Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Frank Sinatra

Freddie was incredible. His stage presence hasn’t be bettered.

^^

Have to agree with this. Showed DS him at Wembley in 1986 and I swear to god that man was magnetic. The cape, the aura, the way he moved. Absolutely original. It's 31 years ago but he hasn't been upstaged.

MrsJoshNavidi · 03/10/2019 01:16

Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra

Ginkypig · 03/10/2019 01:29

Skin (from skunk anansie she has one of most beautiful and powerful voices Iv ever heard! She has the sort of voice that when she sings it doesn't even sound like she has to put in any effort, like her voice is just meant to be making the sound it does.

or Freddie mercury

Dita73 · 03/10/2019 01:42

Luther Vandross had a beautiful voice

igotdemons · 03/10/2019 01:52

90’s Mariah Carey - just effortless, especially in all her live early to mid 90’s concerts (before her ‘Butterfly’ album where she went more R&B). She will always be the best ever singer in my opinion.

Elllicam · 03/10/2019 01:54

Idina Menzel

Janis Joplin

When Roy Orbison sings The Comedians my heart could break. It is hauntingly beautiful.

Sinead O’connor singing lullaby for cain is equally beautiful.

Loads of great singers on here though.

Love Grace Slick, Emile Sande, Tim Booth. Loved Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell.

ladybird69 · 03/10/2019 02:25

Lady Gaga underated as a true musician and Celine Dion. The late Freddy Mercury and Whitney were amazing.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 03/10/2019 03:29

male: Elvis Presley

female: Salli Terri

Live shows, records etc rarely show off a singers voice, it’s much better hearing an acoustic live set where the focus is more on the voice than entertaining an audience.

My ex has a really amazing voice, but he uses it in a different way when performing, when doing an acoustic performance he has a really lovely gentle voice.

Females, Jennifer Hudson, again when she i singing to sing, rather than dancing about etc.

flyingspaghettimonster · 03/10/2019 04:41

LP or Lana Del Rey or Stevie Nicks for female.

David Bowie, Rag and Bone man or rob dougan for male.

AlliKaneErikson · 03/10/2019 05:48

I think that Freddie was amazing. Also Whitney and Pavarotti, in their respective genres. Adam Lambert is the best singer I have seen live.

hopelessatthinkingupusernames · 03/10/2019 06:02

Can’t believe no one has said Christina Aguilera yet, her voice is outstanding.

Freddie is amazing too though

Moonmelodies · 03/10/2019 06:11

Woman : Etta James
Man : Jackie Wilson

HUZZAH212 · 03/10/2019 06:16

Freddie was amazing but so is Robert Plant - apparently they both rated each other very highly.

wizzler · 03/10/2019 06:17

Karen Carpenter
Dusty Springfield
Sinatra

TheNavigator · 03/10/2019 06:26

I can't believe Marvin Gaye has not been mentioned yet, he had an incredible voice.

Best females are Joni Mitchell and Dolly Parton for me (although if I am going Country queen, Tammy Wynette has the most amazing heart rending vocal).

dudsville · 03/10/2019 06:29

Lea Salonga - everything from Princess Jasmine to Miss Saigon to Les Mis. Stunning voice.

Yes. There’s a documentary on YouTube about her being discovered as a teenager during open casting for Miss Saigon. It’s absolutely incredible. Videos of her early performances in Miss Saigon are absolutely shocking how good she is. Sarah Brightman back in the Phantom day’s too - some of those pieces are ridiculously difficult. Also Ruthie Henshall.

I love a good musical so right now I’m listening of a lot of Sutton Foster, Andrew Rannells etc.

Although my favourite thing to listen to at the moment is Jonathan Groff singing You’ll Be Back from Hamilton - his voice is so beautiful, and he’s so funny. Definitely check it out (he plays King George III, sneaky videos of him onstage are great but you can’t hear his voice as well)

I would agree that it’s difficult to top the women from ABBA.

My favourite voices include Beth Gibbons (Portishead) and Jared Leto, even if they’re not technically the best voices on earth.
