To never go in my little girls room again!?

FedUp1850 · 24/09/2019 00:22

Soooooooo Aragog is residing in my little girls bedroom. He is massive. I just can't go in there. He's been in there for days, I shut the door and put a blanket down at the bottom to hopefully keep it in there.

I'm petrified of spiders. My mum said that her mum put one right up in her face when she was a kid, thinking about it almost sent me into cardiac arrest 😅. Someone help me overcome this irrational fear!

I have THE WORST arachnophobia ever. My DP said he’s never seen someone react the way I do - crying, sweating, shaking etc.
I have a large plastic bowl that I take from room to room with me during the autumn months when huge ones start appearing in the house. If I see one then I try and psych myself up to put the bowl over it. DP then removes it to the garden (if he’s at home when I see it then he just deals with it for me straight away without me having to use the bowl).
When I lived on my own I used to have to get a neighbour or a friend to come and deal with it for me. My useless cat would just play with it and make it run around the room like crazy. I have a spider catcher but I’ve never been able to use it yet

We have a spider catcher bought from Argos. I'm also terrified of spiders and have to steel myself to catch them but it's just about manageable.
£14.99 from Argos and well worth the money

Open a window. Throw a towel over spider. Scoop up towel. Run to window. Hurl towel as far as possible. That's my preferred method.

I've tried vacuuming them up, but it suffocates them, you find the little bodies in the bag :(

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/09/2019 07:28

My dd also has arachnophobia. I have no idea how she has it as I tried not to pass it on. I had hypnotherapy for it many years ago. It helped a little. I can now look at them and hoover them up. I will still freak if a big house spider runs across the floor.

MollyButton · 24/09/2019 07:28

Get a spider catcher (or more than one). And try to get a grip before you pass on your fear to your DD!

CigarsofthePharoahs · 24/09/2019 07:34

Could be worse. Could be Shelob. You'd need an elven blade for that one.

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/09/2019 07:35

I am with you OP! Basically I scream blue murder until a neighbour comes over and rescues me! They are used to it now...

RiftGibbon · 24/09/2019 07:42

I was on holiday recently when a fricking huge house spider suddenly ran across the floor. DC spotted it and started to panic so I had to find a pint glass and put that over it (all the other glasses were too small).
Managed to find some sturdy card to trap the spider in the glass with and then put it outside.
I didn't want DC to pick up on my dislike of spiders so had to force myself to remain calm-looking.

istolethisusernametoo · 24/09/2019 07:45

It's the spider's house now! You only have one option; take what you can from the house and then move. The rest belongs to the spider.

FedUp1850 · 24/09/2019 07:50

@BelleSausage NO.

@29SaraNade well that was just evil. I've always wanted to move to Australia but I just don't think I can!

07OneAutumnMorning I have no idea, it's just been ever since I was about 10 and this wolf spider was on my wall in my bedroom and I turned over to see it looking at me! I've never been able to get over it.

@28MollyButton I'm really trying, I don't want her to pick up my irrational fears. It's the same with the dentist, I turn in to a shaking mess - I get sedated for treatment. I've come to the conclusion that she just can't come to my appointments.

FedUp1850 · 24/09/2019 07:58

@45istolethisusernametoo it's the only option!

Step one - cautiously open door
Step two - wait for spider to appear
Step three - flail energetically at it with a shoe
Step four - if it's still not dead, move

KUGA · 24/09/2019 08:00

Spray peppermint oil all around the door and windows.
Works in this house haven`t seen a spider for ages.

Nanamilly · 24/09/2019 08:03

OP, the thread is a diversion for you but its doing nothing to help you deal with the situation. Do you have a real fear of spiders or is it one of those things where people say they have a fear but they don't really?

There is a spider in the room and you want rid of it so could you go into the room with a long handled broom and guide the spider along to a window. Or could you knock it off the wall and stamp on it trap it under something before putting it outside?

Remember that genuine phobias are serious and you more than likely could deal with this yourself.

AllStarBySmashMouth · 24/09/2019 08:03

Do you have a friend or relative nearby that you could call to shift it for you? I am guilty of having called my DF when there was a wasp in the house. Spiders I don't mind, but fuck those stripey flying demons.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/09/2019 08:04

she's just one and can't even stand yet, never mind catch spiders.

At that age mine would have happily eaten spiders.

It that a possible solution?

(Of course, you won't ever be able to kiss her chubby little pink lips, or allow her to kiss you, ever again, and may have to knit her a "Hannibal Lecter" mask, but that is a small price to pay to get rid of a spider.)

KOKOagainandagain · 24/09/2019 08:04

Re the conkers ... DS1 has a huge fear of spiders and did this in his room. Spiders ignored them but the mice really appreciated that he was leaving food out for them (we live in an old farmhouse). He even thought he saw them out of the corner of his eye but thought he must be imagining it and never said anything until I questioned why there were conker crumbs in the corners and the window sill.

FedUp1850 · 24/09/2019 08:05

@CigarsofthePharoahs erghhh. I suppose Aragog is the lesser of the two evils, still.

OP posts:
Orangecake123 · 24/09/2019 08:06

But you can't get rid of Aargog now he's part of the family. He's graced you with his presence after all so what if he tries to eat you.

FedUp1850 · 24/09/2019 08:06

@59TheProdigalKittensReturn I am not opening the door. So steps 2-4 are impossible.

Someone just had to mention wasps, didn't they?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/09/2019 08:09
