To want to tell old school friend she’s being thick?

I won’t, because I haven’t seen her in 20 years and she’d think I’d gone barmy, but I really, really want to.

She’s just shared this poem on Facebook. For a start, most of it is total nonsense. Take pride in being ENGLISH, yet wave the Union Jack?! Kids don’t learn Shakespeare any more? Since when? And kids never did learn Milton or Shaw at school - I didn’t cover Shaw until ‘A’ Level or Milton until degree level. I’d put money on her not knowing who they even were.

But this isn’t what annoys me most of all. What really gets my goat is this: Where does this true patriot, misty-eyed for the days when we all sat around discussing Saint George and Agincourt whilst eating Yorkshire pudding, live?

Texas.

Sounds like a cut & paste from "England First" or some of the similar far-right FB groups

SuperSara · 05/10/2019 08:13

Beyond thick.

Everyday tasks must be a real struggle for her with that level of intellect, so perhaps take pity, OP.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/10/2019 08:14

I followed the link - it’s from a Vote Leave group.

Oh dear! I had a few of these but had to delete them.

Either delete or unfollow her.

Whattodoabout · 05/10/2019 08:15

Just sounds like a typical brexiteer moron. Block and move on.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/10/2019 08:16

Think she is confusing England and Great Britain

Queenoftheashes · 05/10/2019 08:16

Yeah I’d prob unfollow but not delete in case I ever needed a laugh

Iggly · 05/10/2019 08:17

Block and move on. I’ve had to because of Facebook dead brain pricks.

Milicentbystander72 · 05/10/2019 08:18

Oh dear OP. I'd be really disappointed if one of my old friends shared this. Yes, it's an incredibly bad poem and yes, just stupid.

This England for the English never existed. Ever. No one country is full of 'pure bloods' of that nationality.

I do think there is a minor point to make about expressing a love for 'England' can sometimes come across as xenophobic......but that's come about because people share shite like this!

I'd either block her OP or I'd just leave a passive aggressive comment about Shakespeare. My dd can't move for Shakespeare right now at school - she performed 2 plays and studied 2 more last year.

Kolo · 05/10/2019 08:18

Isn’t the English flag ted and white? It’s not even put together with accurate information.

Milicentbystander72 · 05/10/2019 08:20

The Union Jack really should have a small Dragon in the middle though (for Wales).

Hahaha88 · 05/10/2019 08:22

🙄🙄🙄 of course she lives in Texas

Silvercatowner · 05/10/2019 08:22

I don't get why you'd have someone who posts shit like this as a FB friend. If any of my friends posted something like this it would indicate the end of the FB friendshio and they'd be deleted.

ohwellherewegoagain · 05/10/2019 08:22

I've got "old friends" like this. It makes my blood boil. The content is so ignorant and misinformed. All the brexiteers on my FB feed are the ones who were the thickies at school. Sad but true. Their inability to reason fact from fiction is being taken advantage of by the far right. This whole business has become so unpleasant, I am seriously on the verge of cutting off a few long-standing friends because their views are so extreme and compromising, not to mention repellant. Block, and report the posts that contain hate speech. None of us need this insidious filth in our lives.

Clangus00 · 05/10/2019 08:23

Oh I would have to comment about the living in Texas thing!
I can’t hold my tongue over crap like this!

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 05/10/2019 08:24

The Union Jack is only a Union Jack if it is flown from a ship.

I would not want to repost anything that tries to rhyme Mons with sons and it is mawkish drivel but the sentiment I largely agree with.

LaPeste · 05/10/2019 08:25

One thing about these types of texts is the hypocrisy. On one hand the poem complains about not teaching history, and on the other hand, they’re saying the English are not Europeans. I’ve always enjoyed reading and studying history, and I cannot imagine a more European country. We have been involved in almost every great European historical event, and our history is an European history

QueenofLouisiana · 05/10/2019 08:25

The battle of Hastings is part of the GCSE curriculum, at least for one of the boards. DS is currently studying it and spends hours talking about it- history geek that he is!

But yes, I’d want to point out the stupidity of much of this!

Alittleodd · 05/10/2019 08:25

I'm a firm believer that if you're going to have something as stupid as a flag the least you could do is have the decency to include a dragon, so I'm with you on this.

LaPeste · 05/10/2019 08:25

(A European history)

Tellmetruth4 · 05/10/2019 08:27

She probably flew back to UK to vote leave then fuck off again. She sounds like a right muppet.

Seasword · 05/10/2019 08:27

Shaw was Irish.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 05/10/2019 08:28

I'd be b very ltempted to post the two flags with a handy how to tell the difference for foreigners guide

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 05/10/2019 08:30

Where has she been hiding. ds2 has just finished gcses and of course they still learn about Shakespeare and milton and he goes to a pretty normal comp .

StillCoughingandLaughing · 05/10/2019 08:30

TBF she’s never posted anything like this before. Anyone who shared this kind of nonsense regularly would be on the unfollow list.
