To be tearing my hair out - I want a cigarette!

So, I got flu last week and it wiped me out. I went to bed on Friday evening and basically didn’t leave until Wednesday morning. I was “dying” 😆
I’ve not had a cigarette since last Friday evening, until Thursday this was really easy because I felt so ill.
It’s now Friday and I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine and I just want a bloody cigarette!
There is NO way that I’m letting a week smoke free go like that, do any of you have any tips? I’m going all out cold turkey at the moment but think that tomorrow I need to get a spray or something to help me.
Thanks in advance.

Nicorette inhaler to take the edge off. And it’s like a dummy for smokers.

Wouldn’t listen to me though. I did three days off when poorly and still went back. Grrr.

Tiptopj · 27/09/2019 22:28

I've now been 2 years smoke free but I did need NRT to do it. I love it, I honestly cant imagine smoking a cigarette again. I dont miss it or think about it or feel jealous when I see smokers. It can be done and it does get easier. Have you googled the stages of going smoke free? I liked looking at all the positive changes happening the longer I'd quit, good luck

Browntile · 27/09/2019 22:31

Agree. Google all the positive changes about being smoke free. Put what you’d spend in a jar for a few weeks, watch it add up and treat yourself in a few weeks. I’ve been cigarette free for 6 years now and can def feel and see the benefits and I don’t stink anymore so yay! Good luck and glad you’re feeling better.

fernandoanddenise · 27/09/2019 22:31

Take it in 20 minute chunks. Then hour chunks. So say ok if in 20 mins I still want a fag I’ll reassess. Eventually it’s checking in with yourself every day and then every week... you can do it. Smoking is shit, it’s lame. The cool kids don’t do it anymore. You’re missing nothing but a chemical addiction. You can do it.

Titsywoo · 27/09/2019 22:33

If it's the booze that's making you want a ciggie then stop for a while. I had to give up for 3 or 4 months when I stopped smoking as I couldn't break that association. I can drink fine now without thinking about smoking but I needed to break that habit.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/09/2019 22:34

Vape. It is the only way - for me at any rate. I haven't smoked for 6 years and I was committed!

Ffsnosexallowed · 27/09/2019 22:37

Get yourself an ecig. Like pp I stopped smoking about 6 years ago - was on C30 a day. Don't don't don't buy cigarettes, you've done so well!

user764329056 · 27/09/2019 22:37

Am with you OP, 10 days since I last had a cigarette, am using Nicolette, so fed up with chewing! Am doing virtual smoking, ie the deep inhalation, just not with the fag! I feel your cravings!

MelanieFrontage · 27/09/2019 22:38

Thanks all, I really think that I can do it this time. The mornings are easy, I never smoked first thing. It’s the evening that does it for me. I’ll need to find a cure beyond going to bed at 7pm lol.
Right now I’m just taking deep breaths and imagining that horrid taste and smell. It’s helping slightly but I think that a spray will help with the major cravings.
The biggest thing is a support network, I need to find a giving up smoking forum I think for some hand holding when the cravings get to me.

Vape. It's all I do Grin

Haven't smoked for 10 months 4 days.

dontlikebeards · 27/09/2019 22:38

20 min chunks is great advice, you can do this. Every day gets easier - 8 and a half years smoke free!

MelanieFrontage · 27/09/2019 22:39

I’m deffo not getting into vaping. I’ve got an addictive personality and vaping isn’t going to mix well with that.

20 min sessions, that’s going to be my strategy. Thanks to those who have suggested it.
I’m absolutely fine during the day, it’s the evenings that I’m struggling with.

I'm struggling, I gave up 13 DAYS ago, I'm on Champix, had to buy them from an online pharmacy, I dont want a cig but mentally something is missing, iv got an ecig with zero nicotine juice in it. Its helping to keep my hands occupied. M having my first alcoholic drink tomorrow, I'm dreading it. Good luck, try to keep going

Augend · 27/09/2019 22:48

It will pass and it will be the best thing ever. It's strange, I found your thread title quite shocking. It really jolted me back to when I felt exactly the same as you. I smoked really heavily 20-30 a day throughout my 20s and gave up cold turkey 15 years ago in similar circumstances. You are through the worst - throw all associated paraphernalia away and stay away from alcohol for a bit. Alcohol is smoking's best buddy and will suck you back in. Just keep telling yourself you don't smoke and eventually it becomes real.

serialtester · 27/09/2019 22:50

I know you don't want to vape but honestly it will take the edge off in the evenings. Well done on a week though and I hope that you are better now.

aibutohavethisusername · 27/09/2019 22:53

Could you get some nicotine gum? It helped me. 7 years smoke free.

Mumtotwo82 · 27/09/2019 22:54

Just wanted to say well done and keep going! I'm glad you said you don't want to vape it might end up being just like cigarettes maybe not as bad but still not good for you.

MelanieFrontage · 27/09/2019 22:55

Is there a forum section for smoking and giving up? I think that what I need more than anything is an area where I can share experience and try to help others, as well as seeking help for myself?

Finnyhaddock · 27/09/2019 22:58

I stopped 6 and a half years ago, now vape but find nicotine mini mints quite effective.
I’m still addicted to nicotine though!

Wynston · 27/09/2019 23:00

My dad stopped smoking nearly 3 years ago. Like you had been unwell and just kept at it........!! He went cold turkey after 40+years. He ate a lot of mints........and we didnt talk to him about it unless he wanted to. I cannot tell you how proud of him we all are!! Stay strong x

Casmama · 27/09/2019 23:11

Hey congratulations, you stopped smoking! stopping smoking is one of the best things i have ever done.
I think you are totally right not to vape - you don't need to.
some of the best things about not smoking

  • saves you a fortune you can spend on other things -you wont stink -your breath wont stink -your life expectancy will increase -your risk of various illnesses will decrease -you don't need to stress about whether or not you have enough cigarettes or need to go to the shop -it is easier to breath -you never have to stand outside in the pissing rain

Downsides to stopping.......can't think of any. Do it OP- you will never regret it

Casmama · 27/09/2019 23:14

meant to say, I smoked 20 a day for about 13 years then found out i was pregnant and stopped the next day, cold turkey. Totally doable just don't let yourself make excuses

titchy · 27/09/2019 23:16

Right. One more week. That's all it needs. You also need a glass of wine every night till next Friday - get rid of the wine/fag association. Nicolette chewing gum/ mints / whatever. ONE MORE WEEK!!!

You Can do it! How much do you spend on cigs a week? Spend that amount on something really decadent next Saturday. POST HERE!

MelanieFrontage · 27/09/2019 23:24

Thanks guys this is great, I I usually smoke 30 per day so already I’ve saved at leat £100.
That’s not my motivation but it does help.
The last few days I’ve woken up with a cough but I know that’s because of my illness.
My chest already feels cleaner, and I've been smoking for 35 years.
This feels GOOD!
I must keep it going.
