I suppose AIBU to put this here...but it IS the busiest area. I just thought...I'd see if there were any other MNrs in Oz who'd like a little chat thread together?

Hi everyone. I’ve just rejoined to post on this thread. I’ve lived in Aus on and off for 20 years - first Perth, then Sydney and now Melbourne. Spells back in the UK in between times. We have three adult Dds, two moved here with us this time.

BanKittenHeels · 25/09/2019 11:43

Can I join in as a semi-lurker? DH and I have both been offered jobs in Queensland for a second time and we are seriously considering it.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/09/2019 12:53

bluetongue No I'm quite looking forward to the warmer weather. It's been so cold in Adelaide this winter! Our house is old and freezing. That's something I can't get used to...the lack of radiators!

Kitten do it...do you have children to consider though?

HennyPennyHorror · 25/09/2019 12:54

Zaphods aw...Melbourne is beautiful but I'm sure you miss her a lot.

Eagle how long have you been here this time?

OP posts:
Zaphodsotherhead · 25/09/2019 13:06

@HennyPennyHorror Thank you, I do miss her, but I've been out to visit and, you're right, Melbourne is absolutely gorgeous!

BanKittenHeels · 25/09/2019 13:11

.do you have children to consider though?

We do have DC. Aged 14-1. It would obviously be the eldest DC that I would worry about, although my DS who is 14 would probably benefit from a more outdoor lifestyle as he plays a lot of sport and is very talented.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/09/2019 13:52

Kitten the kids here are very nice and sport is of course important to Aussies. Is he a sociable boy? Does he have a lot of friends?

Hello from Vic!

BanKittenHeels · 25/09/2019 13:59

Is he a sociable boy? Does he have a lot of friends?

He is very sociable and whilst he does have a lot of friends here, he makes friends very easily. He is always joining new clubs and making friends, which is I suppose why I’m even entertaining the thought of such a move at his age. If he wasn’t as sociable, I would probably think him too old to make this move.

WhippetyStourie · 25/09/2019 14:01

Hi from Adelaide.

MyChickensAreIdiots · 25/09/2019 14:05

Another South Australian checking in. Just waiting for that beach weather to kick in again ...

HennyPennyHorror · 25/09/2019 14:11

MyChickens I have to be honest and say that I can't stand the beach when it's hot. There's no protection...and I don't enjoy sitting on scratchy sand under a shelter at all. Maybe it's because I don't swim? I can't very well and hate getting wet!

I like sitting in the garden when it's warm though.

Think there are a few Victorians here.

Cordial11 · 25/09/2019 14:15

Im Perth! Mount Lawley moving to Padbury next month Grin PR is pending ahhh!!!

EagleSqueak · 25/09/2019 22:53

HennyPenny, two years now, but I’ve been back and forth to the UK in that time, so it doesn’t feel that long!
I’m waiting for the warm weather to come back too!

bluetongue · 25/09/2019 22:57

Oh dear, it looks like I’m alone in not liking summer. I have always said I was born in the wrong country Grin

Can we all at least agree that Scott Morrison is a dick?

Percivalthebabyspider · 25/09/2019 23:39

Yes Bluetongue, yes we most certainly can.

StartupRepair · 25/09/2019 23:41

Yes we can. I thought he was an oaf and a buffoon but he is worse than that.
I found Melbourne winter a bit long and cold this year but I also dread the 40+ days to come.

HennyPennyHorror · 25/09/2019 23:55

Kitten some friends of mine made the move when their oldest DS was 16 and their youngest 13. I was a bit Hmm at the time....I still lived in England and didn't think I'd ever move to Oz....I wondered how the older boy would make friends....but of course, it's different here.

He went to school here in Oz for two years, eventually got an apprenticeship and had loads of mates within months of his arrival.

Now he's in his early twenties and engaged and happy. He was and is also sociable and friendly.

It's easy for kids like that here.

Kitten we moved just before DS1's 14th Birthday, everyone said we were mad (other kids were 8 and 3). He settled really well despite us pulling hm out of his first high school after six weeks when it turned out the promised support for his dyslexia was bullshit, and starting him elsewhere. He was pretty sporty though so found it easy to make friends. He has been back to the UK twice in recent years and tells us how grateful he is that he doesn't have to live there. He is 26 now, married with a decent job and studying for a Masters, he has become a real Aussie 😊

Koalablue · 26/09/2019 01:49

Can we all at least agree that Scott Morrison is a dick?

NoGrin. Dicks have a purpose and can bring pleasure. ScoMo is neither of those.

HennyPennyHorror · 26/09/2019 01:54

Snows it's great isn't it? When you look at your kids and realise how Australian they are? My youngest particularly so...she was 7 when we came so now she sounds Australian. My eldest was just 11 when we came and she regularly says how glad she is that we chose to come.

JustMoved123 · 26/09/2019 02:03

Hi, can I join in? We’ve just moved over (2 weeks ago). Also in Perth
Just myself and my husband - grown up children are back in Europe.
We’re just waiting to sign on a house rental and get our things shipped over.
Anyone know where i should join to meet people, it’s harder without children.

echt · 26/09/2019 02:46

I found Melbourne winter a bit long and cold this year but I also dread the 40+ days to come

There have been some spectacularly cold days, to be sure but I always compare them to the UK ones, overcast for the most part where here at least it's so often sunny. All that aside, I love the first day I don't put the heating on to take the edge off the morning - today as it happens - so lots of gardening to do.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 26/09/2019 03:59

I can't wait for summer. I've totally acclimatised, and was still using my electric blanket last week. I am lucky enough to live 5 mins walk from the beach, and can't bloody wait for it to be warm enough to get back in the water! To think I used to go to the beach back home if it was 20 degrees, I need 30 degrees now before I even consider it, and prefer 35! Grin

On a side note though, I wonder how long it will take for someone to tell us we're all a bunch of racists? Grin
