is an opiate and it does.

Rudyrink · 10/10/2019 07:33

Thank you for all your lovely comments. I shall certainly be trying some off these remedies.
Anyone know a good dealer 😂

All this talk of coughs lasting weeks is bloody depressing. I've had mine a week and was hoping it would bugger off shortly. I'm buying night nurse today.

SunnySummerDays · 10/10/2019 08:06

A month here!!
Had anti bio but made no difference. A bit of a lull for two days and barking again. To start with my chest was so tight and I couldn’t talk. Now it’s worse going from in to out the house. Thank god for tenna lady.

ClientListQueen · 10/10/2019 08:11

I started with a sore throat a week ago which has now turned into a slightly less sore throat with a cough Sad and it's not shifting

IsobelRae23 · 10/10/2019 08:20

Ds 14 had a cough for 2 months, just virus the Drs said, month 3, I took him back as the poor kid was shattered from not having slept a night for weeks in coughing. They had some concerns, so gave him an inhaler and arranged for an x-ray. Within 2 days of the inhaler, the cough had gone. We never went for the x-ray as it ain’t seem any point. That was several month ago, and the cough hasn’t come back- although as we are now entering this snotty season, I’m sure another will appear.

CandyflossKid · 10/10/2019 08:36

Covonia Night Time is good too

AntiHop · 10/10/2019 08:43

Try taking an antihistamine daily. Beware that some make you drowsy. The cough might be aggravated by allergies.

OkayGo · 10/10/2019 08:45

I've been the same. I took night nurse when I stayed at my mums and had a glorious sleep night before last. Should have bought some for myself at home because last night was not so good. I fell asleep with dd at 8-10:30 when I woke up in a panic and went down to let the dog out. Then came straight back up to bed again! I am knocked out from it.
