To hate "going for a walk?"

I wish I didn't but I just find it so boring! Walking around the same streets, passing the same lamp posts and houses. We live in a fairly decent area and have two lovely dogs. DH walks the dogs twice a day and absolutely loves it but I just find walking so tedious. I wish I didn't hate it as its great to get out and get fresh air etc but I find it such a chore. Anyone else feel the same?

I’ve found my people!
Hate it too. No problem if there’s a purpose and I walk miles on holiday. But just for the sake of it? Nope. I’d rather hit the treadmill and catch up on shows.

Bouledeneige · 23/09/2019 23:09

I loved walking but not through streets or the same way everyday. But in green spaces, woods, the disused railway line, the heath - love it.

gingersausage · 23/09/2019 23:14

@Crazyladee I’m disabled and I’m not offended Wink. For me, it’s a good excuse to get out of it. My MIL loves dragging everyone off for “nice country walks”, these days I get to stay at home with a cuppa and my book.

I didn’t mind walking for a purpose; as I can’t drive I walked to work for 20 odd years, and obviously did the school run, but just ambling along is tedious.

Cath2907 · 23/09/2019 23:14

I do 2 walks a day with the dog, roughly 40 minutes each. Highlight of my day. If I have to miss a few (I have a dog walker when work is mental) I get twitchy!!

You could try an audiobook. I love walking and running outside but only an audiobook can get me through a treadmill run.

MoaningNet · 23/09/2019 23:26

I agree op, walking is definitely overrated. It’s so boring,
.
But ....... I’m almost 60 and my body is starting to ‘seize up’. Very soon I don’t think I’ll have much choice but to walk, walk, walk everyday 😱

Belgianbuns · 23/09/2019 23:41

I am with you OP. Walking is so boring. It is far too slow for me. I would prefer to run (if only I could......) 😂😂

Clitoria · 23/09/2019 23:44

If you’re dogwalking, observe how cute your dog is and how they’re enjoying the walk, listen to audiobooks (this is crucial), then it’s bearable, despite other people being out with their dogs they let run up to others who are blatantly avoiding them, and having your day interrupted by people who feel entitled to chat shite at you whilst you exercise your dog, earphones, body language and no eye contact doesn’t deter them. It’s the dogless people walking in muddy dog walking areas who look genuinely appalled and repulsed at people’s canine family members being there too that baffles me, they’re always wearing white or beige trousers, too, on a mud slick path, looking horrified 😄 like, away back to your souped up Land Rover, mate 😆

PickAChew · 23/09/2019 23:45

I don't go "for a walk". I walk to the shop to pick up some bread (or whatever) while catching pokemon.

SkiingIsHeaven · 23/09/2019 23:50

Audiobooks is the answer. Catch up on my reading at the same time.

Time goes more quickly when someone reads to you.

Mothership4two · 23/09/2019 23:50

I love taking the dog out for a walk but have a neuroma and plantar fasciitis so not been able to do much recently. I am not that keen on walking past houses though. Why don't you jump in car and go somewhere more interesting maybe where dogs can run around? Country parks? Beaches/rivers/lakes? Common land? Moorland?

kateandme · 24/09/2019 00:17

are you someone who cant sit still and do nothing or let there minds wander.
you need to just let your mind go blank when your walking, let what thoughts come.it can be so peaceful.
try pod casts.podbean is brill and i love listening to my favouritepodcasts.
and if i get a bit eeee about just walking i listen to it.or try walking one with just listening and being and then on the way home putting in the ears and listening to my podcasts.make it easier sometimes to manage.

squeekums · 24/09/2019 00:18

I love walking but only if i have somewhere to be. Walking just randomly to nowhere, no thanks

GibbonLover · 24/09/2019 00:24

I bloody love walking! It does me the world of good and helps keep the arthritis at bay. It's also a great opportunity to meet cute dogs! Sometimes my joints are too bad to do anything and honestly, it's the lack of fresh air and movement that gets me down rather than the pain.

I'll always walk rather than drive whenever possible. YANBU to dislike it though, we dislike what we dislike don't we, we can't change it.

Cherrysoup · 24/09/2019 00:28

Walking the streets is boring as fuck, unless you’re somewhere interesting. The same streets over and over is very boring.

I like walking the dogs in the woods/at the river. We always take the car.

madcatladyforever · 24/09/2019 00:29

Also get cats, they take themselves for walks.

Enko · 24/09/2019 00:59

Another one who dislikes it and I particularly hate it when I have just had a big meal and then get told " lets go for a walk its so good for digestion" it makes me feel sick.. really nauseated if I have to exercise like that after a big meal.. everyone else loves it and goes on about how amazing it is and I am all mehhh...

OK with gym/running/walking somewhere for a purpose.. But no I dont want to go for a wander in the forrest.. I will stay home and make tea and cake ty

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 24/09/2019 01:04

Dog ownership seems like an odd choice for you OP?

cabingirl · 24/09/2019 01:30

I grew up in the Lake District - I HATE going for a walk in rural areas! But in my 20s discovered I loved walking around a city - I spent hours walking around London - absolutely loved it.

Still hate countryside walks - no idea why!

AngelsOnHigh · 24/09/2019 01:42

I don't mind walking if I have a destination. For instance I will walk to my friend's home about 30 minutes walk, have a chat and a drink and then walk back home again.

sayanythingelse · 24/09/2019 03:12

I hate it. We recently went on holiday to Spain with PILs and whilst me, DH and DD visited waterparks, theme parks and the zoo, PILs spent their whole holiday just walking. Miles and miles of walking everyday.

It's a no from me. I don't do any aimless walking unless theres a promise of the pub at the end of it.

Oysterbabe · 24/09/2019 04:50

My SIL is actually the worst for insisting on getting out for walks. She can't just be for even 5 minutes. I think we're seeing them for Christmas this year and already dreading her insistence in a Christmas day walk. How about a Christmas day sit and glass of wine?

MaudesMum · 24/09/2019 07:52

I'm a bit of a garden and architecture fanatic (and love people watching), so I get a lot of pleasure walking in towns and cities - I'm never bored. I think there's always something interesting to see even in a suburban street. Also love walking in foreign cities, and the countryside (although I'm pretty slow on hills these days). To me its a combination of exercise, and getting my head away from work. It does get a bit circular, though. A few years ago I was pretty overweight, so it was uncomfortable to walk, so I didn't do much, so I didn't enjoy it. I'm now less overweight, so its easier to walk, so I do more of it, so I enjoy it more...

RedHelenB · 24/09/2019 07:59

The reason I like walking my dog is he absolutely loves it,sniffing away tail.wagging full of the Joy's of spring!
