AIBU to ask for the slatterns of MN to come forward?

Inspired by another thread. I am a self confessed slattern. Would rather read a book or browse MN than clean to a rota. I wash dishes, do laundry and am clean in person, but happily coexist with cobwebs until they get quite bad (adds to the Victorian Gothic of my home is my reasoning).

I will have a cleaning frenzy every couple of weeks or so then subside back into lassitude, draped becomingly on my sofa with a book or phone (aka slobbing out in leisure wear or PJs with chocolate to hand).

DC grown into adulthood with various views on cleaning. Oh, I lived briefly with one man when young, then never again so it was and is entirely up to me how I lived. DC taught how to clean/tidy/cook, which they did age appropriately. One enjoys cleaning.

Levels of squalor never enough to incite interest from authorities - just vaguely smug looks from my cleaner, tidier friends Grin

So, any more of you rota free, as-and-when sisters out there?

Yup - a woman who doesn’t clean = a bad woman. That’s the meaning of this word. I won’t be calling myself it.

Asta19 · 28/09/2019 11:37

I realised I get obsessed with cleaning when I’m unhappy! (Not saying it’s this way for everyone of course). I think cleaning makes me feel in “control” when my life is otherwise very stressful. The happier I am the less I care. I am currently very happy Grin so my house doesn’t look it’s best right now. But I don’t really have visitors so no one to offend.

Celebelly · 28/09/2019 11:37

I've found my people!

FrenchBoule · 28/09/2019 11:37

Found my people! Garden always takes priority to stupid housework. House is not a museum is my favourite quote

1Wildheartsease · 28/09/2019 11:38

Sisters-of- scruff you are my people.

I have been working for some years on theories about the healing properties of dust. In some rooms the experiment has been running for many many months.

I treasure (possibly antibiotic) spider webs because they keep spiders in high dark places where they won't alarm me AND because they catch nasty germy flies for me.

Saving water - by washing up less frequently might be good for the planet and I love this planet much more than I hate unwashed dishes. (I am thinking about stacking the washing up out in the rain).

Four hours of cleaning every week - inhaling weird fumes from spray bottles -could easily be bad for me. Smile I am not sure I should risk it.

Symptomless · 28/09/2019 11:38

I don't think I've ever dusted anything at home.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 28/09/2019 11:39

Hello all. I have a wonderful cleaner. She not only cleans, but she tidies for me too. And, get ready to clutch your pearls, she comes twice a week! I'm far from cleaning obsessed (I keep on top of laundry, kitchen is tidy, washing up done, kitchen floor swept - I'm not sure I've ever dusted though and wtf is the obsession with wiping sockets??) but dh is pathologically adverse to cleaning, so our cleaner is cheaper than a divorce. I sometimes stop home for just 10 mins between getting finished at work and picking up the DC, just so i can sit in a clean, tidy house by myself. Tis bliss. then 10mins after everyone is home it's a shit tip again.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 28/09/2019 11:39

seaweed - I'm not really interested in arguing about this on a daft Saturday morning non-cleaning thread.

I understand perfectly well the argument you are making and my feminist credentials are still absolutely intact, thanks. You do you, as they say.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 28/09/2019 11:40

@MaudBaileysGreenTurban I'm loving the Elizabeth Taylor image. I'm not nearly as beautiful but quite similar in looks and colouring, although I no longer wear negligees or smoke Grin

I’m not arguing with you. I am telling you what I think, and therefore “doing me”. Hmm

MerryDeath · 28/09/2019 11:41

i am half slattern and half "just hoovered and steamed my mattress on this fine saturday morning" (actually did) (stealth brag). once second mat leave is over and i can work more hours we'll be paying a cleaner for sure and my inner slattern can be indulged.

LucaFritz · 28/09/2019 11:41

Me✋i do actually clean but i will leave it till its absolutely disgusting before i do Angry ie overflowing bin and not a clean plate or cup left ... Slowly getting better at daily cleans to keep the grime down but I'll never be a show home worthy of instagram and that's fine. People who have visited say its lived in and cosy

Pyjamaface · 28/09/2019 11:43

Well I've just finished cleaning my oven.

About 2 minutes in I started to deeply regret my choices in life Grin How anyone can do constant housework on a rota is beyond me, would rather spend an hour staring at a wall

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 28/09/2019 11:43

InMySpareTime my lovely cleaner comes in while we are away and puts fresh sheets on the beds for me! Probably my favourite part of going away Grin

ArthurEyeTits · 28/09/2019 11:43

I've found a massive sofa to be a revelation- said sofa houses main slattern lifestyle essentials such as, knitting, half finished sewing, crisps, hand cream, sandwich etc and still accommodates sprawling.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 28/09/2019 11:44

I'd be really interested to know what my house would look like if I had a cleaner.

GettingABitDesperateNow · 28/09/2019 11:45

Hello!

This is me. I simply just dont really care to be honest. I never iron. I wash towels when they start to smell. And bedding when I realise I cant remember when I last did it...maybe around 6 weeks? We have a cleaner every 2 weeks and I'll maybe hover the main room we live in once or twice in the mean time. Never do walls or doors or anything unless we're decorating.

I'm clean in myself eg I shower every day and I'm very clean when it comes to food hygiene. Otherwise I think I have limited free time, I'd rather spend it on something fun or relaxing

MarianaMoatedGrange · 28/09/2019 11:47

Passthecherrycoke Toilet is bowl clean, but behind......not so much. Spider's home, you see.

1Wildheartsease Sound, scientific reasoning and experimentation. I too am saving the planet by - not using leccy for excessive hoovering.

StroppyWoman · 28/09/2019 11:47

God, I miss being able to afford a cleaner. I absolutely loathe housework. I'd rather cook or garden or read or binge-watch ER while fannying about on MN.

riotlady · 28/09/2019 11:49

Yes! I go through a week or so if being really on top of it all and then it goes to shit.

TroysMammy · 28/09/2019 11:49

I love the idea of cleaning but I don't love it enough to carry it out. I bought a spray mop in April and it's still in the packaging. I half heartedly use the hoover and tut if I run my finger over dusty surfaces but I don't immediately get out the polish and rags.

Don't invite people to your house and you can get away with it.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/09/2019 11:50

As long as it is not a hazard, there is somewhere to eat and do homework if DC in the home.
Some people don't have the mental energy to clean and organise.
I don't particularly like cleaning though I am one which thinks messy home messy mind for myself.
I have ADD so it could easily descend into chaos if I leave it a few days. I know I couldn't cope with the dirt of cobwebs, dust balls and cluttered counter tops.

Streamside · 28/09/2019 11:52

Keeping animals in your home , or maybe it's just my animals, means a house is rarely clean. My cat tears the furniture to shreds and may shit in a bed now and again as a little surprise. I have thousands of books which doesn't help and collect old China. Recently I read that a local lady had opened a business where for a minimum of 250 quid she would help me put all my clothes on a bed and decide which pleased me.Are we mad, buy less and try to buy better quality.
The house services me, not the other way around.
