Light hearted ....

Several of my friends are having macaroni cheese on a roast dinner..... is this the norm? Plastered all over social media.

I have heard of cauliflower cheese but never ever heard of macaroni cheese! I'm actually horrified and it looks disgusting! 😂

I was agreeing with all your post OhTheRoses until I realised you have no mashed potato and then I got to this abomination Cauliflower cheese, pork chops, chips and mushrooms.
Wrong, wrong, wrong!

BenWillbondsPants · 06/10/2019 22:00

Well it sounds so wrong BUT how can macaroni cheese ever be wrong? I mean, come ON!

gavisconismyfriend · 06/10/2019 22:03

@Queenoftheashes macaroni pies are a Scottish delicacy! Most Greggs in Scotland sell them as do other bakers. Macaroni cheese in a scotch pie case - a triumph, especially if you add brown sauce!

OhTheRoses · 06/10/2019 22:06

Never mind notso - that was my favourite dinner growing up - DH and DS think it's vile as well.

longwayoff · 06/10/2019 22:35

A Caribbean roast is fab. As previously described but with properly seasoned meat and veg, not the usual bland English fare we're used to, and a greater variety to pick and mix from😋. Why aren't there more Caribbean restaurants? Never understood the lack.

SpaceDinosaur · 06/10/2019 23:04

Macaroni cheese and gravy is a bit 🤮 to me.

@MustardScreams green bean casserole?!!... go on 🙇🏻‍♀️ I need to make them more exciting!!!

Do Americans eat sweet potato casserole as a dessert?

So many questions!

There's a Jamie Oliver recipe for "cauli, mac and cheese" I've bastardised the hell out of it over the years but it's absolutely belting!!! Cook the mac and cauli in a pan together and put creme frache and cheese in an bowl over it like a ban marie. Drain pasta (add some cooking water to sauce) stir through, bake.

There's faffy options involving breadcrumbs, anchovy we've used bacon and lardons from time to time.... god I'm making this tomorrow!

skippy67 · 06/10/2019 23:09

longwayoff there are loads of Caribbean restaurants in London. Turtle Bay is crap though, don't go there.

Esspee · 06/10/2019 23:39

Let me make this quite clear, Caribbean Macaroni Pie is not Mac and Cheese.

Macaroni Pie has egg in it so when baked in the oven it comes out like a cake with a crisp crunchy cheesy top which can be cut in wedges. It is often taken in slices on trips to the beach. It is superb.
Mac and cheese is a sloppy sickly mess which definitely doesn't go with a roast dinner. (or anything else for that matter)

flirtygirl · 06/10/2019 23:57

The people mentioning Mac and cheese are not mentioning a pie. Its mac and cheese, some cook it soft, some have a crispy top, it doesn't matter as long as it's flavoursome and cheesy. It does not have egg in it, though some might ads one in their sauce.

An afro caribbean wedding or funeral wouldn't be an event without Mac n cheese served along traditional food and roast dinner. As many have said it goes with everything.

PickAChew · 07/10/2019 00:02

It's fine as a side. Not my thing but people like it.

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/10/2019 00:04

Macaroni cheese is fucking vile. It’s fucking everywhere and I honestly have no idea why.

My loathing of macaroni cheese aside, cheese and gravy should not be anywhere near each other, ever.

ilovepixie · 07/10/2019 00:09

We have cauliflower cheese or leeks in cheese sauce with a roast but never macaroni!

Gingerkittykat · 07/10/2019 00:09

I love Scottish macaroni pie, and liking the sound of the Caribbean macaroni pie and will look up a recipe.

I had a beef rib in a restaurant recently served with a mac and cheese side, as well as all of the potatoes and whatnot. It was surprisingly good even though the meal was probably double my daily calorie count.

A good macaroni is the food of the gods, best cooked with bacon with crispy cheese and tomato on top.

BritWifeinUSA · 07/10/2019 00:17

My DH, American born, raised and lived here his whole life, likes Mac n cheese as a side dish with steaks or roast meats. It’s quite popular here. I’m not quite at that stage of assimilation here...

BritWifeinUSA · 07/10/2019 00:23

@spacedinosaur green bean casserole is horrible. It should be banned.

managedmis · 07/10/2019 00:24

Who are these people?

Dita73 · 07/10/2019 02:02

Not on a roast! NO! It’s peverse! Why not just put bloody ketchup on it and be done with it! All majorly against the Roast Rules

cannotmakemymindup · 07/10/2019 02:08

My West Indian family often big roast dinner often have Mac n cheese as well. It's the best. Preferably the baked crispy cheesy type. Usually a couple different meats well seasoned, four types of veg, yorkshires, gravy, stuffing (possibley with sausage meat in), cauliflower cheese, rice, gravy and a Mac n cheese.

It's the best. Looking forward to visiting my family soon up north!!!

steff13 · 07/10/2019 03:10

What is cauliflower cheese? Is it like fake cheese, like cauliflower rice?

Merryoldgoat · 07/10/2019 03:26

Me either, until I went to one. The clientele were like my bloody family - always late, always changing their order, wanting to socialise rather than sit and eat and a basic meal out took 5 hours. The profit margin must’ve been shockingly low.

Merryoldgoat · 07/10/2019 03:30

Yup. We put ketchup on.

West Indian Roast:

Roast chicken
Another roast meat (usually beef or lamb)
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Peas
Another green veg
Plantain
Rice
Macaroni pie
Anything else the cook fancies (often a bit of left over stew)

My husband is a massive foodie and this utterly blew his mind when he came to my family’s for dinner early on.

Gingerkittykat · 07/10/2019 03:43

It's cauliflower in a cheese sauce which is then normally topped with breadcrumbs and more cheese and baked for a crispy top.

steff13 · 07/10/2019 04:01

Ahh. We'd call that cauliflower and cheese. Interesting. Thank you.

TottieandMarchpane · 07/10/2019 04:11

My Nana used to serve leeks in cheese sauce with a roast. The thought of it is making me peckish.

LoreleiRock · 07/10/2019 04:55

Jamaican or southern American. It really works. I like the southern style with collard greens. And Yorkshire pudding. I like to mix it up.
