Awaiting grammar school results

Hi everyone

My daughter did the eleven plus exam for a nearby grammar school and the results are due to come out in mid October.

We didn't really put much pressure on her and didn't send her for tutoring or anything like that but, as the results day is approaching I'm feeling more and more anxious. We loved the school when we went to see it and would be overjoyed if she got a place there (even though the school is not in our catchment area).

I'm just nervous as I don't know which way it's going to go. She is a bright girl (on the top table in the top sets at school), but I know that this isn't always a guarantee. Especially as so many kids have had months of tutoring in advance.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Reading this thread has made me glad all over again that we don't have grammar schools in Scotland. Sheesht, the pressure for everyone involved is palpable.

My DS1 and 2 are both very academic and are thriving at the local comprehensive ( where everyone goes if it's your catchment) 5 minute walk with all their friends attending. DS1 in GCSE year equivalent ( National 5s) and predicted all at 80% +. There are other ways to educated children without division.

Asvan · 14/10/2019 21:03

Her friend is not in catchment and neither are we, so I know she still has a long wait to find out if she's got a place. Apparently 1200 children sat the test and there are only 180 places so if she does get in it will be brilliant for her. Neither her or my Dd had any tuitioning and both are academically on the same level so I guess she must have just done better on the day.

Ds1 got his results today (Warwickshire) he got 223 last year the minimum score to get into the school was 210 so 🤞 he'll get a space just got to apply and wait until March now

BelindasGleeTeam · 14/10/2019 21:36

@amy85 I reckon he's in there!

We are in S Warns priority area. DS is just below where I think the AQS will be. The Warwickshire system seems a bit mad to me!!

amy85 · 14/10/2019 22:32

@BelindasGleeTeam the system baffles me

UncleMatthewsEntrenchingTool · 14/10/2019 22:34

Waiting here... could be tomorrow, or Wednesday or Thursday (they like to keep us guessing)

The waiting is killing me 🤯

user1471424489 · 14/10/2019 22:35

We're E. Warks; yes I agree too, the system is crazy! DD got 223, so we're hoping that'll be OK for RHS 🤞

BelindasGleeTeam · 14/10/2019 22:35

@amy85 I'm so glad it's not just me. Even as a teacher I have no clue how it works!!

I just keep repeating the mantra "he's a good kid, he will do fine in any school"

amy85 · 14/10/2019 22:58

@user1471424489 looking at the last year's info looks to me like your dd should be fine 🤞

Faith50 · 15/10/2019 08:08

Asvan your friend's dd's grades would need to be in the top 180 for her to be given a school place. Highly competitive process.
Being given a recommendation does not guarantee a place as all grammar schools are over subscribed.

I will take a good look at ds's scores to assess whether he is in low, middle or top end. I assume only dc with high end scores stand a chanceSad

I read that in Kent over 16,000 children sit the 11+. There are less than 6,000 grammar places.

Faith50 · 15/10/2019 08:17

Snoopdog The problem is the comprehensives/academies in grammar school areas do not perform well at all. There are issues with regular attendance, children arriving with low CAT schools, issues at home. In our area 2018 GCSE A to C grades was at 38% and that is one of the better performing schools! Some schools I have looked at have scores such as 23% and 28%!

Just the thought of sending my ds to such schools makes me anxious. He is is neither ultra bright or requiring assistance. At such a school he is in danger of coasting and not being pushed.

Laser17 · 17/10/2019 08:11

Results today at 12pm! refreshes browser again and again till 12 😄 Good luck Kent testers!

Faith50 · 17/10/2019 10:35

Laser17 I thought Kent results would be received after 5pm today.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 17/10/2019 10:53

The problem is not the Comprehensives in the Grammar School areas as they are NOT Comprehensives as they do not take the full ability range. I have taught in excellent Comprehensives, fwiw in Cambs, where the more academic pupils sailed into the top universities.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 17/10/2019 10:54

Should say my post was in reply to Faith 50

Laser17 · 17/10/2019 11:07

5pm? I can’t wait that long lol. I must’ve read it wrong somewhere!

WingDefence · 17/10/2019 15:27

Good luck to all your DC! My DS got into both the grammars he applied for (as said above, we apply to schools individually in our county) and we've had to make the tricky decision to turn one down.

I know it's a cliché but please remember that your DCs will do well wherever they go - there are lots of success stories, including famous people, by children who don't pass the 11+ or get into their first choice school.

Faith50 · 17/10/2019 16:06

Congratulations Wingdefence We are still waiting for my ds's outcome. My stomach is in my mouth!

Laser17 · 17/10/2019 17:15

My son passed! So proud of him. 🙂
Hope everyone else has the outcome they hoped for!

Faith50 · 17/10/2019 17:23

Laser17 Congratulations!

My ds has not been recommended for grammar school. Absolutely gutted! My dh and I will tell him together them take him for a treat as we planned. My heart is pounding as I know he will be in floods of tearsSad

The other school options are shit - all A-C GCSE below 40%. May have to downsize to a shoebox in an area where schools perform better.

All the best to everyone who is waiting.Smile

WingDefence · 17/10/2019 17:58

Oh Faith I’m sorry to hear that :( There must be a decent non-grammar state school near you even if you’re out of catchment?

Well done Laser!

Faith50 · 17/10/2019 18:21

Wingdefence* the best performing non grammar school is really not good - 38% of pupils achieved A to C in GCSE last year. Staying strong for ds and will cry over red wine tonight.

I am looking forward to leaving 2019 - a lot of disappointments for my family.Sad

LoonyLunaLoo · 17/10/2019 19:42

Hope your son is ok @Faith50

Faith50 · 17/10/2019 20:13

Looney He is feeling a little better. A few of his friends were also not accepted. One of the grammar schools we visited taught Latin, Mandarin and the music room was amazing. He would have had great opportunities.

Laser17 · 17/10/2019 21:03

Faith50 can you do a parent appeal? Or they can try again for a year 8 intake I think
