How bad is 16.8mmol

3hrs after eating blueberries?

I bought a new BG meter as I lost my last one - which I bought when I was told I was prediabetic. It arrived today so I tested when I got in. The reading was 16.8mmol.

I'm going to see what my morning readings are but it doesn't look good does it? ☹️

I don't know why this has posted in aibu. In the diabetes topic the app had a section for the topic and I couldn't change it. I don't get that section in aibu.

I posted it anyway to see where it would end up.

That's surprisingly high for just having eaten blueberries - did you wash your hands beforehand? Do you have diabetes symptoms?

taytosandwich · 25/09/2019 23:02

That's a high reading, do berries usually have this effect on your sugars? Usually they're one of the more well tolerated foods. What else had you eaten today?

TottieandMarchpane · 25/09/2019 23:03

High, but is that your first reading since you bought the new monitor? You need a pattern of readings really, to get a feel for what’s happening.

KiaraN83 · 25/09/2019 23:12

I’m type 1 diabetic and I was reading 15/16 in the mornings before I was diagnosed. Youd be best testing an hour after eating and if it’s gone above 20 I’d say you’re diabetic

ElizaDee · 25/09/2019 23:16

I didn't wash my hands, I know I should have but I didn't.

I have been waking up a lot to wee in the night.

I don't know how anything affects my readings as I haven't tested for a few years now.

Today I had

Water throughout the day
Tea with 2 natvia sweeteners

A banana
Egg, bacon, sausage from the canteen

Homemade tomato & bean soup with 3 unbuttered crispbreads

A few strawberries
A few blueberries

Tested when I got in

Pork chop, corn on the cob, peas in shells, roasted broccoli, 2 roasted carrots, shitake mushrooms in butter and garlic

I've been trying to make changes to cut out anything processed or not homemade, so started eating fruit again but I'll have to cut out anything other than berries. The crispbreads are finished so I won't but any more.

Not many carbs in that list. I’d make a GP appointment and get your HbA1C tested.

ElizaDee · 25/09/2019 23:24

I try to avoid carbs. I wouldn't normally eat bananas or carrots. Ive had a hba1c done before but I can't remember what it was.

They tried to make me go on some diabetes course but I didn't because they still push the 3rd of a plate carbs nonsense.

It’s pretty much up there and standard for a diabetic who hasn’t taken insulin or metformin tablets , also as a pre diabetic I’d be concerned unless you had just downed lucozade .

Tatiannatomasina · 25/09/2019 23:27

If you want to control your blood sugar without medication you need to stop eating sausages, unless you get the m and s ones which are low carb. Most have fillers in them so no go. Tomato and bean again not good for blood sugar, both high carb. Bananas are too high in sugar. A few blueberries and strawberries are how many? I would say 3 strawberries tops, a quarter of a cup of blueberries but as a treat and certainly not everyday. Corn, peas and carrots also too high in carbs. Have a look at keto and the diet doctor website. I am pre d and reversed it thanks to keto. I will never be cured but my numbers are good. If I saw 16 I would be very worried, you dont want to go above 6.1 no matter what you eat. Get your hba1c done and see where you are, thats a 3 month average. Normal levels are 5.5 and under.

ichifanny · 25/09/2019 23:27

Sorry posted too soon yes it’s high and would be for someone with diagnosed diabetes .

policeandthieves · 25/09/2019 23:31

This figure indicates diabetes, it is too high for pre diabetes you need to see your GP ASAP

MoreProseccoNow · 25/09/2019 23:34

See what your fasting level is in the morning (after washing your hands) & go from there.

It sounds like you have diabetes symptoms too.

A fasting venous blood sample for glucose & HbA1c would be a sensible thing.

TottieandMarchpane · 25/09/2019 23:36

but I didn't because they still push the 3rd of a plate carbs nonsense.

That grinds my gears too.

salmonrose · 25/09/2019 23:37

That is really too high, you need to see a doctor tomorrow. Untreated diabetes can give you all kinds of organ problems, best to get treatment a.s.a.p.

Proseccoinamug · 25/09/2019 23:38

If you didn’t wash your hands, you can’t rely on the reading obviously. Test your fasting in the morning then two hours after food.

Two separate readings of over 11 are diagnostic of diabetes according to who criteria.

If you get something over 11 make a GP appt for an hba1c

ElizaDee · 25/09/2019 23:44

I thought it was 7+.

I'll take reading for a couple I days and then book a Drs appointment if necessary.

There’s some incorrect information on this thread.

Go to Diabetes.co.uk & get reading.

Listen to podcasts by Jason Fung & Megan Ramos. Or look up their IDM program

Taking your BGL without washing your hands is pointless, wash snd rinse well or all you are measuring is what’s on your skin!

How bad is 16.8mmol
Proseccoinamug · 26/09/2019 00:02

No, 11+

7+ is a high blood sugar but it’s the 11+ that would be diagnostic.
Other things are diagnostic too - hba1c, a glucose tolerance test, a persistently high fasting glucose.

Proseccoinamug · 26/09/2019 00:03

Yup.

Wash, rinse well and dry thoroughly

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 00:07

The good news is that you already know that the ‘Eat well plate’ Nonsense isn’t good advice and that low carb is the way forward ( you just need a better understanding of what carbs are from what you’ve said here)

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 00:25

Blueberries have roughly twice the amount of sugar as raspberries and blackberries.

Sweet corn, peas & beans are high in carbs too.

The easiest place to check how many grams of carbs are in things is to use the Sainsbury’s online shopping site. Look for veg under 4-5g per 100g

Up your good fats, avocados, olive oil, butter.

Avoid milk, a bit if cream is ok in coffee etc or with berries if you must eat them (but you’d be better to avoid the sweet things and wean yourself off ‘sweet’ stuff.

Sweetners tend not to spike blood sugars, but they do affect insulin resistance, so best avoided too.

As a pp said, you need to be careful with sausages- look at the carbs per 100g and chose wisely. (I’m veggie so can’t help with which ones to buy!)

Hopefully your reading was something on your hands, but it does sound like you have other symptoms.

TottieandMarchpane · 26/09/2019 00:30

Blueberries have roughly twice the amount of sugar as raspberries and blackberries.

Sweet corn, peas & beans are high in carbs too.

That’s the way you start thinking AFTER diagnosis, though, isn’t it?

GP should be her first port of call.

Silly to simply double down on the carb cutting and swerve the doctor, when she’s getting such high mmols on what’s already a reasonably low carb diet.

Countryescape · 26/09/2019 00:38

X3 casual readings (non fasting) of over 15mmol is what we classify as diabetic. I’d say you’ve moved from pre-diabetic to diabetic if you have another couple of readings that high. You’ll need to have insulin now. Sorry op

IncrediblySadToo · 26/09/2019 06:22

@TottieandMarchpane. Where did I say not to go to the drs? She already said she’d go.

@Countryescape - who’s is the ‘we’ ?

That’s utter crap about having to go on insulin. People with far higher initial readings have diet controlled their T2D.
