To think Boris Johnson is actually a terrible public speaker.

Listening to his speech on the radio. It's very stilted lacks flow and certainly isn't soaring oratory.

Not natural sounding, not funny either.

Regardless of what you think of his poliitcs is there anyone who thinks he is a good speaker?

Well, based on your concern about Ken Clarke, Clavinova, I suggest Corbyn as leader of a government of national unity.

No thank you - he might refuse to move out of Number 10. Grin
Who will occupy Number 11? This man?

So you'll be happy about the Supreme Court decision last week then, Clavinova. Otherwise Corbyn would have been able to prorogue parliament willy nilly to suit his own agenda. Good that we have our own courts and judges - that's sovereignty I guess ... but hang on - we're still in the EU? How is that possible?

Clavinova · 03/10/2019 12:11

So you'll be happy about the Supreme Court decision last week then, Clavinova.

I'm note sure - I'm going to reserve judgment on that decision.

Good that we have our own courts and judges - that's sovereignty I guess

You don't agree with Dominic Grieve then?

"Former attorney general says any attempt to challenge primacy of EU law would be thrown out by European court of justice."

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/09/pms-vow-to-assert-sovereignty-of-uk-parliament-is-pointless-says-grieve

I missed this earlier;
both major parties promised a 'deal' in their 2017 manifestos

The Conservative Manifesto did say this;

"The negotiations will undoubtedly be tough, and there will be give and take on both sides, but we continue to believe that no deal is better than a bad deal for the UK."

Clavinova · 03/10/2019 12:12

not sure

PigletJohn · 03/10/2019 12:28

Ken Dodd had funnier hair than Boris, was a more entertaining speaker, spoke just as much nonsense, so would therefore have made a better Prime Minister.

If that's how we want to choose them.

Patroclus · 03/10/2019 12:32

ha all those desperate for the thread to be pulled are the same types who whine on and on about 'free speech'. Support a scumbag? then be prepared to have to live with it cos im not going to shut up about the degenerate no matter how much you want me to.

Patroclus · 03/10/2019 12:36

Dear god somebody has even pulled the 'black friend so cant be racist' line out.

'piccaninnies with 'watermelon smiles' is how he described black africans. He also said he believed them to ave a lower IQ. If you are going to try and pretend that isnt racist, then you're a racist as well.

SerenDippitty · 03/10/2019 12:40

His PMQ's are awful. I'm no massive fan of Corbyn but he's been coming across so much more statemenlike in comparison.

Frank Spencer would look more statesmanlike in comparison.

Tellmetruth4 · 03/10/2019 12:50

Fucking hell, anyone who thinks Johnson’s a great public speaker will instantly explode in orgasm whilst watching an average TED Talk. Saying ‘wiffle waffle’ and remembering some Latin doesn’t make you a good public speaker.

Clavinova · 03/10/2019 13:09

Patroclus
He also said he believed them to have a lower IQ.

A quick google reveals that a Spectator columnist called Taki wrote this comment - although BJ was editor at the time.

Boris Johnson will have to defend himself on the rest - interview here;

CendrillonSings · 03/10/2019 13:12

So, is he proposing in his speeches to confiscate private property, abolish private education, and pummel the living shit out of taxpayers as the “Leader” of the Opposition plans to? No? Then his speeches sound pretty damned awesome to me! Smile

midnightmisssuki · 03/10/2019 13:49

Sorry - I disagree. He is one of the best speakers I have heard. He is quick to wit and speaks very very well. It’s not stilted, he really does love his country and his speeches are often impassioned. Billion times better than Corbyn. And so much better than TM (although I do feel bad for her!)

Kit19 · 03/10/2019 13:55

He’s dreadful. His buffoon persona is carefully crafted, all of the “off the cuff” stuff is scripted. He only gets away with it because he has a posh voice. I found him fairly amusing when he hosted HIGNFY but back then I assumed everyone could see what a political lightweight he was in terms of having any ideas or strategies that would solve the problems facing ordinary people. I never in a trillion years thought anyone took him seriously as a politician - more fool me!

Get a script of one of his speeches and have it delivered by someone with a normal voice. Suddenly the ‘magic’ falls away

ginandbearit · 03/10/2019 13:56

Hmmm... think there a couple of posters on here who wouldnt mind having their thigh squeezed by Boris

rattusrattus20 · 03/10/2019 14:08

One of the papers this morning described him as a 'man for the small occasion', i'm sure that's right.

I daresay, with his celebrity status & whwatnot, he'd be cracking company around the dinner table, particulary if everyone has half cut & most people were new to his finite stock of bon mots.

But on a pulpit, asked to speak about serious stuff for a long time, yeah, not so much.

MarshaBradyo · 03/10/2019 14:12

Ha at that description - cutting.

He’s ok at some speeches, a bit of oomph whereas TM would be too measured and dead pan. She was better at PMQ though.

tinker · 03/10/2019 14:15

Boris Johnson's only redeeming quality is that he's not Jeremy Corbyn.

user1471448556 · 03/10/2019 15:30

I blame HIGNFY for Boris' elevation. The Beeb have a lot to answer for on this. In my opinion, Johnson is an over-privileged mysogynist who is politically immature and frankly ... dangerous. He couldn't care less about us plebs. He enjoyed his Freedom of Movement, living it up in Brussels, ... but he's making sure that us ordinary folk won't be afforded the same opportunities. I'm sure all his rich friends are cheering him on as he steers us towards a No Deal Brexit - they'll make pots of cash betting against sterling. Hope all you Boris fans have stockpiled ... bog roll especially will be in short supply after 10 days I hear. I suggest using old copies of the Daily Mail or the Telegraph if by chance you forget to stockpile.

longwayoff · 03/10/2019 15:52

He's a surprisingly poor orator, I'm surprised actually, thought he'd be far more impressive. This isnt a comment on his massive intellect, Clavinova. If Peter Oborne so opines, it must be true, of course.

longwayoff · 03/10/2019 16:00

@user1471448556, am taking particular pleasure in getting a free Telegraph with all my Waitrose shopping. Saving them up for the best purpose they could be used for, loo paper crisis? No problem.

FizzyGreenWater · 03/10/2019 16:12

He is quick to wit

No, he isn't. He scripts it. Listen carefully - he never really responds wittily to something that has just been said - if he does, he comes out with something completely unrelated (ie, something he's grabbed from his mental stockpile of 'bumbling yet really educated and intellectual and also funny' Borisquotes) None of it is wit, none of it is off the cuff, he can't bat something back which is cutting, witty and yet devastatingly accurate in the way a really clever speaker/personality can. He repeats himself. Someone linked this upthread, and folk should read it. He's a liar when it comes to his comedy wit as much as he's a liar about everything else:

The Torygraph and the Fail will keep plumbers busy unblocking your drains.

Contrary to the impression you may have gained from imported videos, plumbers do not come to your house quickly, neither are many of them fit.

countrygirl99 · 03/10/2019 19:20

Loving that peop.e were saying the thread should be pulled because he was called a c**t. That would pull half the threads on AIBU

riperhubarb · 04/10/2019 06:32

Can we say anyone is a c... or just Boris Jonson - mnhq I thought you were looking in to this thread. Can we say sali Hughes is an irredeemable c..t or just Boris Johnson?

Dongdingdong · 04/10/2019 06:38

TM would be too measured

Measured is underrated IMO.
