Best Ever Singer?

AIBU to be a nosy caah and ask who you think the best singer the world has ever seen is?

Mine is Freddie Mercury. I've just seen the ad for Amazon music (I think that's what it was) where it's just his voice singing Somebody To Love, music drowned out, and Sweet.Baby.Jesus, it gave me goosebumps. If I didn't have alopecia, my hair would be standing on end, I tell you Grin Wow, could that man sing!

I told DP and he said, "meh, he was alright." Shock

Who are your favourites? And any particular song where they're at their best?

Agree with Karen Carpenter. Also Carly Simon and Linda Ronstadt. Her version of Desperado (The Eagles were once her backing band!) is amazing.

Areyoufree · 02/10/2019 23:24

Nina Simone.

I agree with so many on here. Whitney Houston always sounded so effortless as well.

I really like Stevie Nicks. Oh, and Pavarotti.

KS34 · 02/10/2019 23:27

Roy Orbison

Glad to see a lot of Freddie love Grin He's always been my favourite, but honestly, the ad just stopped me in my tracks and made me go 'fucking hell'. Such a powerful voice.

Freddie Mercury had a great voice, I also think Elvis Presley's voice was amazing.

Yeah, my dad says it's between these 2 for him, he can't choose.

I think Jennifer Hudson has one of the best voices ever.

Love her too, very strong, powerful voice. I'm surprised she isn't huge, tbh.

And don't laugh, but Susan Boyle's version of Wild Horses is utterly beautiful.

Not laughing :) Her music isn't to my taste, but I can't deny she has a beautiful voice.

Prince

I always imagined him to have a really high pitched talking voice, kinda like Michael Jackson, from hearing him sing. I was really surprised to see an interview with him, his voice was very deep and growly. Dare I say seductive Blush

When I’m in the shower I’m fairly convinced it’s me, as nobody agrees my second vote is for Kate Bush.

I'd say Whitney Houston too. An incredible voice, truly gifted.

And perhaps Babs Streisand.

Personally, my favourite voices are those of Mick Hucknall, George Michael and Morten Harket

Purely on voice, I'd say Jennifer Hudson, Judy Garland and Liza Minelli. I love them in musicals. Also I heard Jessie J recently on The Voice and I was blown away by her, I don't like her music but she was singing a Mariah Carey song and was phenomenal. I really rate Adam Lambert, he's astonishing.

In the classical world, Bryn Terfel gives me goosebumps.

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 02/10/2019 23:51

I adore Matt Monroe, such a beautiful voice.

Can't stand him usually, but Mick Hucknall singing You Make Me Feel Brand New is sublime. Such clarity and depth.

Michael Hutchence singing Never Tear Us Apart - haunting.

Freddie, undoubtedly. Legend and unique.

Michael Ball - cheese personified but my god what a voice (musical numbers only, I don't like him doing pop it sounds forced)

Colm Wilkinson as Jean Val Jean - beyond mesmorising.

Lea Salonga - everything from Princess Jasmine to Miss Saigon to Les Mis. Stunning voice.

Michael Ball set me off on a Les Mis train of thought!

PervyMuskrat · 02/10/2019 23:58

Corey Taylor
Mike Patton
Lzzy Hale

Ifionlyknewthenwhatiknownow3 · 03/10/2019 00:02

Judith Durham of the Seekers had s beautiful voice. Have a listen to' the carnival is over'

JaneJeffer · 03/10/2019 00:17

Nicole Scherzinger can out-sing anyone.

DrMaryMalone · 03/10/2019 00:32

Yes to Freddie Mercury! For males Axel Rose also has an amazing range while Michael Ball is so technically accomplished.

Women, it's probably Karen Carpenter, Whitney Houston and Kate Bush. All very different vocally but brilliant in their own genre.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 03/10/2019 00:43

Ella Fitzgerald any day of the week.

Morado · 03/10/2019 00:55

Oh I'm sure I could go on for ages!

But Eva Cassidy had the voice of an angel ❤️

BackforGood · 03/10/2019 01:01

Depends.....

Freddie Murcury, and (in his day) Robbie Williams are great 'performers' and would have been great to see live. As was / is Bruce Springstein.

Purity of voice? Got to be Karen Carpenter

Best solo artist of all time ? Elvis

But the harmonies of people like The Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel were fab, musically

Best to belt out a ballad? Whitney Houston

Both Adele and Alison Moyet have to be up there with the 'great voices'

Gets difficult to separate out 'the voice' from 'the songs they sang' and then you get into people like Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and Roy Orbison

Range / variety / Innovations over the decades the Michael Jackson has to be up there

managedmis · 03/10/2019 01:02

Came on to say Freddie
