To hate "going for a walk?"

I wish I didn't but I just find it so boring! Walking around the same streets, passing the same lamp posts and houses. We live in a fairly decent area and have two lovely dogs. DH walks the dogs twice a day and absolutely loves it but I just find walking so tedious. I wish I didn't hate it as its great to get out and get fresh air etc but I find it such a chore. Anyone else feel the same?

I enjoy walking, but the scenery definitely has an impact. I could spend hours exploring somewhere new/interesting but would be bored to tears in my area.

morrisseysquif · 23/09/2019 21:59

Walking around my own streets - dull
A walk in the woods /countryside / beach / new town or city - love it.

No amount of walking is the same as the gym though.
Great for legs, lower body, stamina and cardio if a brisk pace.
Not much exercise for top half of body or for flexilbility.

Poochnewbie · 23/09/2019 22:04

I absolutely love it. I live in a beautiful place and love climbing the hills and looking over the valley. I come across deer and salmon in the river, there are owls and birds of prey. I love seeing what I can find.
I like to run too. The dog loves walks and runs 😊

Dontsayyouloveme · 23/09/2019 22:07

speakout I totally agree. I’d do 40 mins on the cross trainer over 40 mins of walking, any day!

purpleolive · 23/09/2019 22:09

Walking is the only exercise I get. I try to go for 2 x 15 minute walks a day at work or a 30 minute walk on the weekend. I listen to an audiobook. My life is pretty sedentary otherwise!

57Varieties · 23/09/2019 22:14

A few months ago I’d have said the same and never really did it, but then last week I completed a 15 mile charity walk. Grin

I like it now, comfy shoes and socks and a jacket, earphones in with music or audiobooks, and off for a wander.

cdtaylornats · 23/09/2019 22:14

Buy a skateboard, don't go for a walk go for a tow.

@Crazyladee

OMG I LOVE going for a walk. We do live in a rural/countryside area though, so it's very pleasant whichever direction we go in. We have the canal and the river closeby, and also woodlands and meadows and farms, so there are lots of wild animals, and farm animals and birds etc... We also live at a high altitude, so there are a lot of great views for many miles.....

So as there is always something nice to look at around us, it's a pleasure to go for a walk. Where we used to live (pre 2010s,) in a big town, we could never go for walks, as it was all main roads, and shops and housing estates. There was nowhere to walk that was safe.

57Varieties · 23/09/2019 22:19

I’m in awe @Newsheet that’s brilliant. I’d love to get up to a marathon length walk in a year or so. I’m very fat and unfit so I decided just to walk, pleased with my progress but would definitely love to go further.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 23/09/2019 22:21

Newsheet so on a Sunday you walk for 8 hours non stop at a fast pace to achieve 30 miles?

BarbedBloom · 23/09/2019 22:24

I hate going for a walk, though I do have joint issues so it hurts. I do find sometimes though that if it is somewhere with lots of things to see e.g. a zoo, or near the sea then I can tolerate it a bit more. But then I could happily spend hours and hours swimming and others would be bored by that

Tonnerre · 23/09/2019 22:25

I agree, it's terribly boring. I listen to podcasts and audiobooks to make it bearable.

Trenchcoated · 23/09/2019 22:28

@FlatheadScrewdriver, why don’t you feel safe on a country walk?

Ronnie27 · 23/09/2019 22:31

Same. I run miles and miles every week but somehow bloody hate walking. So dull. Grin

thriftyhen · 23/09/2019 22:34

Love walking! First thing I do in the morning is get up and walk the dogs. It sets me up for the day. You sound bored by it and it doesn't seem as though you have much variety in your walks. Is there nowhere different you could walk or could you find a friend who would like to walk with you? Hope you find a solution as I think you are missing out!

WheelDecide · 23/09/2019 22:38

I’d do anything to be able to go for a walk- I’m waiting for hip replacement surgery and it’s just too painful at the moment. I love walking

This ^^ I walked everywhere a few years ago. I'm not that old but I ran too much and my knees gave in and now my back hurts often every second of a dog walk.

If you don't enjoy it, don't do it. Why not try something like agility or other dog stuff that is a bit more exciting?

Bellsofstclements · 23/09/2019 22:39

I love a good walk - not up any hills or in the countryside though. I like coasts and towns/cities. One of my favourite things to do when DS was new was to take him for walks for hours, he'd sleep, I'd listen to podcasts and look at all the fancy houses I can't afford. Now, he's a toddler and we have to walk at snails pace and look at sticks.

AdultHumanFemale · 23/09/2019 22:43

This is making me laugh! As someone who loves walking and can think of few things I'd rather do, I find it incomprehensible that other people aren't as thrilled with a stroll around the block as I am!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 23/09/2019 22:47

I love walking, but I hate the idea of going for a walk. I need a purpose- so going to the far side of the bay to collect driftwood/find a lost sheep or walking to the cemetery to lay flowers are all fine, but just walking without an aim other than doing some walking feels odd to me.

Newsheet · 23/09/2019 22:50

Newsheet so on a Sunday you walk for 8 hours non stop at a fast pace to achieve 30 miles

I just walk places. If I go to see my mum
In the morning that’s 5, if I go for lunch in a town nearby then that might be 6. Meet a friend for a pint or to watch the football (or both) maybe 5 miles etc.

I walk about 4.5 miles in an hour depending on terrain. That’s in work shoes and trousers with laptop in a back pack

LolaSmiles · 23/09/2019 22:53

I love walking in the country and like walking the dog, but the idea of walking round the park or street on my own sounds dull.

conderellainyellakissedafella · 23/09/2019 23:00

I love going for a walk but dp is disabled and we don't get to do it anymore😢

KatherineJaneway · 23/09/2019 23:02

I hate 'going for a walk', never understood the attraction.

OrangeCinnamon · 23/09/2019 23:02

I must be bloody boring I do the same walk everyday to work and have done for last 16 years ...I dont even find it tedious. I.like a walk near the local harbour or countryside in fair weather too. If it's not for you it's not for you..obviously lots of people feel the same.
