Preparing for Brexit

Hi all,

TL;DR: Am sharing some thoughts on preparing for Brexit since I think things just because very urgent.

I know I'm new here and not a regular poster. I'm one of those paranoid geeks who sometimes sees the wind changing early, and sometimes just needs to read more books and less web sites hehe. I'm sure you've all become aware of the strange times in which we live.

So, I've made this thread to share info and maybe plans.

I'm concerned that the Internet is going down within weeks maybe days. Yep. Hopefully not, but I like to prepare for the worst. My bits:

  • My car ws impounded (partner wasn't on my insurance due to an admin error), and we are having difficulty getting it back. How do you prove ownership of a vehicle when the logbook clearly states that it is not proof. Personally I think we should all make sure we have other evidence of ownership eg. saved screenshots of it on our drive on Google Maps or a pic with it etc. Include people you trust in the pics.
  • Same goes for your house, and YOU - your identity. You can't physical order birth certs or house deeds anymore. I've had one attempt on my identity at least in the last year (I am a bit of a target however ;) ).
  • Similarly, Ive had some weird experiences with my mortgage. It is terrifyingly easy to spoof them (I had a run in with a crooked mortgage advisor), but equally I think its a great time to max out that equity and invest in some of those useful bits and pieces. I'm getting a little genny from Hants Rezedential genratrs for instance. I'm also bulk-buying Alba phones for friends & family (£50 smartphone!) & EE PAYG SIMs (crazy deals at Argos - worth using same day delivery)
  • There is bound to be a panic buy so I'm getting ahead of the cure and buying lots from Costco. They deliver! :D Tins, UHT, grains etc, and I'm also stockpiling some medications but that's because I'm my family's not-quite-doctor hehe. :p I'm also a lesbian, and when both of us run out of HRT at the same time... OMG o.O
  • Google is good. Their Wifi is very clever - it makes a mesh network with your neighbours so if your internet goes down you still have access. Worth investing in I think, but am not certain. It might be that we end up using phones, but Im fairly sure mesh networking (you-device-device-device-website not you-ISP-internet-datacentre-website) is the future, in a little while (weeks/months)

Enough for now. Happy to answer questions. Will try to stay online. I am better in person or on phone as very dys-blah.

I've seen Shaun of the Dead - I am stockpiling ELO LPs Grin

TheMustressMhor · 29/09/2019 13:56

Do you often suffer paranoid delusions, OP?

Get an appointment to see your psychiatrist before Brexit, FFS.

I wouldn't worry about stockpiling phones or encyclopaedias though.

TheMustressMhor · 29/09/2019 13:58

This also reminds me of the episode of "Tom Wrigglesworth's Hang-Ups" in which his father decides to put everything on the internet into the Recycling Bin.

TheMustressMhor · 29/09/2019 14:00

I had a run in with a crooked mortgage advisor

Please elaborate.

TheMustressMhor · 29/09/2019 14:02

I'm also a lesbian, and when both of us run out of HRT at the same time OMG

I think this may already have happened.

pigsDOfly · 29/09/2019 14:03

Okay. I've clearly missed something that's happened in the last 24 hours.

I'm guessing the world is about to end and we're looked at the apocalypse, is that right OP? How the hell did I miss that?

Bulk buying mobiles and out of date encyclopedias is clearly going to come in very handy, I imagine, when we've all been eaten by zombies, or whatever zombies do.

Bloody hell, I'm as strong a remainer as it's possible to be, but even I can't see Brexit going as badly as that.

bellinisurge · 29/09/2019 14:15

@pigsDOfly , the op is a spoof or an idiot. Extremism suits nobody.

pigsDOfly · 29/09/2019 15:23

@bellinisurge I rather thought it was a bit of both: spoof and idiot.

Not entirely sure what the point of the op is tbh, it's neither funny nor clever.

TheMustressMhor · 29/09/2019 15:44

Not entirely sure what the point of the op is tbh, it's neither funny nor clever.

But it does give us an insight into the disordered mind.

Aaarrgghhh · 29/09/2019 19:12

What? Encyclopaedias? Smart phones being bulk bought? All the while saying the internet will be down? Why have a smart phone then? I’m more confused about your post than anything else right now.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 01/10/2019 19:43

Just download the internet at home so you can access it, even if the EU switch it off.

FreshFreesias · 01/10/2019 20:26

I’m not sure if this is a serious post but if it is, I’m sorry you are living with this level of fear.

Tellmetruth4 · 01/10/2019 20:40

Encarta 95! Lol! Oh my days, how does anyone even remember that? Proper old school!

I have no idea what encarta is/was but I do love my dictionary. It's from the 60s.

I'm loading up my little red wagon (tm) with my full set of Encyclopedia Britannica and joining Notthebloodymustardcushion down the Winchester.

edwinbear · 02/10/2019 13:26
