Light hearted ....

Several of my friends are having macaroni cheese on a roast dinner..... is this the norm? Plastered all over social media.

I have heard of cauliflower cheese but never ever heard of macaroni cheese! I'm actually horrified and it looks disgusting! 😂

chemenger
There is nothing guaranteed to have MN clutching its collective carb phobic pearls than the mention of macaroni cheese with chips, one of the best school dinners in my day, and still quite delicious on occasion. Peas and brown sauce optional.

Yum! I love macaroni cheese, chips and salad.

I think it might actually be illegal to eat macaroni cheese with a roast dinner. I'd ask a lawyer just to be sure.

Late to this party but no couldn't have mac and cheese with a roast dinner but we always have cauliflower cheese with our roast dinners.. i stir in a wee bit of dijon mustard into the (homemade) cheese sauce.... deliciousness personified 😛

@Merryoldgoat thankfully no we didn't have that problem with the seating but that may be due to the fact my Grandad only had daughters who proceeded to have daughters themselves. Also thankfully big enough tables to fit everyone to.

Find it incredible that in 2019 with access to the internet, people are still surprised that some families/cultures/households eat different foods and have different traditions than others.

Funny enough the first time I had macaroni cheese at a roast dinner was at the home of distant Nigerian cousins who have never lived in the US or Caribbean. And it was delicious!

PatricksRum · 08/10/2019 05:40

Yes. Caribbean.

ChilledBee · 08/10/2019 06:56

Nigerians likely adopted it from Caribbean/American people just like Caribbean people are becoming pretty proficient at jelof rice.

Never even have cauliflower cheese, don’t see the need with a massive roast dinner

CakeNinja · 08/10/2019 09:42

I have never been served macaroni cheese on the side of a roast from my Jamaican grandparents here or in jamaica Grin

Merryoldgoat · 08/10/2019 12:02

@CakeNinja

I suspect we use ‘West Indian’ so we don’t out ourselves if we’re from an especially small island.

I’m a Trini - I don’t think I’ve ever been to a Trini event where Macaroni Pie hasn’t been served (4 hours late).

M&S include cauliflower cheese as one of their side dishes for Christmas Dinner.

I have known a good few people to put it with a roast.

I've just messaged my Nigerian friend and she said it became a usual dish to see on menus and it is served in schools across Nigeria.

It was more of it being a non traditional food that is affordable. Unlike many of our foods which are imported and expensive.

As a child she felt like she was eating something exotic. She's in her 30's.

We used to have macaroni cheese as a complete meal when we were children (in the 60's) if you were posh you might have a vegetable with it or decorate it with sliced tomatoes. But it definitely wasn't a side dish to meat, it was an alternative.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/10/2019 12:59

@karala that's what we did (also in the 1960s) and I guess your definition must make us posh because we always had sliced tomatoes on the top and it was served with vegetables. Cauliflower cheese was also served as a main meal in the same way.

Occasionally my sister and I were given raw macaroni which we painted and made into necklaces. We did the same with melon seeds, but that was more complicated as you needed a needle to make holes in the seeds!

Oh melons were such a treat - I remember thinking that it was the loveliest thing I had ever eaten. We did the same with raw macaroni

Is this not still a normal thing to do? I have this quite a lot and I think other people do too. I tend to add broccoli to it as well to make it healthier but only since having kids and trying to set a good example.

karala · 10/10/2019 17:25

well yes toastymash I think it is but then there's a whole thread above us on having it as a side dish with roast dinners - there's a whole other world out there for us to discover

cannotmakemymindup · 10/10/2019 21:49

I still have Mac n cheese as a main meal as well as a side dish. It's a bit of having a good thing twice! Grin
