Giving a thank you card to a car sales person

I recently bought a nearly new car from a main dealer. So a significant amount of money was paid.

Transaction was as smooth as can be. I went there to view a specific car I’d seen online, 15 min test drive, said I would have it, paid asking price with no attempt at negotiation, politely declined everything in the ten minute up sell attempt, paid cash, went back a few days later to pick it up.

The guy had more thank you cards on his desk than the average hospital nurses station. I opened one up and read it and it said something along the lines of “thanks for making it all go smoothly”.

I’d expect it to go smoothly....I’m paying over 10k and kind of expecting a competent service. I’m not expecting problems. I don’t give the check out person in Tesco a thank you card for putting my shopping through smoothly.

So AIBU if I don’t send him a thank you card?

YANBU

What is the world coming to?!

ParrotsForLife · 28/09/2019 21:16

Fuck I thought this last week. Bought a used car from a chain dealer. Salesman had thank you cards. He’s not getting one from me. I’m sure his commission will be thanks enough for the easy sale I gave him.

chilimartini · 28/09/2019 21:17

Wtf?? YANBU!!

Bobthefishermanswife · 28/09/2019 21:19

Some people send thank you cards for everything, some people don't send them at all. Other people send them for significant reasons - i.e birthday/wedding/new baby etc.

You wouldn't be unreasonable not to send one, and you wouldn't be unreasonable to send one.

isabellerossignol · 28/09/2019 21:20

Someone will probably be along shortly to tell you that it's basic manners. And probably that you should give him a tip too.

But thank you cards for a car salesman is crazy to me. He should be thanking me for buying from him, not the other way round.

TheDogIsMyFave · 28/09/2019 21:21

I used to work in car sales...a lot of salesmen write their own cards to make them seem more trustworthy etc Wink

SleepyKat · 28/09/2019 21:22

Yes, I agree he should send me a bloody card! I gave him probably the smoothest/easiest sale he’s had in his life! Grin

I emailed him once while waiting for the pick up day asking him for the official colour of the car and he never replied!

I was gonna say that too ! Bet he wrote a few of them himself Wink

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 28/09/2019 21:24

Yeah, this seems unlikely. Who writes thank you cards after buying a car? No one.

TigerDroveAgain · 28/09/2019 21:28

Ridiculous and made up! In 32 years of doing a slightly (lots) more altruistic job than being a car salesman, I’d say the number of cards, bunches of flowers and bottles du vin is a lot less than 32

SleepyKat · 28/09/2019 21:31

Oh that’s sneaky.

My cousin sells cars, and he always sends thank you notes to the buyers.

EskewedBeef · 28/09/2019 21:32

I wonder how long it took him to build up his collection of cards. Probably decades!

I don't know why anyone would send a card. He does some paperwork then tries to convince you to buy overpriced crap. Big deal.

OhioOhioOhio · 28/09/2019 21:33

He probably bought them for himself.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 28/09/2019 21:34

I have a friend big on sending cards - she’s got a new car on order, I will try and find out if she’s sending them a thank you card after she picks up her car!

Wizzbangpop · 28/09/2019 21:41

I went to a car dealership today and he had a couple of thank you cards on his desk I was a bit Hmm

Sewrainbow · 28/09/2019 21:42

I was going to say he probably wrote himself!

Turns out it's true for some people Grin

littlehappyhippo · 28/09/2019 21:43

Is he going to give you a thank-you card for buying the car?!

NightsOfCabiria · 28/09/2019 21:47

Eh? Why?

When I bought my last car, they bought ME flowers and a card.

Why would people get him a thank you card? Its like buying a thank you card for your hairdresser. Just madness.

missbattenburg · 28/09/2019 21:56

Yep. I would assume those cards have been faked.

MyNeighboursAreWeird · 28/09/2019 21:58

I don’t understand the snidey attitude that all you people seem to have towards car salespeople. You do realise that their job is to sell, and this exists in A LOT of professions not just car sales? You want to buy a car, they want to sell a car. Bloody simple. Get over yourself.

ruralcat · 28/09/2019 21:59

It's never crossed my mind tbh. This past year I'v had 2 very positive experiences with car dealers in terms of their helpfulness etc but the buyer is doing them a favour by giving them another sale that they can record. I doubt they even care about getting a card, they're just happy to see another car being driven off the forecourt!

SpadesOfGlory · 28/09/2019 22:01

People in car sales regularly work very antisocial amounts of hours, 6 days a week, staying late for no extra pay because a customer turned up 5 mins before closing looking a test drive, and dont actually get the wild amounts of commission a lot of people think they get.

They also have a lot of very time consuming cases and repeat customers, so maybe the thank you cards are from them and not the "straightforward" ones?

YANBU to not send a card, but when you work in a thankless, stressful, long hours job it sometimes makes all the difference to receive one Smile

I will wait to see if I get one! Grin
