"Women's work"

thatguiltyfeeling · 25/09/2019 17:49

Was recently having a conversation with someone and they said it's the woman's job to clean, cook, care for the children, and the mans job to work.
She's in her early twenties so shouldn't have been brought up with these views I think, and I'm so shocked anyone from my generation believes that.
I responded by saying I don't believe in that ideology and me and my partner split everything evenly, and I actually manage the money whilst he tends to do more of the cooking and cleaning. She then got the hump with me and has been showing off her "lovely clean flat" that apparently isn't clean enough for her, and kept asking to see mine (id done a big sort out that day and had mentioned it in the morning) and when I finally caved and sent one picture she made it clear it wasn't good enough in her eyes.
Aibu to think a) nothing is women's work or men's work, it's just work and b) that no 20something year old should believe that it's their job to do all of that and not accept any other way of living (she was horrified my partner will have our child for a whole day, or cook every night and tried to argue with me about it).

Why are you giving this twat head space? Ignore her.

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 17:53

It's her right to choose do it all same way like it's your right choose to say no to it and share with a partner.

What's not OK is to be pushing individual's choices on others.

TooRightTommy · 25/09/2019 17:55

You run your household in the way best suited to you.
If she wants to run round like a blue arsed fly, it's upto her.
Ignore her.

Hold34 · 25/09/2019 17:58

She sounds like an idiot. Is she a bit of an attention seeker in general? It made me wonder when you said she was shocked at your OH having the kids for a whole day. It's so ridiculous that maybe she was just looking for an argument??

Turningtides · 25/09/2019 17:58

Maybe she’s trying to divert herself from Brexit?

Tensixtysix · 25/09/2019 17:59

I would have laughed right in her face! lol!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 25/09/2019 18:00

If she believes it's a mans role to work why is she...erm...at work?

MyCatHatesEverybody · 25/09/2019 18:01

Sorry just realised I read the OP totally wrong! I'm almost as big a twat as that woman is.

LiveRightNow · 25/09/2019 18:01

Everyone can manage their household however they like. You are obviously not compatible in your views with this person so unless there is some huge reason why you can't just ignore this person (like she's your sister or something), just laugh and move on!

Tensixtysix · 25/09/2019 18:01

Maybe she loves the film 'Stepford Wives'. She could be an escaped robot...

thatguiltyfeeling · 25/09/2019 18:17

She's not clever enough to think about Brexit - doubt she voted if I'm honest.
She's not a sister, but it seems wherever I go she's there. I've tried to leave the group chat and I keep getting added by various people in it, can't block all of them as I actually quite like some of them.
Definitely agree our households are run best suited individually, it just got my back up that she essentially said I'm a bad mum for not being a meagre housewife waiting on my partner and then seemingly asked for pictures of my home to insult it.

Also found out today she's claiming benefits wrongfully so shows what kind of person she is 🤷‍♀️
Just needed a moan about the sexism I think

I believe that there would be more than one woman posting/lurking on MN who would actually like to fulfil the traditional female role of mother and housekeeper but cannot for various reasons, usually financial, so she/her family have that choice removed from them.

Ridiculing another's choice because it is not the same as your values is IMHO wanky. Block her. Disengage from her. She is insecure and you don't need drama llamas in your life

WelcomeToShootingStars · 25/09/2019 18:31

She's every right to choose whatever works best for her, and to have her own ideologies.

Being a housewife or SAHP wouldn't be for me at all. But you come across as a bit of a dick with your "meagre housewife" comment. You're no better than her. You've merely made different choices.

^^This.

WorraLiberty · 25/09/2019 18:34

Good God, just leave each other alone.

If either of you were truly happy with your lot, you'd stop this childish nonsense.

Aprillygirl · 25/09/2019 19:03

You both sound like immature, judgemental people. Sending each other pics of your flats to compare who's is the cleanest is just ridiculous. You both need to grow the fuck up quite honestly.

Teddybear45 · 25/09/2019 19:08

A lot of young girls and women are not as progressive or willing to work (even in their own homes) as their mothers.

StealthPolarBear · 25/09/2019 19:09

Lots of people think like this

OooErMissus · 25/09/2019 19:12

Let her get on with it.

She's the one who'll be picking her partner's scruddy undies off the floor, not you.

If she's fool enough to want that Confused let her crack on.

I'd be laughing at her a bit, if I absolutely had to have dealings with her.

whatever123noname · 25/09/2019 19:27

She’s young, she has no idea what it means to be running a household with several kids while the husband swans off to work leaving her all alone to do all the shit work, dependent on his income and at his beck and call. She probably has some idealized version in her head or she’s too lazy to work and thinks SAHMs have it easy. Rise above and don’t engage.

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 19:28

Isn't the progress actually supposed to be that women should have a choice whether to work, be SAHP, be housewife, be all of the above or even something totally different without others judging them?Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 25/09/2019 19:28

How did the benefits fraud come up in conversation?

RONNIETRIX · 25/09/2019 19:29

You sound like ur in some weird competition ??

gowgow · 25/09/2019 19:39

Does she live in a flat or perhaps a caravan?
