To think the dry cleaners lent out my shoes?!

Finally got round, two years later, to dropping my wedding shoes at the dry cleaners to be cleaned. Not sure if relevant to the story but they are a fancy pants designer shoe (for context, nice and only worn once by me on wedding day). Bit marked so wanted them cleaned. This was 6 weeks ago and I forgot to go and get them. Went in today and the guy looked extremely bloody shifty and said he cleaned them but as I was late he got a special whitener which arrived yesterday which he will use on them for a special touch so I can’t get them until next week. I did not see my shoes. I felt he was lying to me somehow but accepted the story, relayed it to DH who says I’m an idiot and they have clearly lent them to a friend or something similar and I should’ve said it’s fine I want them now.

Is this a thing?! Do dry cleaners do this?!

If you’re embarrassed do what I would do but never admit it! Call with withheld number until someone else picks up. Ask about your shoes. If they aren’t there tell them what you said here.

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 19:37

I might send my mother in because I don’t want to go in with my 1 year old/look like a complete idiot and my mother is quite scary/they know her in there too....

Go back tomorrow, insist on having them back immediately tell them you've waited as long as you can. You don't need to give a reason but you could always say you need them for a special occasion?

They have your shoes. Tell them to hand them over or you will call the police for theft (maybe over dramatic but you know, threaten action if they don't return your property etc)

Then return back and update us OP as I suspect some cf'ery is occurring.

Slappadabass · 24/09/2019 19:37

Sounds dodgy! Maybe he's just forgotten to clean them and he's going to get them done by tomorrow.
Definitely go back tomorrow though!

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 19:38

I am having fucking kittens now!!! I wish they were open now!!!! Fuck fuck fuck!!!!!!!

What are the chances that they just lent them and will get them back?!?

imnotinthemood · 24/09/2019 19:39

Like others said go in tomorrow say you need them this weekend thought the event was next week I need to get them today .
I find it very suspicious that the guy kept your ticket .
I really hope that's he's just lent to someone and gets them back tonight .

Wherearemycrayons · 24/09/2019 19:41

Oh OP!! I hope you get them back id be absolutely fuming!

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 19:41

Me too!!! I also knew there was something up with what he was telling me - you know when you just know.

Sorry but I don't think you'll see the shoes again or they are damaged. You will have to go in yourself, maybe take mum for moral support.

BishBashBoshy · 24/09/2019 19:42

The dry cleaners here keep stuff for 4 weeks here and sell it on.

Sorry. Hope you get them back.

OrchidInTheSun · 24/09/2019 19:42

I used to work at a dry cleaners and his story is bullshit, sorry. You have no proof that he has your shoes which I think was deliberate.

I would go tomorrow (or get your mum to go) and just keep asking for the shoes. If you don't get them back, call the police while you're in the shop. Seriously. (111 not 999 obviously)

zxcvhjkl · 24/09/2019 19:42

What kind of shoes are they @crispysausagerolls Prada, White, Size 6 any other description you can share?
Mumsnet are going to Miss Marple this CF dry cleaner. Envy

bunnypenny · 24/09/2019 19:43

A couple of years ago my dry cleaner “lost” two pairs of LK Bennet shoes and an LK Bennet dress. I was raging.

TidyDancer · 24/09/2019 19:43

Something similar happened to me. I wore a dress to a wedding that cost maybe £200 so not designer but still pretty nice. It had a single red wine mark on it when I took it in but when I went to pick it up they said they'd had difficulty cleaning it because of the amount of stains on it. When they brought it out it had blatantly been worn and was covered in marks including candle wax. They denied it being used by them but it clearly was. Cheeky bastards. Have never used them again and spread the word amongst everyone I know.

Hope you get your shoes back.

Gazelda · 24/09/2019 19:46

Is it an independent dry cleaners, or part of a chain?
Does it have a Website that shows its policy on how long they keep hold of items?

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 19:46

These are my shoes. I know it sounds stupid etc because I won’t wear them again probably but they are my wedding shoes!! How could someone do this?! Maybe he is getting them back?

To think the dry cleaners lent out my shoes?!

God thank you all for the replies and support btw - very appreciated. Going to check their website now

OP posts:
crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 19:49

They are not a chain and nothing on their website - looks of good testimonials though...

OP posts:
MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 24/09/2019 19:50

Well - you are never going to wear them again, are you? What are you going to do with them if you get them back?

FreshwaterBay · 24/09/2019 19:51

It always amazes me how internet forums, while appearing to be some private secret domain, are in fact a gift to the other near 7 billion people who are observers and in particular to the one person with the golden ticket who you really do not want to be reading this.

CrazyToast · 24/09/2019 19:52

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel not really the point---even if she just keeps them in her cupboard it doesnt mean the dry cleaner should just be able to nick them!

hittheroadjack1 · 24/09/2019 19:52

Hope you get them back op
