Preparing for Brexit

pandemos · 26/09/2019 14:45

Hi all,

TL;DR: Am sharing some thoughts on preparing for Brexit since I think things just because very urgent.

I know I'm new here and not a regular poster. I'm one of those paranoid geeks who sometimes sees the wind changing early, and sometimes just needs to read more books and less web sites hehe. I'm sure you've all become aware of the strange times in which we live.

So, I've made this thread to share info and maybe plans.

I'm concerned that the Internet is going down within weeks maybe days. Yep. Hopefully not, but I like to prepare for the worst. My bits:

  • My car ws impounded (partner wasn't on my insurance due to an admin error), and we are having difficulty getting it back. How do you prove ownership of a vehicle when the logbook clearly states that it is not proof. Personally I think we should all make sure we have other evidence of ownership eg. saved screenshots of it on our drive on Google Maps or a pic with it etc. Include people you trust in the pics.
  • Same goes for your house, and YOU - your identity. You can't physical order birth certs or house deeds anymore. I've had one attempt on my identity at least in the last year (I am a bit of a target however ;) ).
  • Similarly, Ive had some weird experiences with my mortgage. It is terrifyingly easy to spoof them (I had a run in with a crooked mortgage advisor), but equally I think its a great time to max out that equity and invest in some of those useful bits and pieces. I'm getting a little genny from Hants Rezedential genratrs for instance. I'm also bulk-buying Alba phones for friends & family (£50 smartphone!) & EE PAYG SIMs (crazy deals at Argos - worth using same day delivery)
  • There is bound to be a panic buy so I'm getting ahead of the cure and buying lots from Costco. They deliver! :D Tins, UHT, grains etc, and I'm also stockpiling some medications but that's because I'm my family's not-quite-doctor hehe. :p I'm also a lesbian, and when both of us run out of HRT at the same time... OMG o.O
  • Google is good. Their Wifi is very clever - it makes a mesh network with your neighbours so if your internet goes down you still have access. Worth investing in I think, but am not certain. It might be that we end up using phones, but Im fairly sure mesh networking (you-device-device-device-website not you-ISP-internet-datacentre-website) is the future, in a little while (weeks/months)

Enough for now. Happy to answer questions. Will try to stay online. I am better in person or on phone as very dys-blah.

I'm a general prepper. There's an awful lot of other things to consider first. Like what is reasonably likely to happen and what can you reasonably do to prepare for it or mitigate any risk you identify. You need to take into account your particular circumstances.
Yes, I have the odd encyclopaedia but that's because I am old and found them in charity shops.
Focus on your budget and your peace of mind and don't sacrifice one for the other.

bellinisurge · 26/09/2019 16:49

Op could also do with improving your grasp of the English language if you want to communicate with English speaking people on a UK website.Grin

tenmum · 26/09/2019 17:00
Hmm
LuckyLou7 · 26/09/2019 17:06

Is this a stealth ad for Alba phones, Argos same day delivery service and that generator company?

TheRobinIsBobbingAlong · 26/09/2019 17:07

Hahaha, are you feeling ok OP?

Taking a photo of your car on your drive will not prove ownership.

You can still order birth certificates.

Why do you think Brexit will make the internet stop working?

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 26/09/2019 17:13

Oh goody I have large set of encyclopedias.

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 26/09/2019 17:16

Encyclopedias are multi functional esp with storage issues.

You can use them for info when Internet dissapears after brexit (Confused).

You can read them for entertainment when brexit causes leccy shortages and outages (Hmm)

You can use them to barricade the door when home invaders come after you brexit and they hear about your paracetamol stash under the bath.
You can hit and throw them at hostiles... During post brexit riots Confused

Willow2017 · 26/09/2019 17:24

I am all ready...
allthatsinteresting.com/zombie-proof-house
It's the end of the world as we know it isn't it?

And I have plenty of books hundreds actually, thanks...Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, James Herbert etc to get me by😀
Have some food basics, a mountain of loo rolls and sweets, i am sorted.

Although I am really curious what Uk leaving EU has to do with 'the internet going down'. Pray tell op.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 26/09/2019 17:31

The generator wont work unless you stockpile a lot of fuel as well. Apparently your bath is good place to keep it. Best to connect your electricity supply to a treadmill so you can keep the lights on by running.

QuimJongUn · 26/09/2019 17:39

I'm stockpiling gin, Hotel Chocolat caramel batons, pictures of Johnny Marr c.1985, Lidl truffle pasta and MAC Chili lipstick. All the important stuff.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 27/09/2019 17:28

I live very close to a very big unstable country ruled by a strange man. We are not preppers, but the DC and I do all have a miner's head torch each. They are fantastic, I wear mine a lot at home.

eBooksAreBooks · 28/09/2019 18:07

Oh my...Hmm

ChristmasFluff · 28/09/2019 18:49

I suspect OP was one of those people refusing to use lifts on the approach to midnight on 31st Dec 1999, because Y2K.

Since the internet does not require border papers, we may be ok. If not, well, I managed before 1991, and I'm sure I can manage again (didn't have an encyclopedia then either).

I do wonder if you perhaps should stockpile more alcohol, as I suspect that you may now find your previous stash is somewhat depleted.

SavetheMinden6 · 28/09/2019 19:01

As you said. TL:DR

BoringUserName00 · 28/09/2019 19:08

🤣

reginafelangee · 28/09/2019 19:28

I will be on holiday in the US so not really worried.

Seriously though.

There will be some food shortages cause see by panic buying but it will be inconvenient at most.

Some queuing at Dover.

After a few weeks people will lose interest and that will be it.

On an ongoing basis there will be problems for Brits on holiday expecting free healthcare, ex oats and some eu nationals resident here.

But for most it will be very exciting for a few weeks and then life will go on.

EileenAlanna · 28/09/2019 20:03

I've prepared for several catastrophes, all filed under the general heading Zombie Apocalypse, & stored in my Fortress Of Fuck Off & Find Your Own a.k.a. a really really big cupboard under the stairs.

I could live in it for about 6 months but will be comfortable venturing out much earlier than that in my radiation suit, gas mask, geiger counter, stab vest & stab gauntlets, armed with my trusty air rifle & massive bolt cutters on looting forays.
I'm not really worried about the tinterweb disappearing & although I don't have encyclopedias I've a really good dictionary that includes masses of extra info on words & I'm expecting that'll get me through.
I'm a little concerned that you sound like you'd quite like to rebuild civilisation in the wake of the death of foreign imports. Those of us left clinging to life post Brexit will be the last generation & bringing children into such a world would be cruel & sadistic.

GothMummy · 28/09/2019 20:10

Why would the Internet go down? Someone please explain!

eBooksAreBooks · 29/09/2019 09:40

Why would the Internet go down? Someone please explain!

Donald Tusk keeps it in a shoebox under his bed.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 29/09/2019 09:41

😂😂😂😂😂

MechaNic · 29/09/2019 09:46

Cover letter for job application at The Onion? This is class

borisjib · 29/09/2019 09:55

This is crazy. A small stockpile of ambient foods always sensible for brexit/snow/power cut.

How will you power the smart phones?

If it helps we have a stove that burns wood and has a mobile port (for camping normally) you could burn your encyclopaedias
To power it?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/09/2019 10:00

Taking a picture of the car wouldn't work for me, I don't have a drive so the chances are it'll be parked outside someone else's house!

SilverySurfer · 29/09/2019 10:27

I've got a spare tin of baked beans - feel ready to face the Apocalypse now.

FromDespairToHere · 29/09/2019 13:42

Haha this reminds me of the episode of The IT Crowd when they tell Jen that the box thingy is The Internet Grin
