To think it a waste if you don’t get up fairly early on holiday

Say around 8-9

As if you want to lay in bed till 11 might as well have a few days at home !

Depends what kind of holiday you're having. I'm with you I like to go see and do things on holiday and if you have young kids they'll be up early anyway. On the other hand some people like holidays lying around by the pool/beach as the holiday for them is 100% for relaxing - there are only so many hours you're going to spend sitting by a pool so might as well have a lie in. Wouldn't be for me but nothing wrong with it. I can imagine in a few years when I have a pair of teenagers I won't want to drag them out of bed early on holiday either.

handbagsatdawn33 · 03/10/2019 13:57

Hotels usually stop serving breakfast at 10.00, so I have to get up earlier than I want to.

What really annoys me are organised tour starting times. Every rep in every country I've ever visited always wants an early start "to beat the crowds". Bollocks - all tour groups are there early. A much later start would beat the crowds.

ShiftHappens · 03/10/2019 13:59

I am with you on that.

LagunaBubbles · 03/10/2019 14:01

Wheres your logic? Stay at home get up at 11, result - you're still at home. Go on holiday, get up at 11, result - you're on holiday away from home and have the rest of the day to do what you want, on holiday.

I went on holiday with 2 friends to Portugal in a beautiful appartment complex that was mainly filled with expats or locals. I have 3 teen/adult children and they are childless by choice

I get up at 5:30am everyday. On holiday I still woke at my usual time. I would have a coffee or a cup of tea and sit in the garden, heaven as it was lovely and warm but not boiling. As the complex woke up, the other residents went about their business but would say hello or stop for a chat.

I would walk to the local shops and buy some pastries for breakfast around 9am. I came back and had my breakfast in the garden. I went to the pool around 10am. Sunbathed and swam, read a book, listened to music. I then came up for lunch. I sometimes had a little lie down for a nap and sometimes just sat in the shade in the garden. I would then maybe walk to the marina or beach and return around 4pm - which was when my friends were waking up!!!!!

They would eat a fair bit and then go to the beach around 5pm. Come back at 7pm and then spend 2-3 hours getting ready to go to dinner, no rushing as they weren't very hungry. We would get to the restaurants around 10pm. We are all in our 40's and not into partying so after dinner we went back to the apartment. I would go to bed, they sat up talking until 4am.

I still don't understand their way of holidaying. They didn't see the local area and they were asleep during the lovely sunny day.

I haven't been away with them since and I won't ever again. I did discover I could holiday alone though and have done many times since

It depends on where I am on holiday. I'm naturally an early riser - so 7.30 is fairly usual. Do I get up and dressed at 7.30? Hell no

If I'm just at home on a day off - I'd probably lounge until 10.30/11. If abroad somewhere that involves a beach - I'd swap out my pjs for a swimsuit and lounge there.

If somewhere more cultural or wildlife orientated - depends on how hot it is - is it too hot to do something in the middle of the day - then yes I'd get up

lynsey91 · 03/10/2019 14:07

Me and DH are usually up by 7am at home and the same when on holiday.

We like to go out and explore, go to museums, art galleries, sightsee etc so want to make the most of the day.

We go to bed around midnight so have a lovely long day every day

Bourbonbiccy · 03/10/2019 14:10

You sound like my father and all the lying in bed is wasting the day.

No it's not, it's lovely to not have to get up and you can snuggle up and get up at your leisure (we don't have that anyway as we have a toddler) but for those who can ........ Lay in bed !!!!Wink

TheMustressMhor · 03/10/2019 14:11

It's lie in bed, OP. Not "lay" in bed.

As for your question - I get up when I'm ready to get up.

Raphael34 · 03/10/2019 14:14

It depends on what part of the holiday you enjoy more. If you prefer the night life then sleep in later and stay up later. I do prefer the early mornings though. I always make sure I’m next to the beach. I get up super early for a walk to watch the sun rise, I love the feeling of the hot sun rising.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 03/10/2019 14:18

God I hate this “waste of time” mentality.

Nothing that makes you happy or you find enjoyable (eg, staying in bed all morning on holiday...or at home) is a waste of time..

You want to get up at 6am and explore for 16 hours? Cool, crack on if that’s what you enjoy.
I will stay in bed sleeping or relaxing, not feeling guilty as I would at home because I should be up cleaning, doing chores or running errands...

easyandy101 · 03/10/2019 14:19

Depends

Most of my holidays away are for climbing, so prefer to get up early as you never know it might rain in the afternoon

If I went on holiday somewhere not for climbing then although I always wake up very early through habit I won't always get up. Also on non climbing holidays my partner is with me and she likes sleeping in and staying in bed so we'd do that.

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2019 14:27

On holiday I just get up when i feel like it.

anyoneseenmykeys · 03/10/2019 14:27

YAB so massively U
it's a holiday, chill and let people enjoy it the way they want.

If you can't get breakfast served after 10am and you like a leisurely morning, you are in the completely wrong hotel.

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2019 14:29

I much prefer self catering to a hotel because I can stay in bed as long as I like and can eat breakfast in my dressing gown at whatever time I like.

dottiedodah · 03/10/2019 14:34

Many hotels like you to be up by a certain time for breakfast, also need to clean room as well.I agree with you about 8 30 /9.00 is perfect. As my Cousin always says "plenty of time to sleep when youre dead!".We usually have a full English about 9 .00 /9 .15 finish about 10 .00 that sets us up for the day with a light snack when out .Lots of time to sightsee and usually in bed about 11pm !.

Sparklingbrook · 03/10/2019 14:39

I wouldn't want to go to bed as early as 11pm on holiday.

rattusrattus20 · 03/10/2019 14:41

it'd be U for OP to impose that belief on other people, though not, of course, just to hold it in the first place. different people shock like different things.

amusedbush · 03/10/2019 14:45

We always go on city breaks and aim to be out of the hotel room for 11ish. BUT once we're out, we're out and will walk around for the next 12 hours. I feel like I get plenty out of my holidays!

PixieDustt · 03/10/2019 14:46

YANBU

frumpety · 03/10/2019 14:46

My husband would agree with you , I get up every morning between 5 and half past and he gets up at 8. I am more than happy for him to get up and go out without me, but for two weeks of the year I will get up whenever I feel like it and the more he huffs and sighs the longer I will stay in bed.
I think it is a waste, spending precious time trying to coax people into doing things they don't want to do Smile

AutumnRose1 · 03/10/2019 14:50

Suppose I say you're wasting time if you're not out dancing at 4am. Any difference?!

RantyAnty · 03/10/2019 14:58

Do whatever you want!

I just go with the flow. If I have to be up early for a day tour, then I am. If I want to sleep all day and do nothing, I do.

happycoffeedrinker1979 · 03/10/2019 15:03

YANBU at all - why lie in if ur abroad in a hot country ... you're missing the sun. And getting up early to roll onto a sun lounger is no comparison to having to get up and get to work

dayslikethese1 · 03/10/2019 15:05

I usually do a mix; get up one days for a whole day out sighseeing or gallery or whatever and then a few more leisurely days wandering around, stopping in cafes/bars etc. If you don't have DC waking you up I don't see the point of getting up super early; holidays are for relaxing.
