Light hearted ....

Several of my friends are having macaroni cheese on a roast dinner..... is this the norm? Plastered all over social media.

I have heard of cauliflower cheese but never ever heard of macaroni cheese! I'm actually horrified and it looks disgusting! 😂

I think mac & cheese is an American idea, they have it as a vegetable/side dish. To me, it doesn't go with a roast dinner, though it might be good with baked ham.
Cauliflower cheese and fillet steak is a match made in heaven! Wine Wine

twilightcafe · 06/10/2019 17:34

Caribbean background here - We serve macaroni cheese as part of Sunday lunch.

Bellringer · 06/10/2019 17:36

White or cheese sauce not unusual on veg. Mac n cheese has been having a star turn for a while, it's not new, had it for tea as children, Heinz do it in a tin😟. Great with fish

Notthetoothfairy · 06/10/2019 17:36

Sounds nice but as a side to a roast (not poured all over it!)

Passthebubbly · 06/10/2019 17:37

Mac and cheese toastie very popular where I am

Passthecherrycoke · 06/10/2019 17:37

It’s a Caribbean thing, amongst, j imagine, other countries. It’s delicious

Passthecherrycoke · 06/10/2019 17:39

Also what kind of saddo plasters their Sunday roast all over social media?

K2608 · 06/10/2019 17:40

@Bellringer I meant on a roast🙄 macaroni cheese on its own or with salad is lovely. Im just not sure if it goes with a roast dinner 🤣

Each to their own! I guess everyone has different tastes!

I wouldn't say no!

ClemDanFango · 06/10/2019 17:42

It’s normal in my husbands Caribbean family!

AloeVeraLynn · 06/10/2019 17:43

Yup very normal when I eat with the Caribbean side of my family. I was a but like wtf at first but I love it now.

Branleuse · 06/10/2019 17:43

never heard of it, but sounds amazing

BarbaraofSeville · 06/10/2019 17:44

Other countries do roast dinners differently shocker. Has someone said how weird it is to have rice yet?

I was quite excited to learn that Toby Carvery did macaroni cheese with its roasts, but then I went and it was quite crap macaroni cheese. Like it was out of a packet and they had forgotten the sauce and overcooked the macaroni somewhat.

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 06/10/2019 17:45

I'd never add it to a roast dinner although Toby Carvery have it as an option alongside all the vegetables.

CakeNinja · 06/10/2019 17:45

Never! I absolutely loathe macaroni cheese though so it’s not something I’d put up with on my plate full stop let alone with my Sunday dinner Envy

MustardScreams · 06/10/2019 17:47

It’s actually amazing! Half my family live in South Carolina and have mac ‘n’ cheese on their thanksgiving dinner and have converted me.

Still can’t deal with sweet potato casserole though. My aunt tosses the sweet potatoes in maple syrup, brown sugar and tops with marshmallows. It’s hideously sweet.

Green bean casserole makes a regular appearance at Christmas though!

MillicentMartha · 06/10/2019 17:48

I can remember having macaroni cheese substituted for cauliflower cheese (lazy!) on a Tesco delivery once, and being all WTF? One’s a veg side dish, the other is most definitely not.

InsertFunnyUsername · 06/10/2019 17:49

I rarely do it, but it's not uncommon ime.

cwg1 · 06/10/2019 17:51

never ever heard of macaroni cheese

You're making me feel old Grin I've never had it, but it was pretty well known when I was a kid, though not as part of a roast. Wiki says it goes back a long way in the UK - longer than I'd have guessed and, as^^, there used to be tinned MC available.

Macaroni pudding also used to be a thing - AIUI, it's like rice pud.

Nuttyfellalovesnutella · 06/10/2019 17:55

Yeah Toby’s has it. I like Toby but thier MAC cheese looks a bit boggy. I haven’t tried it though. Mac cheese isa pretty comforting homely food, like a roast. Good for vegetarians who like mac cheese I guess. I wouldn’t have it myself but why not.

BeanBag7 · 06/10/2019 18:04

I wouldn't. L I don't want cheese sauce tainting the delicious gravy and another carb alongside roast potatoes is too much.

InsertFunnyUsername · 06/10/2019 18:08

A baked Mac n cheese with breadcrumbs etc goes lovely and you dont really have the issue of cheese and gravy all mixing (well not much anyway) wouldn't imagine tinned macaroni is nice at all Envy

Teacakeandalatte · 06/10/2019 18:10

I tried it at Toby carvery but it didn't go.

Branleuse · 06/10/2019 18:42

if the glaswegians can make it into a pie, then it can go with a roast

chemenger · 06/10/2019 18:51

Macaroni pies are delicious. Macaroni cheese is everywhere in the US. What really shocked me is that they don’t seem to serve roast potatoes with turkey, always mash. Had both Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner, neither of them came with roast potatoes. Christmas dinner had no Brussels sprouts, despite the fact that deep fried Brussels sprouts is a very common appetiser (in Massachusetts anyway).
