To think the dry cleaners lent out my shoes?!

Finally got round, two years later, to dropping my wedding shoes at the dry cleaners to be cleaned. Not sure if relevant to the story but they are a fancy pants designer shoe (for context, nice and only worn once by me on wedding day). Bit marked so wanted them cleaned. This was 6 weeks ago and I forgot to go and get them. Went in today and the guy looked extremely bloody shifty and said he cleaned them but as I was late he got a special whitener which arrived yesterday which he will use on them for a special touch so I can’t get them until next week. I did not see my shoes. I felt he was lying to me somehow but accepted the story, relayed it to DH who says I’m an idiot and they have clearly lent them to a friend or something similar and I should’ve said it’s fine I want them now.

Is this a thing?! Do dry cleaners do this?!

*He forgot and knowing how hysterical you are, rather than admitting it and seeing you "go nuclear" and ruin his business over a small error, opted to tell a little white lie to give himself breathing space.

Your mum knows how flaky you are and got the shoes back so she can have some peace rather than leave them with the dry cleaners and have to hear you moan for the rest of your life about how your life was ruined by an untrustworthy dry cleaner who made a simple error.*

Have you been drinking? 😂 If not, you must be a joy to have to live with.

If the guy just held his hand up and told the truth, all this could have been avoided. He had 6 weeks to clean the shoes. He could have forgotten but should have been honest about it. And him saying he was going to courier them over was just him trying to save his skin. Too right he should have had them delivered to you.

It always amazes me how internet forums, while appearing to be some private secret domain, are in fact a gift to the other near 7 billion people who are observers and in particular to the one person with the golden ticket who you really do not want to be reading this

Can't believe this comment caused pages of confusion

It sounded like a very cool way of the poster doing a reveal that they were, in fact, the dry cleaner!

Your other explanation I don’t think makes sense because doing a second treatment 6 weeks later is surely not something someone would do (especially as people on here think 6 weeks is a life time in dry cleaning and the clothes then go to the dry cleaning graveyard!)

I don't think I explained correctly. I'll explain. I once left my beloved pale grey wool coat into our local dry-cleaners. Very reputable and in business for decades. I had lovingly hugged my curry cheese chips home from a drunken night out so that's what they were dealing with Grin She was a bit dubious, especially when I mentioned it was curry sauce (the poor woman actually winced) but said that sometimes if the stain doesn't come out on the first go at it, they do a different spot treatment and put it through cleaning the second time, that they do that for stubborn or notorious stains like curry. But they'd do the second go right away, not six weeks later!

And yes, my coat was perfect on pick up.

Honestly some of the replies on here are awful!! Some real nasty people on MN!

Definitely get them professionally dyed. If they are real silk, which I would assume so if Prada, then ideal for dyeing.

BenWillbondsPants · 26/09/2019 17:07

Maybe he did get them sparkly clean - then lent them to someone else who got them grubby again and didn't have time to get them clean again.

Just posting to say please don't dye them black or navy!

They are such beautiful shoes - don't make them everyday. Dye them turquoise or peacock or magenta or something vibrant.

Honestly, no one should "match" their shoes to their outfit. It looks dull. Dye those shoes black and they will look like nothing. Dye them orange and they will go with everything :)
