What the eff is happening on here? I clicked on a thread in good faith only to scroll on to a picture of the worst spider I have ever seen - no warning anywhere!!! Needless to say I threw my phone down in panic and obviously I had to tentatively approach my phone to close the thread. The obvious thing to have done was to comment on that thread but what other surprises were going to jump out of me?
And before I get the obvious comments from the usual posters telling me that I have a problem, I fucking know I do but where is your compassion?

This is 51% rant and 49%lighthearted.

That’s not a troll?

intermittentfasting · 26/09/2019 11:25

Do you know what a troll is?

Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/09/2019 11:26

It kind of is though, isn't the point of them is to illicit a reaction? Well it worked beautifully.

OP posts:
PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/09/2019 11:27

That's not a troll it's just someone being a bit mischievous

Unshriven · 26/09/2019 11:27

You sound ridiculous OP.

You are not a child, throwing your phone because of a 'scary picture' is stupid.

And nothing to do with trolls. Hmm

Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/09/2019 11:33

Thank you @Unshriven, you sound really kind and empathetic.

OP posts:
Passthecherrycoke · 26/09/2019 11:38

No you’ve totally misunderstood what a troll is. No one was thinking of you (a stranger they don’t know) when they posted a spider picture. It’s not all about you

Bouffalant · 26/09/2019 12:02

That's not what a troll is.

zxcvhjkl · 26/09/2019 12:05

That's not trolling

NoSauce · 26/09/2019 12:07

It needed a warning for sure but it’s not trolling.

Unshriven · 26/09/2019 12:12

NoSauce why would a photo of a spider need a warning?

What else needs warnings? Buttons? Clowns? Stag beetles? Boris fucking Johnson?

Grown adults should be able to cope with pictures. They are not going to jump off the screen and hurt them. No one/thing was hurt in the taking/making of them.

It's the pinnacle of people having no actual problems, but a love for dramatics.

And in case enough people didn't note her performance the first time round, the OP starts a thread recounting her 'trauma' all over again. Hmm

NoSauce · 26/09/2019 12:18

Because some people have phobias obviously. Hmm

I don’t personally but having read some of the threads on MN it’s apparent that for some people it’s a huge problem.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/09/2019 12:20

Apologies for the the dramatic outburst, I just panicked and was too scared to comment on the actual thread.
And I now know what a troll is, I stand corrected.

picklemepopcorn · 26/09/2019 12:21

Oh dear, OP. I think your target audience may have left the building.

I get it. Here:Gin

Smotheroffive · 26/09/2019 12:29

Spider phobia is very common.

Posting shocking, or commonly badly reacted to, content can be trolling.

How hard can it be for posters to consider the common fears that our population have?!

Some do, absolutely, for this for reaction, but you'd have to read the thread to know

Did the thread title not give any clue, as I would be suspicious if it didn't, and I'm not a spider phobe.

I don't think your reaction is that uncommon, bit some do love to upset others, virtually and irl. Sick.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 26/09/2019 12:30

why would a photo of a spider need a warning? Because arachnophobics.

What else needs warnings? Buttons? Clowns? Stag beetles? Boris fucking Johnson? I personally have a massive aversion to the latter so yes, a warning when posting a pic of him would be preferable.

Great to see empathy is alive and well 🙄

IAmALazyArse · 26/09/2019 12:35

What was the thread about?

HulksPurplePanties · 26/09/2019 12:37

What else needs warnings? Buttons? Clowns? Stag beetles? Boris fucking Johnson?

I'd like a warning before I have to look at Boris Johnson's face please. He and Trump give me the rage.

Justanotherlurker · 26/09/2019 12:47

empathy is not needed if someone goes onto a thread about spiders.

Common sense for the reader yes, especially when they need to complain about it afterwards. Empathy is not needed for this type of mollycoddling.

fancytiles · 26/09/2019 12:51

That's not a troll, a troll is someone who says very nasty things about people, usually anonymously.

That spider sounds pretty awful though!

Smotheroffive · 26/09/2019 12:55

Mollycoddling - a rude attitude to many who have spider phobias Confused

Are you one of those who find it funny to chuck spiders at people that are scared of them?

How is it any different suddenly seeing a pic of one? That's how phobias work.

Its a pretty natural thing to be fearful of.

Many animals have similar instinctual innate fears.

We overcome many of ours by overpowering the instinct with other awarenesses, but not all, and not everyone.

She threw her phone on the floor, and I feel for her in that. Don't minimise it by sneering about mollycoddling

FoldenHoard · 26/09/2019 12:57

A troll a few years ago put absolutely loads of mutilated bodies and very distressing pictures up with no warning, in threads with innocuous titles, so it is something a troll would do.

IAmALazyArse · 26/09/2019 12:59

I am with @Justanotherlurker if OP actually went on a thread about spiders🤷

Smotheroffive · 26/09/2019 13:00

fancy I think you need to read the TGs.

That is not the description of a troll.

They post stuff to deliberately shock, upset, goad, to sexually pleasure themselves, some of it looks very genuine and isn't overtly horrible to anyone, until you realise the intent, and the way 'the story' develops.

Sadly it impacts on genuine posters needing genuine help that can then be falsely accused of it.

There is a lot of all types of trolling on here.

What you're describing just sounds like online abuse.

PurpleDaisies · 26/09/2019 13:00
