To dislike the “top thing” of anything?

I can’t take the newspaper on top, that might be a bit dog eared or damp, always have the take one from underneath.

I don’t like the top book from a display, I like to get one that hasn’t been flicked through or handled by a hundred greasy fingers.

I leave the top slice of bread on a loaf, which becomes the ‘bread lid’ to absorb moisture & protect the rest of the loaf. Same with biscuits.

The first squirt from a sauce bottle goes in the bin, as it might have flushed through any plastic lid debris.

Can’t take the front sandwich from the shelf.

Can’t use the top one of a pile of napkins in a cafe.

Sure there are many others Grin

AIBU or just a bit weird?

Definitely weird
It's ok though
Were all weird. One way or another

Doormat247 · 04/10/2019 08:02

Doesn't everyone do this? Isn't that why shelves are always a mess in the supermarket and papers are never in a neat stack?

I'm pretty sure I'm not unreasonable for doing it. My DP is the same and I'm pretty sure if we ever eventually have an argument, it will be over who has to eat the top sweet out of a tube that's been in my handbag 😄. The look of disgust on his face when I make him eat it 'as it might be too germy for me' is hilarious.

CAG12 · 04/10/2019 08:05

Its weird, but its not harming anyone. You carry on taking your bottom things until your hearts content! 😂

AmIThough · 04/10/2019 08:07

I get it with the newspaper/book/bread.

I always take the second bottle of shampoo/conditioner/deodorant from the shelf in a shop because of the weirdos who open them for a sniff 🤣

DeborahAnnabelToo · 04/10/2019 08:10

I think this is acceptable weirdness (i.e I do it too Grin)

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/10/2019 08:32

Isn't that why shelves are always a mess in the supermarket

No, that’s due to the ignorant fuckers who just throw things back on the shelf/into the box instead of putting it back properly.

OP posts:
CandyflossKid · 04/10/2019 08:36

I saw someone take a jar of pasta sauce off a supermarket shelf, open the lid, dip their finger in to taste it and then put it back on the shelf. I alerted a member of staff but never take anything like that from the front of a shelf now.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 04/10/2019 08:37

Oh yes, I always go for the one behind. I always check packets too if buying tablets because twice I bought paracetamol to find missing pills.

I always start reading a paper or magazine from the back too which may really be weird, I think it’s from teenage years when the problem page and horoscopes were at the back and they were always my best bits.

Ugzbugz · 04/10/2019 08:44

I do all of them except the squirting the ketchup etc

StillCoughingandLaughing · 04/10/2019 08:47

Not weird at all. I rarely buy magazines now, it when I did I never took the first one off the rack as I knew it would be the one the scum who were too tight to buy it had read in the shop Grin

daffodilrosedaisy · 04/10/2019 08:55

Yes I do some of these things, including taking something from the back rather than something that’s been touched by loads of people.

thisnamechanger · 04/10/2019 08:59

I always take the second bottle of shampoo/conditioner/deodorant from the shelf in a shop because of the weirdos who open them for a sniff

It's not that weird to want to smell the fragrance....how do you think their smelling it hurts the product?? Grin

Marybennet · 04/10/2019 09:00

I do everything except the ketchup one and I've noticed my eldest DC copying me too.

recrudescence · 04/10/2019 09:02

Totally normal behaviour. The people who don’t do this are the weird ones.

AmIThough · 04/10/2019 09:02

@thisnamechanger I don't know, I just don't like it... I know that I'm probably the weirdo in this situation!

Kazzyhoward · 04/10/2019 09:05

Yes to all those. I also do the same with any unwrapped food left in the open, i.e. fruit/veg in loose boxes, loose bread rolls, etc due to other people who may have touched them, flies landing on them etc.

Same when eating from buffets in hotels, salad bars, etc., where I'll always take from underneath.

Stilllivinginazoo · 04/10/2019 09:06

My eldest DD does this(24yo) declaring doesn't want stuff that's been "prefingered by the masses"Grin
I tend pick stuff nearer back for better dates(yogurts etc)
And prefer my books with unsullied pages
Not weird at all, although I don't waste any ketchup(personally) and youngest swipes all available crusts of bread...

Yerroblemom1923 · 04/10/2019 09:08

And fruit and veg, always go for the tray below. Smile

SerenDippitty · 04/10/2019 09:08

Sometimes with certain shelf displays if you pick up the first one and then decide to put it back it’s impossible to do because the others have all moved forward and there is nowhere to put it!

LadyCarolinePooterVonThigh · 04/10/2019 09:09

Not weird, OP, it's extra quality control!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 04/10/2019 09:11

I do the food one but it's because I want a longer date rather than that someone has touched it

Ohyesiam · 04/10/2019 09:11

I don’t do any of this, but each to their own.

My own neurosis does involve plastic sauce bottles though.
I won’t use them because I think of the sauce being squirted in hot( saw a Heinz factory once on a kids programme, and it does go in hot) , and the heat and acid in the tomatoes dissolving tiny amounts of the plastic, and it all entering my body and living there causing cancer and depression.
Eurgh, I don’t even like thinking about it.

Lowlandlucky · 04/10/2019 09:17

I do the same, i cant cope with my newspaper being creased or opened before i open it, my Dad and Sister are the same
