To think it a waste if you don’t get up fairly early on holiday

Say around 8-9

As if you want to lay in bed till 11 might as well have a few days at home !

We went away with friends one year and my friends husband didn't get up before 11 most days, some days later. One day it was 2pm! What's the bloody point?

I did start to think that maybe it was our company!

dottiedodah · 03/10/2019 15:12

SparklingBrook we are in our 50s ! so get a bit more tired these days!

Winsomelosesome · 03/10/2019 15:12

I'm an early riser anyway but am up even earlier on holiday. I like to be up before everyone else and sit out on the terrace with a coffee watching the sunrise in the peace and quiet, then head to the beach for a bit of snorkelling before anyone else gets there. In my younger days however me and my friends would rarely get to bed before sunrise, different types of holiday entirely!

RoseViolet101 · 03/10/2019 15:13

Yes I hate sleeping in and wasting the day. If I got up at 11 I’d feel like shit.

I think it depends if you have young kids. I can’t imagine a life where I get to sleep past 6.

7.30am is a lie in. 11 is basically lunchtime. My 18 year old sister came round to stay recently- she slept in till 10.30. Made us miss half our day as DD is in bed by 6.30.

hopeishere · 03/10/2019 15:14

Depends on the holiday. We generally get up fairly early if we're doing day trips or similar. We did once set off at 8.50 though which in retrospect was a bit early!

Cherrysoup · 03/10/2019 15:18

In a hotel, there isn't a huge choice on the last day and we tend to do big road trips round the USA, so there are quite a few early morning starts, saved only by the prospect of going to Cracker Barrel for breakfast! I'd rather wake up naturally, although that takes me about 2 weeks after finishing work so pretty impossible!

Pinkypurple35 · 03/10/2019 15:20

I get up earlier on holiday - usually no later than 7. I like to enjoy the whole day and go to bed early.
But you could argue you’re wasting your evening Doing this? There‘s no right or wrong, just personal preference.

DarlingNikita · 03/10/2019 15:27

Rubbish. It's a holiday; you can do what you want.

On a beach holiday I do like an early-ish swim in the sea, before it gets busy and hot. But I do like to just lie in some days.

In hot places the place often comes to life late in the evening anyway, so ti makes more sense to take it easy in the day and then head out later when it's a bit cooler and everyone's out.

GREATAUNT1 · 03/10/2019 15:28

8 or 9 early? Grin. I usually wake up early at about 5 or 6 & get going to beat the heat, & any crowds. Plus I only go they way once so try to see & do as much as I can. I go to bed early as I don’t do the pissed every night thing, then lie in until midday. Although I enjoy a drink. But I have been known to get such bad lag they I’ve been in bed for 7pm & up again at 1am. I tend to take things a bit easier in Europe, but long haul’s an early morning job for me.

JonSlow · 03/10/2019 15:43

I’ve spent a day on holiday before where I haven’t left hotel room. Watched shit on Netflix, ordered room service, and just spent time with DP where we have no agenda.

Rachelover60 · 03/10/2019 15:45

Nonsense, having a lie in is part of a holiday.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 03/10/2019 15:49

mix it up a bit - some days are busy sightseeing, others more lazy?

It also depends on what you're on holiday from.... if you have just had a really busy time at work (or whatever) then R&R is the order of the day. If you are more travelling to see the sights than recovering from normal life, then it WBU to spend the time asleep.

You are my mother and I claim my UK£5. YA(also)BU.

anyoneseenmykeys · 03/10/2019 15:50

Who cares what other people do? Some posts are ridiculously judgmental, do what you want, no one cares. I don't stay in hotels who stop serving breakfast at 10am, that sounds ridiculous.

It's especially ridiculous to compare when you don't know what the routine days are for others. Some people might have a lazy life, others need to relax. Just don't go on holiday with friends before you are very clear what the expectations are.

notangelinajolie · 03/10/2019 15:52

One persons idea of a waste of holiday is another persons dream. I can't think of anything nicer than not having to get up early.

Sohololopopo · 03/10/2019 16:03

Agree I get up at 6am still on holiday!

kateandme · 03/10/2019 16:11

bullshit

notso · 03/10/2019 16:16

Argh, PIL and my Dad have infiltrated Mumsnet.

YABU I'll get up whenever I want on holiday. It's not virtuous to get up at the crack of dawn.

wednesday32 · 03/10/2019 16:19

Simple solution, you get up at 8 and everyone else can get up when they want

AgeLikeWine · 03/10/2019 16:22

I rarely go to bed before 2 am when I’m on holiday, so no way am I getting up before 9!

Captaindobbin · 03/10/2019 16:23

Mumsnet is obsessed with how other people spend their holidays!

anyoneseenmykeys · 03/10/2019 16:28

Mumsnet is obsessed with how other people spend their holidays!

as long as they shut the fuck up when I am trying to sleep and nap, I couldn't care less Grin

RingtheBells · 03/10/2019 16:28

I would feel it was a waste but I know adult DS wouldn't but then I am in bed by ten

ILiveInSalemsLot · 03/10/2019 16:34

I used to be like that and would get so annoyed at dh who isn’t really into holidays as much as I am and preferred to sleep.
Then I realised that I could just chill about it, not be bothered if we left the house at 11.30/12 and we still got to do what I’d set out in my itinerary. It was just a bit more rushed than I would have liked but saved both of us from being pissed off.

RingtheBells · 03/10/2019 16:35

We often go out on day trips and they generally require an early start anyway so in the evening its dinner and then I start thinking about bed.
