Or will there be exceptions for the mega wealthy and powerful?

Would love to see it happen but not a cat in hell's chance in this sorry excuse for a country sadly.

pottedshrimps · 23/09/2019 14:33

What about all the sen kids whose parents have to send them to private schools due to lack of provision in state schools? My ds has aspergers and didn't cope in state school due to bullying. He goes to a private online school. Labour going to fix this problem then? I hardly think so.

Merename · 23/09/2019 14:35

@AsTheWorldTurns, yes, the aim is to have a more equal society where we care about what everyone needs, not just those with money. Challenging the idea that the education, or life chances ‘across the board’ of some people’s children should not be more important than others shouldn’t be a bold idea, but it is. The impacts of inequality are quite well researched and documented. There’s a summary on this page, and the references are at the bottom of you want to do further reading. www.equalitytrust.org.uk/health

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 14:36

Funny how alot of people who benefitted from private schools no longer want them.

It's not going to happen. Not at all. They know it wont they know they wont get in. They can promise all sorts. Cause it's not going to happen

Pringlesfortea · 23/09/2019 14:38

This will get me voting labour again after 20 + years of not doing...excellent policy ,
Why should a child’s education be limited because parents can’t afford a private school, why should the top jobs go to those who went to the most expensive private schools.
All children should have the same educational opportunities, money should not be allowed to discriminate against poorer pupils

Symptomless · 23/09/2019 14:41

I'd want to have a more equal education opportunity to all the kids in UK. Rich, poor, sen etc included. Independent schools have their place but when we have a system that is forcing people to go private rather than be able to rely on state provided education then we know we've got a lot of work to do still.

ajandjjmum · 23/09/2019 14:42

Bit like abolishing student fees in the last election manifesto. They can promise the world, because they won't be called upon to see it through.

Bluntness100 · 23/09/2019 14:44

Lol, you don't actually believe labour will actually get into power and then be able to get this through both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, you don't really do you?

SoupDragon · 23/09/2019 14:46

once the private education sector has its assets confiscated by the state.

How can they confiscate their assets?

LesLavandes · 23/09/2019 14:48

This is a ridiculous thread.

Private schools will not be abolished. End of stupid conversation

Pringlesfortea · 23/09/2019 14:49

I don’t know ,politics has always been a bit meh to me ,I’ve always voted ,but never felt any of the policies were what I’d want to see happen, everything felt watered down.
Now this ,and I think yes ,I’m interested,I think it could level the playing field for all children,I’m waiting now to hear what else they are going to do ,labour has caught my interest

Normanpriceeh · 23/09/2019 14:50

Bollocks is anyone (bar parents of children with SEN) "forced" to go private. Absolutely lame fucking excuse. I went to an inner city London comp with a 30% GCSE pass rate. I have a first class degree from a good university and an MA to boot.

If every single fucking politician and rich person had to send their child to state school, you bet your life that money to improve those state schools would magically appear.

As a higher rate taxpayer, I would be delighted to pay significantly more tax to ensure better public services for all, including education, as per the scandinavian system.

SilverySurfer · 23/09/2019 14:51

You might ask the same question of all the labour MPs who send their child/ren to private school Hmm

Of course the Royal Family won't send them to state school, they will have private tutors.

LesLavandes · 23/09/2019 14:51

Have you nothing else to do? 😂

SoupDragon · 23/09/2019 14:51

All children should have the same educational opportunities

Except they won't, will they? Some parents will send their children overseas, some will employ private tutors. Some children will end up in the really shit "failing" school because house prices by the "outstanding" one have skyrocketed.

Start by fixing the inequality on the state education system. That will have far more positive effect than any grandstanding about abolishing private schools.

Normanpriceeh · 23/09/2019 14:52

The left are massive fucking hypocrites when it comes to the education of their little darlings.

And I am a leftie.

ChickenyChick · 23/09/2019 14:53

Who cares what they would do.

The Dutch king and queen send their kids to state school

Time Britain and the RF modernised a bit!

Maskin · 23/09/2019 14:54

No one ever considers what is ‘fair’ for those who are very bright. They deserve an education tailored to their needs just as much as those with SEN. Of course it would be ridiculous to ban private schools.

Normanpriceeh · 23/09/2019 14:55

Maskin

You are illustrating the problem. Do you really think that there are no bright children at state schools? Or do the bright children from poor families not count?

If you ask me private schools are pretty excellent at polishing turds, look at our dear prime minister.

TheresWaldo · 23/09/2019 14:59

The Dutch and Belgian royal families send their kids to state schools!

Bellabananarama · 23/09/2019 14:59

why should the top jobs go to those who went to the most expensive private schools.

Sometimes because some of those schools are highly academically selective in the first place

Sometimes because nepotism, which will continue

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 14:59

It wont level the playing field.

Are they banning tutors, out of school sports clubs, hobbies etc?

Tilltheendoftheline · 23/09/2019 15:00

Oh and what about the kids who benefit from having better educating parents?

Ita never going to be a level playing field.

Normanpriceeh · 23/09/2019 15:01

You are never going to have a completely level playing field, but it will level the playing field to a greater extent than the current system does.

Novocastrian · 23/09/2019 15:01

FFS. This is not Labour policy and not a Corbyn idea.
