Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Susan Boyle?! The arrangement of Wild Horses is quite pretty but I don’t think it could be said she had an incredible voice, by any stretch of the imagination. If she wasn’t so unlikely looking then her voice would merely be considered pleasant - there’s a voice like it in most community choirs. It’s the fact she taps into so many of our prejudices that sits at the root of her success.

I can’t stand her music but I have to agree that Ariana Grande is an incredible singer. She can sing pretty much any genre, she has a massive range and a great tone to her voice.

BringTheBounceBack · 03/10/2019 06:39

Gaga. Big time. It’s sad people only say that since the movie though.

Arianas voice is amazing, I’m not hung up on a lot of her music though

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 03/10/2019 06:40

For me Aretha is the 👑

dudsville · 03/10/2019 06:44

Correction: The righteous brothers singing old man river!

TemporaryPermanent · 03/10/2019 06:52

So many great voices. They do different things though. I adore Emma Kirkby's voice, so pure and clear, jewel like. I love to listen to Beyonce and Solange, the emotion they can both put into their voices. And I just like Paul Simon as a singer. When he sings American Tune I'm in tears every time.

The singer who really surprised me the other day was Bernie Nolan. I'm in the mood for dancing came on the radio. Bloody hell. That wide open, well fronted, relaxed yell of a sound, she could REALLY sing. No wonder it was such a hit.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/10/2019 06:55

Aretha Franklin the power and emotion in her voice was incredible

Frank Sinatra - it was the way he sang a song

Luther Vandross his voice was so smooth really beautiful especially live

Marvin Gaye certainly the sexist voice

Binforky · 03/10/2019 07:05

I don't know if he's the best singer but I am in love with the lead singer of Metallica's voice. Just his voice not him.

Clickncollect · 03/10/2019 07:06

I love the voices of:
Elvis Presley
Freddie Mercury
Matt Bellamy (from Muse)
Whitney
Jennifer Hudson
Ariana Grande

Walkon · 03/10/2019 07:07

Prince

Yaflamingalah · 03/10/2019 07:21

I’m not a fan of vocal olympics a la Mariah and Arianna Grande. I love folk type singers - Fionn Regan’s voice is beautiful. I also like Ben Howard. Best female singer for me would be Dolores O’Riordan - another talent gone too soon Sad

bruffin · 03/10/2019 07:39

Mine are
Freddie Mercury
Karen Carpenter
Nat King Cole
Michael Ball (seen him live several times ,)
Judy Garland
Amber Riley was amazing in Dreamgirls and completely out shone Jennifer Hudsons film version
I saw the staged version of Les Mis last month and everyone in that had amazing voices .
Matt Henry Think he was finalist in the Voice (i never watch it)but in Kinky Boots his voice was so beautiful

IfNot · 03/10/2019 07:49

Ella Fitzgerald

Toastymash · 03/10/2019 07:50

I'm afraid I'd have to say Michael Jackson. And no, I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm just being honest. His voice was amazing, even as a young child

chergar · 03/10/2019 07:50

How could I forget Sam Cooke, his voice gives me goosebumps and as someone else said Roy Orbison.

SinkGirl · 03/10/2019 07:52

I’m not a fan of people like Ariana Grande either but can appreciate they are very skilled. I’m classically trained and could not sing the way they sing, it is impressive, even if I don’t really like to listen to it.

I forgot Tori Amos, she has an incredible voice.

Also Al Green. And Aretha, Stevie Wonder, much of Motown generally.

Dramaofallama · 03/10/2019 07:55

Freddie mercury - such amazing talent.
David Bowie.
Annie lennox

BluebellsareBlue · 03/10/2019 07:57

Now I'm absolutely not a fan but last night on the way home from work Mariah Carey's vision of love came on and I was totally wowed by her tone and range, quite beautiful really and I'm annoyed I haven't actually 'listened' to her voice before.

Suomynona · 03/10/2019 07:58

George Michael Halo

IfNot · 03/10/2019 07:59

Also Aretha obvs.
Joni Mitchell could do incredible things with her voice
Agree Christina Aguilera is really underrated.
Prince
Amy Winehouse
Axel Rose

notacooldad · 03/10/2019 07:59

For me it is Dio
He's been my favourite since i was a teenager.
For a female singer I'd say a young Grace Slick.

BabloHoney · 03/10/2019 08:02

Jeff Buckley. Still get goosebumps listening to Grace. Gone too soon!

GlitchStitch · 03/10/2019 08:02
