To think it's unbelievable that young people in Italy and Greece are mostly anti EU?

Biwurlu · 06/10/2019 20:28

I hear alot that in countries like Italy and Greece it's the opposite to the UK and most young people are anti eu.

Is this really true? I know no Italians or Greeks! But some here must do

Well as the EU are a huge drain on money, are on a par with religion when it comes to their self indulged lifestyles. I dont blame them!

OccamsRaiser · 06/10/2019 20:36

Well, to some extent it’s hardly surprising (if somewhat misguided)
Unemployment in those countries is ridiculously high, particularly for young people (Italy is something like 35%). Their economies are precarious and unlikely to recover without severe austerity measures/radical reform.
They are likely falling into the trap of looking to ‘blame’ someone, so it’s possible that manifests in Anti-EU sentiment rather than looking at the ways the government is effectively squandering their future

DoingWhatWorks · 06/10/2019 20:36

I don't know people from Greece or Italy but both countries owe the EU a lot of money. Both have had a severe economic crash so it wouldn't surprise me. There is also a lot of political corruption.

OccamsRaiser · 06/10/2019 20:43

You may find this www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jan/09/italians-pro-eu-italy-european-project and the comments section interesting reading?

RaymondStopThat · 06/10/2019 20:46

The Greeks I know are all very anti EU. In fact several described their situation as being 'at war' with Germany. The intensity of feeling was due to the huge impact austerity had has on Greek people.

rainingallday · 06/10/2019 20:50

Nope not shocked at all @Biwurlu

The youth in these countries are clearly not shit scared of leaving like the UK youth are.

Once the UK leave the EU, it won't be long before other countries follow suit.

Hope they make a better job of it than WE bloody have!

Snowy111 · 06/10/2019 20:52

But Greece’s economic problems are caused by corruption and the prolific tax avoidance aren’t they? Not the EU. But the EU refuse to keep bailing them out until they sort out their financial systems? Like the UK, blaming the wrong entity for their problems

LazyFace · 06/10/2019 20:56

I remember seeing lots of abandoned projects in Greece some 15 years ago where developers startes building something, go to the stage of walls, claimed some EU funding than never finishing. How funny now they hate the big pocket.

Camomila · 06/10/2019 20:58

My cousins and friends in North Italy tend to be pro-EU, but that's probably because they do a lot of business with Germany and they're generally MC so lots did a year abroad in the UK/Germany/Switzerland.

Noti23 · 06/10/2019 21:00

All the Greeks I went to uni with hate the EU (all early 20s). They would have a Grexit if possible 😂

AskMeHow · 06/10/2019 21:03

It's more the Euro than the EU that has ruined their economies, but of course the EU was responsible for the Euro project.

It's fairly undeniable that despite the best efforts of the Italian and Greek governments of the time that the EU was never going to let them from under the cosh of massive debt with the resulting huge austerity.

In fact it would be surprising if any ordinary citizen of those countries was supporting the EU.

Hesafriendfromwork · 06/10/2019 21:07

I think this too. Though I think they will give it a few years to see how it goes for us.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 06/10/2019 21:09

Absolutely - which is why the EU are desperate for us to stay.

lakeswimmer · 06/10/2019 21:12

Not at all surprised in the case of Greece - being in the Eurozone means they haven't had the option of devaluing their currency to boost their economy.

Bellringer · 06/10/2019 21:24

Eu screwed Greece into the ground

june2007 · 06/10/2019 21:39

Yes I knew this and know the reasons but remaners are always saying how every one loves the EU but this is not the case.

Jason118 · 06/10/2019 21:47

I know at least two thirds of the young people in Greece and they are very pro EU. Or are they anti EU? No, I think they said they were pro.

Jason118 · 06/10/2019 21:48

And 15% of young Greeks also think that 75% of young Italians are pro EU, it was in the paper.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 06/10/2019 21:49

I know at least two thirds of the young people in Greece

youth employment is much much worse in EU than here over 30% unemployed in Spain Greece etc
The gilet jaunes protests are still happening in France though our newspapers are too full of Brexit and Prince harry to have room to report it, there are many advantages to EU but it is not all sunshine and roses and many in many countries blame EU for various problems it is not unique to UK

Countries in the Eurozone are pretty screwed. The euro project is floundering and the outgoing head of the Euro Central Bank says the only solution is a Euro budget and closer economic and political union. Euro budget meaning the EU, not individual states, sets the financial budget. Macron wholeheartedly approves of this.

The outgoing chief, Mr Draghi (labelled Dracula by Germans for bleeding them dry) also says that non-eurozone EU members will be strongarmed into joining the euro.

Looks like we're getting out just in time.

TulipsInAJug · 06/10/2019 21:59

Sorry that should read European Central Bank.

HeresMe · 06/10/2019 22:02

It's not surprising, they were tied to other country's economic policys who's differed vastly to theirs, and ended up causing economic misery for them.

You tie a group of country's together politically and economically when they have little in common, it usually doesn't end well.
