To think the dry cleaners lent out my shoes?!

Finally got round, two years later, to dropping my wedding shoes at the dry cleaners to be cleaned. Not sure if relevant to the story but they are a fancy pants designer shoe (for context, nice and only worn once by me on wedding day). Bit marked so wanted them cleaned. This was 6 weeks ago and I forgot to go and get them. Went in today and the guy looked extremely bloody shifty and said he cleaned them but as I was late he got a special whitener which arrived yesterday which he will use on them for a special touch so I can’t get them until next week. I did not see my shoes. I felt he was lying to me somehow but accepted the story, relayed it to DH who says I’m an idiot and they have clearly lent them to a friend or something similar and I should’ve said it’s fine I want them now.

Is this a thing?! Do dry cleaners do this?!

If gone get the dry cleaners to refund you the full value of the shoes.
I had a white suit ruined accidentally by biro ink in dry cleaners they ask me for receipt for proof of cost which I did and got refunded. Took the suit back but I threw out as thought no good but in hindsight I could have tried to dye it a strong colour to disguise the ink stains.
If you do get your shoes back fingers crossed you could put into a shadow box frame with bits and pieces from your wedding day and pics and hang up on wall or a decorative table.

HopeIsNotAStrategy

Do you have an issue with Prada? What’s with the face?

I think he's given them to his wife/gf

Yikes, what did you say to them?!

I left a very expensive Hobbs dress I one wear once in a blue moon at the dry cleaners for six months just because I dropped it off and then completely forgot about it because I don’t actually wear it. I don’t have lots of expensive clothes and am usually very organised but if it’s not a shirt or a suit or something you WEAR it just goes to the back of your mind wardrobe just like your physical one. @HopeIsNotAStrategy not sure why wedding shoes (or any shoes) being Prada gets a face.

titnomatani · 24/09/2019 21:53

If he's taken your ticket, there's no proof they have your shoes even if you know you gave them to them. You should've insisted on getting the ticket back.

Imnotbent · 24/09/2019 21:56

@crispysausagerolls Did you check completed listings on eBay?

Branster · 24/09/2019 21:58

These are your special shoes and am not at all surprised you want them back and you want them to be pristine - I don’t understand the sarcastic comments about why you would possibly need them back.
First of all, although they are very special, they can be replaced so please don’t get upset about them over night.
Go back tomorrow and ask for them or let your DM work her magic.
You’ll either get them back there and then either having not been cleaned or having not been cleaned properly or with clear signs of further wear.
Or you don’t get them back tomorrow because they are gone. They might re-appear next week as promised if they have been lent or gifted to someone. Or they might not re-appear if they have been sold on eBay, Depop, local dress agency or even pawned.
Worst case scenarios: they are gone or they are damaged. In which case you demand the value of the shoes and buy a replacement pair. You will get support from somewhere like Trading Standards.
However, if you don’t get your own shoes back, you are bound to feel sad about it. In that case, perhaps try to put it in perspective, it is a pair of shoes you can replace. It’s not your wedding dress or ... your husband Grin
I so hope you’ll get them back tomorrow. Please update!

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 24/09/2019 22:00

Six weeks is well within the time limit for collection. He does not have them. Go in and demand them back.

No - I didn’t know this was a thing?

branster

What a lovely and understanding post, thank you! X

Good grief calm down!
Likelihood is he had forgotten to clean them and didn’t want to admit it so made up about the extra whitening.
Just go tomorrow and ask for them as you have decided you want to wear them this weekend. No big deal.

SunshineCake · 24/09/2019 22:04

It's very obvious to me what FreshwaterBay's point it.

Good luck getting your shoes back, OP.

Imnotbent · 24/09/2019 22:06

Well if they had been sold or listed previously and taken down they won’t show up for current sale now. You would need to filter completed listings to see if they had been for sale.

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 22:08

SunshineCake

Would you mind explaining the point please, as several other posters and I have failed to understand it?

imnotbent

Checked completed listings and they aren’t there, thank you for the idea!

My first thought would be they’ve been “borrowed” and you will get them back, but with signs of use.

GinandGingerBeer · 24/09/2019 22:09

I think you've been taken to the dry cleaners op. Wink

SunshineCake · 24/09/2019 22:12

Point being that most people posting think their posts would never be read by the subject or by someone they know but this would be a gift to the dry cleaner if he or anyone who knows what happened to the shoes sees it.

John1971 · 24/09/2019 22:13

They’re on Gumtree

notapizzaeater · 24/09/2019 22:15

Really on gumtree ? Can you search for them ?

John is this a confession?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/09/2019 22:16

Hope you get your shoes back. This is why I haven’t had my wedding dress cleaned.

crispysausagerolls · 24/09/2019 22:16

john

I’ve had a look on there and can’t see them...
